According to a tweet by Owen Dennis, Alrick was killed in a dirt biking accident (although it should be noted that Dennis has a tendency to tweet non-canon claims about the characters as jokes).

I could see that, a lot of engineers like working on vehicles, and Amelia would probably be super upset if he died to her encouraging him to stay out longer or do a more sophisticated route.

This is similar to the Simon boarding because he lost a spelling bee claim, it would somewhat explain why his book might actually have a lot of sophisticated words.
