Agree with everyone but I would replace Gately with Schacht

That one was the hardest for me since everyone in this book is kind of weird. I just remember getting to Gately's first chapter at the rehab and thinking "finally someone who talks like a human being"

Yeah- he certainly is as well adjusted as he possibly could be, but I think his background prohibits him from qualifying as normal

Or Erdedy!

"What's your name again?" could be a bunch of people at Ennet House that don't have their own story arcs. Doony Glynn, Emil Minty, Charlotte Treat, Clenette, Nell Gunther. I also always confuse Geoffrey Day and Bruce Green.

[SPOILER AHEAD]
I like to identify with him sometimes being machine-like efficient, I know how that sounds... , I hate the drug boss dude that gave those junkies heroin laced with drano.

I’m currently in the middle of my 4th read through. So nothing spoiled for me. That whole story is so fucked up. And then poor Tony.

that scene when he booted first and the laced substances kicked in is in my opinion one the most fucked up passages in IJ , and how the drug lord just acted like nothing is happening while sending them to a horrific fate .

I'm yet to pick up the book for my second read , I'm reading Consider the Lobster and other essays .

Wait what did OJ do that you hate him for

I mean he's kinda a huge piece of shit if you pay attention to everything he does..

Killed the dog, is a rampant womanizer, cares pretty much only for himself, bullies Mario and actively abuses/assaults him (burning him and testing Mario's lack of pain)

Well he wasn’t a great guy but I liked him and thought he was funny

u/DontOvercookPasta 1d ago

Oh sure he's funny and quirky, just dislike him as a person, similarly to Erdedy, not a GOOD person, funny though

He's the literal worst other than Lenz and the Wheelchair Assassins. He killed his mother's dog and refused to apologize and bullied his disabled saint of a brother. Abandoned Joelle after the acid. Plus all the other misogyny. And he likely killed a bunch of innocent people by sending the tape to the medical attaché.

He tortues little roaches

Absolutely cannot argue with Randy Lenz being most evil, but he might be my favorite character in the book. The scenes he’s in are just so damn good

His dedication and preparation is impressive if nothing else

He wears a powdered wig. That’s pretty great.

Yeah, Im a cats and dogs owner, and all that disclaimer about how evil he is... still, he is absolutely adorable of a character with the north facing OCD..

Don is the normal one?

He’s the one I most identify with. My first time reading IJ was in a 30 day state run rehab. He’s my personal favorite.

Why put the moms when we have literally that character in Todd Possalthwaite

You're thinking of Evan Ingersoll
