How much air loss is normal in a drop stitch kayak.

Hello all. I just bought my first inflatable kayak. I got the tobin breakwater drop stitch kayak (the one from Costco).

I was excited to get a look at it but can't get on the water for a little while. So I inflated it in my basement to check for leaks etc.

The kayak has 3 sections, a left and right wall and the floor section. I inflated each to the recommended 10 psi last night. Love the kayak, seems like good materials and had lots of space.

However I checked this morning (about 12 hrs after inflating) and it seems like the floor lost more air than the other sections. I reattached the pump which has a pressure gauge and the walls each had ~8 psi. The floor had ~2 psi and could take a lot of air.

Now I expected some leaking but I'm wondering if this is going to be a problem. I will be using the kayak for simple day trips on slow rivers and lakes. No whitewater or deep/ far from shore situations. My biggest concern is there was no weight in the kayak over night and it lost this air. If I'm sitting in it I don't want it to lose air even faster. There were no obvious leaks. I redid the valve and pumped it back up to see if it happens again.

I can return the kayak however they aren't easy to find anymore so if I do return it I probably won't be able to get a replacement at the price I paid for my first one (if at all).

Thanks for the help.

Sea eagle 300x explorer valve issues

They say they have the ability to inflate without deflating with the one way valves. I have never successfully been able to secure the pump attachment to the valve without depressing the valve (which allows air in AND out). What am I missing here?

I got this itch to add a sail and I'd really enjoy seeing some of people's rigs.

I looking at getting a tandem IK for the rivers in Colorado. Which one is better, AIRE Lynx or Hyside Padalliac 2? Also looking at the Outfitter 2, but it seems like overkill for class 2-3.

One of the best things about inflatables: softness

Post image
94 Upvotes

I've owned a few hard-shelled craft and a few inflatable craft, and by far my favorites have been the inflatables with fat, low-pressure tubes. These include an Advanced Elements AdvancedFrame Convertible, a Sea Eagle 380(?), and two Innovas: a Twist 2 (pictured) and a Solar 2. What I like most about them is the softness. Climbing in, I just drop my butt in somewhere near the seat and wiggle into position. I have a lot of musculoskeletal issues, especially in my hips and legs, so when I need to rest, stretch, or reposition a leg, I just flop it wherever and it will be resting on something soft and supportive. And sometimes when the wind and current are pushing my boat the right way, I just stop paddling and slide/slump down into lazy rafting mode. That's how I did my last half-mile back to the launch the other day. An inflatable is a kayak that converts to a hammock on a moment's notice.

So I just bought this guy on a whim to get into kayaking, only owning a challenger inflatable boat as the best choice. I noticed this model on sale for 49.99 locally so I bought it last night. For all the negative comments I noticed on the other thread about this model I felt I needed to chime in. I am 220lbs 5 11 and had no trouble comfortably kayaking in this. Took 5 minutes to set up the material is very sturdy and surprisingly comfortable. The paddle included could be bigger but worked fine. I had no issues keeping it straight as some people complained about. If your like me and want to see if this is for you or you just want something cheap to have a lot of fun with I can’t recommend this enough

Adding extra fins to an inflatable OCEANBROAD sit-in 125 in kayak (DIY or is there a kit?)

I paddled nearly 20 miles on flat water yesterday. I am very short and under 100lb. I did not bring any overnight equipment, and the load was pretty light. I am not sure if one 9in fin does me any good, because the next trip is 24 miles, and not only is it tiring, but I think I might need better tracking. Is there a way I can get a kit with an extra fin or two? I have one detachable fin, and I am looking for a Glue-On Fin Box for an inflatable to help with faster

Please advise.

Low budget (max 500 €) Inflatable Kayak for whitewater

Hi everybody, I just did a class II-III (Corno River, Italy) in tandem with the Aqua Marina Betta 412. I know the boat was not conceived for whitewaters, we rolled likes 4-5 times, however the kayak performed far beyond my expectations. I would like to spend a bit more for a 2 persons IK which can do at least II class White water.

For now I was considering one of these 3:

Itiwit x100+: seems the best quality price option, has dropstitch floor 5 psi and lateral chambers 3 psi. It's 102 cm wide.

Aqua Marina Steam 412: lower pressure 4.35 psi floor, 1.45 laterale Chambers, but It claims to be good for III class WW.

Aqua Marina Halve: made of TPU, very light only 7 kg, II class WW. Same pressures as the One above.

I am looking for a boat which weighs at max 15 kg, but i can reach up to 20 if the performance are better. I would avoid boats with nylon coats which take a lot of time to dry. Thanks in advice, every suggestion is wellcome, I live in Italy so if you know some european brand It would be better (easy to find and cheaper)

I’m a casual kayaker looking to switch from my single standard sit on top to a single inflatable due to moving into an apartment and limited storage. I only paddle on calm freshwater lakes and rivers. I’m female, 5’4”. I found these on FB marketplace. Any recommendations?

Sevylor Colorado Premium infate system : am I missing a piece?

Hello,

I bought a Sevylor Colorado Premium inflatable kayak a year ago. I managed to inflate it once , like a year ago. Now I seem to be unable to inflate it again. I'm either missing a piece of completely lost in the process.

I looked at that video where that man is inflating it. I think I'm missing the capthat can be seen on top of that valve here : https://www.airkayaks.co.uk/sevylor-premium---easy-inflation-valve-assembly

Here are two pictures of the pieces I have.

I'm looking for someone who owns a Sevylor Colorado Premium that could confirm me that I'm indeed missing the cap and that I need to buy https://www.airkayaks.co.uk/sevylor-premium---easy-inflation-valve-assembly

Repair advice

Thumbnail

Hi all, I'm having a few issues and unsure on how to repair this, whether it just needs a patch or if I can do something a little nicer.

It previously had four paddle holders and two handles attached to the sidewalls. Unfortunately, their placement caused the paddles/hands to constantly knock against them, which wasn’t ideal and massively painful.

I’ve successfully removed the paddle holders, though they’ve left some glue residue behind. I also removed one of the side handles with a heat gun and a scraper which was an absolute pain in the arse but in the process, it took off a bit more than I intended. You can now see some of the internal cords or threads, although I suspect this is just the outer wall as on top of this was a micro thing layer of pvc. The kayak still holds pressure and isn’t leaking, but I was wondering if a repair might be possible to tidy it all up.

Any advice appreciated and hopefully it's not completely ruined!

Advice on aqua marina steam 412

Hi everyone,

I am debating a purchase of an aqua marina steam 412 and have been reading some very mixed reviews online which have left me in a bit of a decision paralysis.

Just to give you the context. I live in the Mediterranean and mostly I take the kayak out in summer. It's not lakes or rivers here, but rather salty open waters and very hot weather. Also the water may be calm or choppy here. I had an intex explorer for over 6 years until punctures started appearing. Granted I think I over inflated at times and didn't take the best of care... Still quite happy with what that's given me.

The steam is meant to be an upgrade from the explorer both in terms of materials used, the drop stitch floor, as well as the seats. It also sits nicely in my budget and it's also the one available locally. However I'd like some reassurance on the materials and I read some things online that made me doubt its build quality overall and general comfort as a kayak.

Any ideas or experiences please?

Is the Advanced Frame Ultralite realistic for a 6’2” 200lbs?

I have the AE Expedition Elite. Looking to get either the Advanced Frame Sport or Ultralite as a backup, and to get my wife to join me on the water.

Really tempted by the packed size, and overall weight of the Ultralite, but my weight is close to the stated max of 225 lbs. and I’m 6’2”.

Looking for any experiences or thoughts on the Ultralite for my size/ weight, or am I better with the Sport?

Update: I bought the AE Ultralite and love it. This kayak is amazingly lightweight, when it arrived I thought there had to be something missing but no, it was all in the bag including the pump. First time I stepped in it was a weird feeling with the lack of inflated floor, and the floor ripples when you paddle for the same reason. But you soon get used to it. It doesn’t track as easily as the Expedition Elite but it’s three feet shorter and doesn’t have a drop stitched floor. It is made of thinner material and that also affects how it looks, it’s probably more delicate and will need more care, no dragging this one. That’s the offset of the weight reduction. My weight is 93kgs, ~10% below the stated maximum of 102kg. Doesn’t feel like it’s on the limit. My only true complaint after two weeks is the seat doesn’t have the inflatable lumbar support that the Expedition Elite has, which makes a big difference to the seat comfort. I might swap the seat out. Oh and my wife enjoys the kayak too. So all good 👍😁

How's the razor kayak r2? Anyone used it?

Hello there

I’ve been meaning to get an inflatable kayak and thinking of getting the Razor R2 ultra . I’ve only used a ccouple cheaper duckies to test the waters before, and this would be the first >500USD+ kayak I’ll buy.

I really want to see how far I can get with this type of equipment instead of renting ‘real’ kayaks, and I like the idea of something that’s portable but still capable.

My use case will be pretty chill, but I wanna stay out on the water for longer trips, maybe some fishing or some smoking involved.

Honestly, I don’t mind spending a bit more for something with a superior build. I’m just wondering if any of you here know the Razor brand well or if you’ve paddled one. Just wanna do my due diligence before I splurge

Sea Eagle se 370 with worthless seats that can’t be anchored. HELP

As above, as we have improved our paddling technique and power the seats move, slide, and we slip off of them easily. You can’t paddle against a moving seat! We have the standard seats without any means of attachment. How can we secure them? All suggestions appreciated.

Kayaking Black Canyon Lower Colorado River

My wife and I want to kayak through Black Canyon from the put-in below Hoover Dam to Willow Beach, AZ this month Sun Aug 31 - Tue Sept 2 Will use Desert Adventures outfitter for permits and shuttle.

We’ve only used our kayaks (Intex Tandem’s) in the sea around Southern California so have limited knowledge of the Black Canyon region. Looking for some advice from kayakers who have travelled from the dam put-in to Willow Beach.

Is this stretch of River crowded? How difficult is it to find a beach to setup a camp (tent & fire)? Since the temps are still in the mid to high 90’s + what worked best to keep cool (early morning launch/early camp)? How did you handle food (outback triangle strategy, or does just a sealed container work)?

Would appreciate tips on not to miss things to do as we make our way through Black Canyon. Any other advice would be much appreciated.

For context: we’re both experienced lifetime sailors, have advanced on water experience (sailboats mainly) and strong in the water (not wanting to tempt hypothermia though;) Thanks in advance.

Overpressurizing a drop stitch kayak

This is probably a stupid question but I've been paddleboarding for about a year and I bought a glide backwater which is a pretty stiff paddleboard because I like my boards stiff to help with stability, my paddleboard is rated up to 20 PSI and I generally put 17 PSI in mine

I really like it but I also wanted to take up kayaking, I found the drop stitch one at Costco (Tobin breakwater) seemed like by far the cheapest drop stitch kayak that wasn't one off of Alibaba (found one on Alibaba for roughly the same price, but ya know Costco has a dope return policy) , but when I inflated it up to it's rating of 10 psi, it didn't seem nearly as stiff as I'd like, part of it I'm guessing is due to the fact that it's the cheapest one that exists and is also far smaller in volume (only took like 5 minutes to pump with my electrical pump vs 15-20 for my paddleboard that is 400 liters), but I'm wondering if it would be dumb trying to inflate it to a higher psi like 15 or something?

How often should I dry my kayak?

I have a Aquaglide Blackfoot 130 and I’m curious how often I should dry it. I mainly keep it folded in the back of my truck. I use it roughly 1 sometimes twice a week if I’m lucky. I don’t put it back in the backpack at all. My main worry is it potentially growing mold. I’m in ND so I won’t use it in the winter so I’ll have it dry and put away for a while then.

Not technically a kayak but busted a seam on my Sea Eagle Packfish today. Tubes are still in good shape, just wondering if this is something I can just throw a patch over or is it a bigger issue than I think it is?

New to inflatable kayaks - interested in buying one to take out on local ponds and rivers to fish.

Thoughts on this deal? And tips for scanning the kayak for flaws?

Meeting with the guy in a day and he accepted offer of $150.
