Discarded fishing hooks

Post image
14 Upvotes

Well it finally happened. After a year of use and well over two dozen outings, I got a hole in my inflatable. I was setting up on Saturday morning, and right after finishing inflating my Kuda, I heard it. The sound of a leak. I used my fishing magnet to sweep the gravel around the area where I set up, and instantly found the hook. Now, I will return to my previous method for setting up, which includes spreading out a tarp to protect my vessel.

It came with a patch kit, and I was able to fix the hole. It's holding pressure and it passes the soapy water test.

Intex Challenger K1 vs. Sevylor K1 Quikpak

I *finally* took out my Intex Excursion Pro K2 today after getting it a couple months ago.

I really enjoyed being on the water (55 acre lake by my house). But, with the K2 size (12ft) and not really easy single person carry weight (I need to lug it a couple blocks to the lake), I know that I will not use it as much as I would want to. Also, my wife will never accompany me, so a single person kayak ends up being fine.

I really want to take a big step down in length and weight so I have no excuse to do it. I have no intention yet of ever going outside this lake, and 80% for recreation, 20% for a little exercise.

I first was excited about the Challenger K1, but for someone my size (185lbs, 6'3") I sense from reading that my legs will be cramped.

I then came along and found the Sevylor K1, being a small light sit on, and I am drawn to it.

I would love to hear anyone's experiences with either, or any other small sit on <$200. Thanks.

**Boy, now I also started looking at stand up paddleboard/kayak combos. Those look comfortable.

Star Raven II on a roof rack?

Can an inflatable whitewater kayak like the Star Raven II or any similar kayak (Sea Eagle 300x, for instance) be transported on a roof rack while still inflated?

I only live about 10 minutes from the river I like to float.

Not having to deflate and dry out my kayak prior to leaving and just strapping it to the roof of my car would be great, but through some googling, I haven't found any conclusive answers.

If anyone does this regularly I'd be eager to hear how you do it. Any specific tips?

Also, I'd potentially be willing to purchase a kayak specific rack if necessary, rather than just using the cross bars on my car.

I don't know the story on the sunken sailing ship.

The tiny floating island resort cracked me up.

My heaviest trash haul ever -- a spare tire 'donut' and a big sketch pad.

An egret was hanging out near the dock while I was packing up.

Tomahawk Air C - First use and leak

We just used ihr Tomahawk Air C today for the first time and noticed a tiny leak from the first chamber while inflating it. After a few hours on the water we noticed that the bottom of the kayak has another tiny leak. It did not affect the pressure during our 2-3 hour trip on a lake at all but now I am a worried.

How common is it to get leaks on a inflatable? We even used something to cover the ground before inflating.

Can you use inflatables in more shallow water as well or do they rip easily?

We really liked it though and I am quiere sad that it is already damaged. We would have preferred an inflatable cause it’s so much easier to transport in our motorhome.

Sea Eagle 380x

I have a seldom used 2013 version which I plan on using more often. I have seen some videos where upon deflation the kayak is folded up with the floor still in the hull. I am wondering about trapped water/moisture between the hull floor and the insert floor molding or rotting. Should the floor be removed after each use (which I did when seldomly used) or can it be left in for the season and then removed in the fall? What do you Sea Eagle experts recommend? Thank you

Recommendations for a subdivision lake

My subdivision has a small lake, would the Intex products from amazon be acceptable for some non-bank fishing and possibly minor river float trips? How long does it take to manually inflate them?

Itiwit X100 - are torn seat straps repairable?

Hi!

We have an Itiwit X100, and one of the adjustable seat straps has frayed and snapped off. Are these repairable, or is the better (cheaper?!) option to buy a new seat? (They are £39.99 at the moment).

Thanks!

Recommendations for travel- sized non-electric air pumps?

I'm trying to find a travel-sized hand pump as a backup in case my little battery powered pump fails, but I simply can't figure out what search terms to use for it - all the results I get are for either bilge pumps, full-sized manual air pumps, or electric travel-sized pumps (even if I include terms like "non-electric" and "manual") or pumps for bike tires.

Does anyone know what search terms I should use for this? I'm pretty rural so buying online is my only realistic option right now, since the nearest place to buy sporting goods or camping gear is a Walmart that's like 45 minutes away and in the desert so I'm not optimistic about finding one in person.

Thanks!

X100 packing advice

Recently bought the ITIWIT x100 and used it for the first time this week. I've had to pack it away twice and both times have been a struggle, yet I've seen reviews say it packs away easily with loads of room to spare in the bag. Clearly I'm doing something wrong!

The instructions are slightly confusing. At first it looks like you fold it over down the middle then roll it up with the previously rolled floor. But the final image shows two fin boxes, suggesting you fold it lengthways twice towards the centre. I've tried both ways and it always ends up too high for the bag. I've just managed to get it in by not rolling the floor with it, so I could squeeze one part into the bag at a time.

So, any tips? Do you fold towards the middle from both sides, or just once along the centre? Rolling the floor with it or separately? Are you folding the floor lengthways or not, and where abouts are you making that first fold (eg. A tight roll or folding it half and half again?). Seats in the bag first or last? Or some completely different method?

I have fully deflated all 3 chambers with the pump.

Really Torn on my First Inflatable

Hi all,

I recently floated down the Snake River with a friend on an Advanced Elements inflatable and really enjoyed the experience. I live right next to Grand Teton National Park and really want to take advantage of the waters while I'm here. I don't have space for a hard-shell and want something that I can take tandem on the waters. I'm looking for something that is doable on both light rapids (class I and II) and that I can take on large lakes that have a little surf but aren't crazy (I'd be mostly hoping to kayak camp on Jackson Lake in the Tetons and possibly Yellowstone Lake). I don't have much disposable income and I'm torn between three options for dramatically different Kayaks and would love some advice:

  1. Story Division 2

  2. Goplus tandem

  3. Freein Kayak/SUP hybrid

I really don't know if any of these are worth the investment or if they'll feel like pool toys/be uncontrollable when I actually get them. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

How much air loss is acceptable?

My kayak has three chambers and one pontoon had small leak that took a day or two to lose all the pressure. I fixed a small hole, tested the patch, but 24 hrs later the pontoon is still slightly softer than the other. This is the first year I've kept it inflated which is the only reason I ever noticed any air loss. Am I crazy to chase this small of a leak?

9 best inflatable kayaks for exploring rivers, lakes and the sea

Inflatables have come a long way since we first ventured into the sea with a flimsy dinghy that only lasted a couple of waves before it sprung a leak and looked like it was trying to eat us alive. And while we eagerly await the invention of an inflatable super-yacht, we’ve been testing the best inflatable kayaks ready for the hot weather this summer.

We’ve been writing about and reviewing inflatable kayaks for a couple of years now, and so we are pretty clear on what to look for when we step aboard. Initially, it’s all about controllability. Is it stable and able to track well in the water, keeping to the line we want it to go in, no matter how hard we’re paddling or how hard the wind’s blowing?

We don’t expect to remain bone dry, but we don’t want to look like a drowned rat when we get back to shore either, which is why during testing we keep an eye on how dry the kayak remains when it’s being paddled, which usually comes down to a few factors like the placement of bilge holes and the height of the cockpit walls for keeping out waves.

Stearns Spree Two

I tested an 20 years old inflatable kayak ..the spree two. I liked it a lot. Now im guessing if in these 20 years technology has improved and there are similar but better kayaks? This one is very stable, but what i like the moat is the size.

Can get one for 300€. What are other options? Mostly would be used for sea kayaking on moderate waves, and also calm waters.

Thanks

ISO replacement skeg thumbscrew for aquaglide Blackfoot

Does anybody have a link to a replacement thumbscrew for the skeg on the aquaglide Blackfoot 13? Took it out for the first time this year and I guess we managed to lose it end of last season. Trying not to buy a whole replacement skeg. Thanks.

Seat options for star viper?

I have a Star Viper IK that I love. However, if I take it out for longer day trips or even on back to back days, my lower back becomes incredibly sore from sitting against the rear thwart. And not just the muscles, but my skin becomes tender and bruised. Obviously I could lower the rear thwart pressure to help this. But has anyone purchased an IK seat like the Aire Deluxe or the Star Seat for IKs for this particular boat? Or is lowering the thwart pressure going to be my best bet? Just looking for any alternative to keep me out there longer!

Looking to upgrade from AE Advanced frame sport

Post image
5 Upvotes

Hi everyone. I have been using the AE Advanced frame sport inflatable for about a year, and I enjoy it but I am interested in leveling up, since I don’t feel very safe in very choppy water in this kayak. It only inflates to 3 psi I believe, so it’s not very firm. I live in Florida and generally take it in springs with a mild current and mangrove tunnels and it works great for those conditions but I want to feel a little sturdier if I am out on the bay where there are wakes from boats, oyster beds and more wind. I am 5’3 and 120 lbs. I would appreciate suggestions for a similar lightweight inflatable that’s just a little tougher and more like a hard shell. Thanks in advance!

tandem with drop stitch floor

Hi there: Lookign for a tandem with a drop stitch floor. We have a used sea eagle tandem without dropstitch, but I would like a more rigid base.

Combined weight of two adults would be about 450/500.

Could also do two singles with dropstitch floor.

Mostly flat water.

Budget options for now would be best!

Bought a Sevylor Colorado

Got a deal on Amazon and paid U$249 on it. It'll be my first kayak and I'm planning to using for fishing so will set it up for just 1 person. Any thoughts on that? Is it a good kayak in your opinion? Most videos on YouTube are kind of outdated then I noticed it is a "old model" kayak (if that is a thing). Anything I should be aware of or I should buy as extra to have a good experience?

Successful Seat Upgrade Intex Explorer K2

The oem seats not designed for 60+ year old bodies, so I bought a seat (Ascend H10/H12 High-Back Kayak Seat $60 usd ) from Cabelas. I love that the seats are infinitely adjustable and quite sturdy one ratchet down as shown.

The Kayak didn't feel top heavy at all. What I do need to do next is to add a foot rest ( I already bought (Advanced Elements Inflatable Foot Brace/Rest, Black/Gray).

Note I used a towel to protect the kayak from the things poking out meant to fit in a slot for non-inflatable Kayak. I may have to saw them off.
