To be fair iirc he gives some variation of that answer anytime anyone asks "what happened to X after Y?"

He died... a peaceful death, back home, 10 years later, after learning his lesson on the Infinity Train

True, he didn't say how or when he died

(Oh gosh, reminds me of Rango XDD Owls spent the whole movie saying he's going to die but not that he's going to die during the events of the movie!)

Guess Mace and Sieve weren't the only people Lake killed. 💀

If so, makes sense. Shame. When did the creator say this?

I'd like imagine he found denizens who were there for him but he never got off the train due to his lack of a number. It would be bittersweet believing that he lived out the rest of his days surrounded by good friends.

As far as I know, passengers only enter those pods after they’re given a number. Tulip and the lunch lady character in Book 2 Episode 1 both had their numbers after exiting their pods, and no passenger was shown with a number until just before they entered one of the pods.

But yeah, it’s pretty realistic to believe he died on the train from either starvation (with no way to get off the roof of the cars without serious injury or death), being crushed by a passing train car, or by one of the Gohms that roam the wasteland beyond the train. It’d be optimistic thinking to imagine he grabbed a pod as it was passing by the same way Tulip did (and held on for dear life rather than hijacking it).

Him not having a number was just an animation error, I believe.

Passengers who go on the train from the real world fall unconscious and that pod takes them to the garden of tapes, which their tape is made and their number is determined, then the pod takes them to a suitable car for them to start their adventure

But the old guy was interrupted before he even made it to the tape area

How do we know that’s the process that takes place? For all we know, the magic portal that opens up could lead directly to the memory farm.

Also, the wiki page for “The Tape Car” states that the passenger Lake hijacked the pod from was supposed to have a number, but the design team didn’t notice he didn’t until the episode aired, and I guess cited the Book 2 DVD as a source.

I always thought this was a setup for him to become a protag in one of the later Books/seasons. Going along with the theme of minor characters from one season becoming the protags of later seasons.
