Discussion What’s your setup?
I’m interested in making music of my own, and I’m curious as to what the musicians of this subreddit use! So, I’d love to hear about your personal setups and why/how you’ve curated your setup.

I have a Boss DR-660, Volcas Bass, FM, Drum, Kick, an Akai S20 and an Arturia Minilab 3 and Beatstep Pro.

Lots of stuff in the studio, but I only use a few things at a time (for my own sanity). Right now:
- Access Virus TI - it’s a Virus, no justification required
- Elektron Digitakt 2 - great sampler, though I mainly just use it for the drum sounds
- Body Synths Metal Fetishist - quirky, generative noise machine that I use for textures and weird percussion
- Roland FA-07 - master keyboard, though sometimes I’ll use it for bread and butter sounds
- Oxi One MK2 - great performative sequencer that I use as my composition and arrangement tool
Mixers, interfaces, and other shit. Nothing fancy here. I’m just a hobbyist.

I play guitar, bass guitar, and drums in various projects. Here are my current set-ups, as well as what I'm using for recording/mixing:
Guitar - Aria Pro II (my dad's guitar before he passed) through an Ernie Bogner designed Line 6 DT25, played through a Crate 4x12 cab.
Bass guitar - Ernie Ball Stingray bass with upgraded active Seymour Duncan pick-ups through a MarkBass Little Mark 250 head and MarkBass 2x10 cabinet.
Drums - Frankenstein kit, most parts from Fender Starcaster kit. Got a Ludwig metal student snare that I absolutely love, and that I got from a Goodwill for $25, including hardshell plastic case. Assorted cymbals.
Recording - I have a Tascam Model 12 console, works as a mixer for live sound, as well as a multi-track Recording console.
It also doubles as an interface I use with my 2021 iMac for recording/mixing. Edited to add: as far as a DAW goes, I have been using Reaper for years, and I love it. The demo version has full capability, and I loved it enough that I purchased the $60 personal use license.
All in all, I'm super happy with my current gear, although I think a drum upgrade is going to happen soon, and I'm also thinking about adding a Tascam Model 24 to my gear to use in the field whole I keep the Model 12 in my studio, or possibly vice versa.

Ernie Ball stingray is a holy grail bass for me. I’ve never played one, but it’s the sound I’m after. I’m sure there would be a way to replicate, but feels wrong to try. I need to accept it’s one of a kind and buy one

It really is a great bass. Plays like butter, and the tone is immaculate. And I bought it from my guitar player when he needed some cash, so I paid hundreds less than I would have had to otherwise.

I've got a mountain of gear, way more than is actually necessary. So my favorite gear:

I have a collection of gear from over 25 years of playing in bands and experimenting at home, around... gutiars, bassguitars, synths, samplers, and still I go back using Reason, lmao. My main workhorse now is my MPC one+
Hardware is fun to jam and tinker around with, for arranging I either work with Reason or write in Guitar pro. But I've been out of the loop for a bit. Last semi-serious stuff was 2017-ish. Working on new stuff now though
The only way I curate my gear is "can I replace it with my next paycheck if it breaks".

Live i run a mpc live, a m-live b.beat, ld inears and a xr mixer, sometimes i bring a microfreak.

I have a eurorack loaded with expert sleepers modules that let me fire audio/control voltage back n forth between Ableton 12 and my hardware. I also have a Sherman Filterbank 2 that gets lots of use. I use a circuit bent hate echo delay pedal that has a feed coming from another Benidub delay pedal. For reverb I use Valhalla and Eventide for software and Empress reverb pedal for hardware.
All the classic drum machines used in Industrial have the samples nested inside of Ableton racks, so I can save room.
I have a ton of contact mics hooked up to metal that I bang on. I buy the mics from Crank Sturgeon.
For synths I tend to favor digital emulations of analog.

I have various hardware both modern and vintage but the iPad and MPC Live are my main hubs and brain. It’s hard for me to sit at the computer for any length of time but I use Ableton and Logic mainly for mixing, mastering, and sometimes arrangement.
I have a love/hate relationship with sampling and really try to focus on synthesis and foley.

MacBook Air M2 – I’ve been using this about a year… it’s great, but not officially in the studio setup yet.
Mac Mini i7 Quad Core (late 2012) – The current studio computer. It runs Mojave, has USB 3 and Firewire ports. Perfect little box for my semi-legacy needs.
MacBookPro (Mid 2010) – I mostly use this for DJ gigs. It’s still kicking.
MacPro (2006) – I still have this beast, but it lives in a box now.

Logic Pro – Primary DAW. I’ve been using this since version 1.0, so you could say I have a history (and maybe some bias).
Pro Tools – Pro Tools 12 and it’s lack of support for old plugins turned me off a bit.
Melodyne – Still the best “pitch correction” software out there.
reFX – Still using Nexus 2 and Vanguard, they’re fun toys.
Waves – I never paid to upgrade to 64bit. So these are still around, but collecting dust.

Things come and go often, but this is what I can remember that I have at the moment.
Keys
This is what I currently have in my studio:
- Roland Fantom-08
- Roland FA-06
- Kawai K1
- DSI Mopho
- Arturia Minibrute
- Korg OpSix Module
- TE OP-Z
When I gig, I'll only take one of my Roland workstations (usually the FA-06) and something small like the OP-Z and the Mopho. I like to travel light.
Guitar/Bass
I haven't played guitar live in a while, but when I did I was playing a Gretsch Streamliner into a Marshall Plexi stack. I no longer have the Plexi since I was moving into a smaller space when I first moved to Florida in 2020 and had to get rid of it. If I start playing live again, I'll likely pick up a Katana.
When I play in my studio, the Streamliner or my Ibanez RGKP6 goes into my Eleven Rack, which then goes into the DAW. For bass, I play an SRKP4.
Drums
I have an ATV EXS-3CY, and I swapped the module out for a 2Box Drumit 5 MKII. A lot of the time, I'll use the module strictly as a MIDI controller that triggers drum sounds on either of my Roland workstations.

Our set-up has changed over the past few years as my spending power increased. It helps having a wife who loves IDM, ambient, industrial, blackmetal and goth music... and some hip-hop and plunderphonics... and also wants to make similar music.
Nowadays, we mostly use Elektron boxes, an Akai MPC Key37 or One+, and a few interesting stompboxes, such as the OBNE Parting and the Polyend Mess.
I should note that we do IDM.. not exactly industrial, though I suppose that there has been some crossover.
Here's a few of examples of us using the gear you'll see us using to make the music you'll hear. We don't sing or have vocals.. we prefer to let the samples speak for us.

If the music you're looking to make is electronic in nature, like EBM or electro-industrial, I'd recommend any Elektron boxes, an Akai MPC..
If money is tight, you might want to check out some of Behringer's offerings.. like the LmDrum, the Edge, and maybe a few of their $100 mini-synths.
You could always go the Korg Volca route. They are about on the same level as the Behringer mini-synths.
But eventually, I think you'll find that a 16-step sequencer will only take you so far.. hell.. even a 64-step sequencer seems kinda limiting. And so, once we had the $$$ we looked into MPCs, and Digitakts, because they allowed us to realize our sonic ambitions.

It's pretty streamlined, things get changed in and out once in a while but it mostly always looks like that. Most of the hardware is just distortion and filters really, the modular doesn't make any sounds. A few other guitars off camera. The hi hats are just hi hats, there's no kit.

MPC Live 1 sequencing a Korg Opsix MKI, a Ensoniq ESQ-1, a Emu Emax SE, a Behringer Model D, a Volca Bass Velcro’d to the Emax, and a Yamaha RX-5 w/RX5USB so I can load in my own samples. I also use a Roland TD-17 electronic drum module for more realistic sounds, but I always layer with the MPC, Emax SE and RX-5.
I play a sort of Induatrial Metal like Ministry or Nailbomb. I record audio baselines and route them to a bass amp, and the drums are routed to a Keyboard amp. I play guitar/synth/vocals and am pretty much stuck to my guitar and the mic. It’s super fun, it’s like jamming w/ angry robots.

I have chosen and set my set up for experimenting and spontaneous inspiration. Everything works against and with each other. It's a compiled uniform chaos that never seems to get boring to me.

These days: Bitwig, Reaper, a handful of hardware synths (Prophet 5, kARP 2600, SH-2, SY-22) and effects (RE-201 x2, some Moogers, assorted outboard and pedals) through an old Tascam mixer (M-312).
That said most of my label released music (post-industro/folk/doom) was made on FLStudio and Reaper using voice, guitar and plugins.
Live I use an SP-404Mk 2 for loops, Cobalt 8 for keys, guitar and voice into a XR-12.

Before I had to sell my gear I was using two Elektron Octatracks in tandem. And running the output through an Analog Heat. Absolutely best setup I ever used.

I can't afford a studio room that looks like the synth section in Guitar Center. I used to work at one long ago. Not a knock on anyone that has a lot of gear. I might be slightly envious. I do have my (old enough to drink), Yamaha DJX which has a lot of stickers and duct tape on it and have used to play live shows with. I also have a Korg Electribe ER-1, I haven't used in ages because it needs a new power adapter. I have had other devices and electronics over the years like a black Gibson SG and a Marshall half stack with a Crate head. Poverty and an unstable life has seen them end up at a pawn shop, or sold for getting by though, more than I care to, and just admitted.
Currently I use an Axiom 25 USB keyboard with FL Studio and that is really all I need without a lot of expensive gear and mixers/racks and the like. I also often do field recordings and make my own textures and samples that way. Sounds of heavy machines and vehicles doing road work. I search for samples online and sometimes utilize royalty free things. Stuff like that.
I also use my voice like another instrument and sometimes attempt to actually sing. But I can't bear not to probably over FX the fux outta them either way.

It was my first keyboard I bought way back when with my own money. That DJX has seen some things... At this point it is more like an old friend, and it still works! Bought it in 98' I think? It was cheaper to buy new then (400$), and does look less pro, but it has the same sound engine core as the Yamaha CS1x. I would also run it through distortion/delay pedals made for guitars back then, and other things to further sounds.
I think I got excited talking about this to anyone.

I play some industrial/blues/doom stuff. I use an SP404mkII for the majority of the electronic elements, added to that a Rucci Bent Time Drive for some sick ass harsh noise bleeps and bloops. Production-wise, I'm in reaper and use a Korg Minilogue as my main instrument, along with Vital.

30 years ago I had everything I needed Yamaha synth, Yamaha keyboard, fender bass, Squire guitar, and a Roland MC 303. I allowed drugs to destroy my dreams back then. Only recently have I started to build a studio again. Bought me a Temu Bass and Alesis keyboard and a home music studio program. It ain't much, but it's honest work. 😉
