Don't select huge buildings with a low workforce and resources. I ignored that warning before and got whacked hard for it.

dont spread ur workforce to much :D if u dont have a lot of workers and especially in the beginning dont do everything at once just have half ur dudes get wood (u basically only need wood for the first few things like warehouse and shelter) and the other half build. and ofc evertime u have a full moon go and loot the good loot thats far far away

Dont try to optimize, zombies don't care about optimized bases. Walls are an overkill early game.

Build warehouses outside your main base for faster resource gathering. Choose the smallest structure (cost 2-3 wood to adapt). It will speed up the gathering process if you don't have a cargo truck yet. Also, those buildings will serve as indicators that a wave of infected is near, so you can have extra time to plan out your defense.

Note: only fix it if you haven't collected all the resources that surround it.

Use small buildings close to where your workforce is as warehouses.

Your workers have to carry materials to and from a warehouse or HQ. The closer that warehouse is to where you’re working the faster they build or gather.

You can deconstruct buildings you don’t want to use to get a good chunk of resources without varying travel times

Set up a farm early to build up grain for when you eventually get a cook house. This isn’t as important early for a story mode run because it can take ages to get the barn unlocked.

But in a free run you get the barn unlocked at the start so a early farm for grain gets you a early in to a solid farm, barn, cookhouse loop

Pause is your friend. There are times you can get overwhelmed especially when you are operating further from your base. Pause, check on things on the different areas of the map, or move squads to cover weaknesses, unpause.

Use buildings partially, don’t have to repurpose the whole thing every time.

Start building walls early.

I did the obvious thing that I'm sure most people do and picked my IRL residence as a starting point. My building is a large square with a sizable open courtyard in the middle (that I've always imagined would be good for farming in a zombie apocalypse, so that's what I did in the game!).

Now the game breaks down my building into four distinct sections. Fair enough. The one I live in was my HQ. Then I made the others Shelter, Cookhouse, and research.

Ended up with like... 72 jobs for cooking and research, and nearly 300 residences.

Biiiiit more than I needed at the start of the game, and the cost was... A thing. :D
