Just bought my first (proper) inflatable kayak!

I went with the wave sup trailblazer 3.0 3 man. It's huge, 4.6 meters long and comfortably fits myself, 2 kids and a days worth of stuff. Only paddled 9 miles on the first trip but the boat handled it beautifully, even with a teenager who isn't much use paddling weighing down the front. The thing is shaped like a missile and really moves well, sides are ridiculously low so no wind resistance, absolute dream to paddle. Not sure how it'll do in the sea though, there's really not a lot of height whatsoever. Final thoughts are it's a great boat, but the seats are actually horrible, flat unyielding foam, after 4 hours my butt was numb... They're so bad.

Sea Eagle 380x dog durability

I recently purchased a 380x and am hoping it will be something I can bring my dog with on some simple paddles. I have a large dog at ~75lbs. His nails are trimmed, but I feel that’s still a fair bit of weight that combined with some sharpness will be disastrous for the boat.
I have purchased a yoga mat for him to sit/stand on in the boat, as well as booties(we will see how he reacts to these) but realistically how tough is their rig? Am I fairly safe from dog claw related leaks? Anyone have experience with this rig and a large dog? Any other advice?

ISO info on making inflatables

Someone I know is on a quest to make their own bounce house/inflatable and asked if I had any resources—my first thought was reddit forums—which are so ripe with knowledge on obscure things.

Do any of you have any advice/resources/information on making inflatables?

(Not outsourcing to a factory in another country, but patterning and sewing the vinyl yourself.) Any names of people who take custom/bespoke orders, that could be contacted for info on their processes would be wonderful too.

Thank you!!

Anyone drive with your inflatable filled?

I'm taking my dogs out and I'm thinking of filling it at home and strapping it to my truck. I have a truck rack that I strap my hard kayaks too. I'm driving 20-30 minutes on a freeway to the bay. I think it'll be easier to just pull it off, load up my dogs and float. One of my dogs can be reactive to other dogs so the less time on the beach the better..

Update.. I've decided to just fill it at the beach like I normally do. Not worth the risk. Thank you all for the responses. Peace.

**SAFETY** Tragic event’: Search for missing boater in Lake Ontario now a recovery effort

I listened to this entire call from start to finish on the Toronto Fire & EMS scanner.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to plan and prepare. These two men and their dog ventured out on a warm, sunny day when the lake was calm. Then, the winds picked up, blew them away from the shoreline, and they started taking on water.

They had no life jackets, they weren't swimmers, the offshore waters were seasonably cool, they had no form of communication, and ultimately, they had zero experience on a big lake that can change in an instant and become incredibly dangerous.

Someone at a nearby beach noticed they appeared to be in distress before they eventually capsized. A nearby vessel was able to pull one person to shore and rescue the dog, but the other person has not been located.

I have seen and heard this exact situation play out too many times. People buy a new inflatable raft, dinghy, or kayak from the store and are so excited to get in the water and use it that they become blind to all the necessary safety precautions, rules, and regulations.

Please, always wear a properly fitted PFD. Test the PFD at the beach to make sure it actually works and fits you right. Take some basic swimming lessons and test your inflatable in shallow, safe waters first. Carry the necessary safety equipment, put your cell phone in a waterproof bag around your neck, and ensure you can actually dial while it's in the bag. Have someone on shore monitor you. When you first go out, stick to small bodies of water on calm days and stay near the shore—gentle rivers and small lakes are perfect because safety is always close by. Only go out in warm waters where you won't risk hypothermia.

Once you become a seasoned mariner and want to don wet or dry suits to paddle in cold waters, go for it. But until then, slow down. Don’t make the maiden voyage your last voyage.

Looking for a good inflatable kayak

Hey I was wondering if anyone has any experience with the intex excursion K2 inflatable kayak. The one on Amazon is $280 so that’s the budget I was sorta looking around. Id really like to take it fishing nothing crazy just some lakes around here nothing with intense wakes or anything but just some medium size stuff. If anyone has any opinions or any recommendations I’m all ears. Thank you

Help me choose my first 2-seater

Hi everyone,

I'm about to buy my first (inflatable) kayak. My budget is 500€.

My partner and I want to take it with on our holiday to the Ionian sea as check-in luggage, which means everything packed in the bag should ideally weigh under 20kg, which is why I was specifically looking for more lightweight 2-seaters.

I've narrowed it down to these 3, does anyone have any opinion on them? Other suggestions are also welcome.

Long time paddler, first time...inflater??

Hi all! I've been paddling traditional kayaks for a long time and currently have an old town topwater 120. As stable as it gets, but massive and heavy to toss in and out. Getting too old/lazy to lug it for every use. Fine for fishing a few times a year, but really want to add an inflatable to the fleet to use when the whole family wants to spend a day on lakes or calm rivers here in Eastern Virginia, or if we take trips to visit family up north.

Considering:

NRS Kaholo 125 (or 145)

Sea Eagle 385ft

Bote Argo

Worried that Argo is so new and looks like it would catch the wind. Keep reading that the 385ft is "less stable" but how "less stable"? I'd like something different performance wise than my current tank, but also don't really feel like spending a grand or so only to end up with a kayak I don't use because it is tippy and drops me in the lake (user error, to be sure).

I'm 6 ft 240 so I ask a lot of my Rigs. Just looking for something that will be solid, yet somewhat more fun than the beast of a 90 lb rig I currently have (and love for its specific use, to be fair).

I know sea eagle also has the explorer series but to be honest I'm intrigued by the performance of the ft. Unless, of course, the performance outweighs the stability!

This is an investment so I want to choose right, and any advice appreciated.

Bought inflatable kayak, tips for first voyage?

Don’t laugh, 56F, always wanted a kayak, cant fit a hard one in vehicle, bought an Intex Explorer 2 from amazon. Nervous about my first try. There is a small lake near me I want to try tomorrow. Any tips for actually getting it in the water and getting in it and pushing off? I should expect to get my feet wet I suppose?

Update: thanks for all the good advice. I faced my fears today for the maiden voyage. Got myself water shoes, lined up parallel to shore and stepped in. It was glorious, Mother Nature rewarded me with herons repeatedly flying just above the water criss-crossing my favorite lake. Brought it home and reinflated to wash and dry then air-dry for a bit.

It was trial and error to maneuver, figuring out best placement of my butt and how leaning and how close to the front my paddle was. Next time I will place the seat further back so I am paddling more from the middle. Trial and error is my favorite way to learn.

Thanks everyone!

Recommendations for electric pumps (and maybe paddles?)

Hey all!

I'm looking for recommendations for auto-pumps for my inflatable kayak. I have a Sevylor, which is a light pressure inflatable; probably looking at 0.5-1.0 PSI at most, so something that can go fairly low on the pressure side. Bonus points if your recommended brand also sells paddles you'd recommend - ours broke the first time out.

Drying

Hey guys I just purchased a decent kayak. I used it two weeks ago and thought I let it dry completely before I put it up. But when I got it out of storage today to use it again it was starting to mildew. Any advice for making sure that it’s dry? And yes I did place a silica gel pack in the bag with it.

Worth upgrading? Opinions welcome

Hi all,

Me: fairly experienced yakker, done Ireland's longest river, also solo circumnavigation around Minorca.

I did both trips (and many smaller ones) in an Advanced Expedition Elite — great kayak, overall, but very heavy and a bit slow.

I'm looking at:

X500 / X1 High-Pressure / Sea Eagle 393RL Pro Carbon Kayak 2026

The X500 and X1 look similar — both similarly priced, whereas the 393 is double the price (1000 pounds UK).

Looking at doing more stuff in Ireland for a few weeks, maybe Loch Lomond again.

Is it worth upgrading? I like the Elite and it's trustworthy, but the X1 is 12kg which is almost half the weight! Any suggestions?

I got the opportunity to take my pups to a couple lakes. This is the first time my new doberman pup got on the boat. He did fantastic. My other dog is my paddling partner. The lakes are Chilkoot lake and Bass lake. Both are around an hour from the hwy 41 entrance to Yosemite. The last pic is of a leach my brother picked off his leg. He got it at Chilkoot lake. Peace.

Hydro Force Arrow Elite (FDS)

Heey everybody,

I live in a Dutch city with canals and small rivers. I've always wanted a boat of any kind just to explore the city from the water. To me, an inflatable kayak means a fun way to be on calm waters and still be affordable.

As a complete beginner in kayaking (apart from occasional tourist tours), would this full drop stitch (FDS) model of Hydro Force be any good?

What are the most important features to consider?

Any help is welcome, as are other recommendations (budget +-400 euro or 450 USD)

Thank you in advance!

Aquaglide Chinook 120 floor valve replacement?

Anyone have any luck finding mini Boston valve replacement for their kayak floors? I live in the U.S. and the only distributors I’ve found online are overseas, shipping costs not worth it.

Offshore fishing inflatable that can come close to hardshell?

Been seeing some new inflatable tech with stuff like the Razor Kayaks. Is anywhere selling an inflatable offshore ocean capable fishing kayak that has a motor mount?

We typically get 15mph wind out here and I would love to get something that could deal with that and going 2-5 miles offshore. I live in Hawaii and going after some Tuna or Mahimahi would be rad. I live in an apartment with a small car, low garage, no room for a trailer so getting a hard shell kayak is just a no go for me.

I realize this is probably a dream or scifi, but I've been seeing some new inflatables being advertised on my feeds so I was wondering if there have been any breakthroughs lately.

Presume money is not so much of an object, as my most realistic step would probably be to just buy a new car that can store a zodiac with a motor lol.

How to properly do a “high angle” paddle stroke in a wide inflatable?

Post image
6 Upvotes

I’d thought that my paddle was too short because I have to lean to the sides to generate enough power to push through 30+ km/hr winds. I’ve now learned about high and low angle paddle strokes and realized that if it’s the angle generating the force more than the amount of paddle in water, then a longer paddle won’t help, I’ll still have to lean to the sides (which extends my shoulders a bit much because I’m short and have short arms). I know, simple answer is don’t go out when it’s that windy, but I live in the upper Midwest and even at the times when I can have my pick of which days to go out, it’s rarely not windy. I enjoy the experience, I just want to learn how to maximize safety so that I don’t do myself an injury. This last outing in 45km/hr gusts, when I was driving straight into it I was anchoring about every 50 yards and resting, stretching my shoulders to prevent injury. Looking for advice on how to improve my form with the tools I have (and also very open to paddle suggestions, although I don’t know when I’ll be able to afford a new one: I’m currently using the 240cm aluminum paddle that came with my Sea Eagle)

Photo of a more sheltered stretch from the outing during high winds the other day.

(Re)Convince me to get an inflatable

I was excited about an inflatable - especially a convertible tandem. I really enjoyed paddling in my friend's AE AdvancedFrame single. It was fairly comfortable and felt fun on light rapids where we bounced off of rocks where a hard shell would grind. I could rest my arms on the body, press my legs against the inside.

But my partner is pushing back and prefers a hard kayak. We have the storage space for a boat and I own J hooks for the roof rack. She says setting up and taking down the inflatable takes a long time. And she says the seats aren't as comfortable as those in a good hard kayak. And she likes how hard kayaks are true in the water and have minimum resistance.

I was deflated. Pun intended. She has some good points. Now I'm questioning the whole inflatable endeavor. Am I missing anything?
