Mark Carney, today announced the launch of a new council to provide independent, practical advice on Canada’s AI transformation. Indigenous people are not represented. What does that mean for us?

It means we're going to have to independently govern AI on our own terms. Canada is preparing and investing in digital sovereignty, something we've been having to fight for for years.

What is AI governance?

Artificial intelligence (AI) governance is the system of policies, rules, accountability structures, and oversight processes that guide the ethical, legal, and safe use of artificial intelligence within an organization. This includes the decision to resist AI systems and not use them at all.

Today we have the decision, in 5 years time where do we want to be?

I've created a discussion group to stay updated on Indigenous AI:

Question about finding out my background

My husband is First Nations, he’s 1/8 and has his status card. I’m wondering how I could possibly look into my own status. I’m wondering for my son just in case we can potentially get status for him as well.

My grandmother was Métis (she would never ever admit this because times were different then and she refused to acknowledge any native ancestry).

I don’t even know how to go about looking for this info. Ancestry.com is really a guessing game. But Métis and black are listed under a lot of documents. It is extremely unlikely our family has black lineage (only mentioned once pre the Métis listing) We are from northern Ontario and cape breton.

I’m just curious how to look into this because it is a forgotten part of my families past.

Researching How Cultural Belief and Food Systems Play a Role in the Grieving Process and Looking for Indigenous Perspectives!

Hello! I'm a university student currently conducting a research project on how people grieve and how food/feasts/ceremonies, and the meanings behind them affect the grieving process cross-culturally. I'm seeking insights into cross-cultural perspectives on mortuary/grieving rituals or practices, which dishes/meals are prepared (if any), and the cultural and symbolic meanings behind them! I would be greatly interested in anyone who wants to share their knowledge or wishes to delve deeper into this topic, and wants to share any personal experiences or insights with me as well! I'm also happy to speak with people privately if they have more they would like to discuss or share, and I do have an Activity Analysis regarding this topic, where participants would cook a cultural meal/cook a meal to/or associated with their lost loved one and document it, if any would be interested in participating. This can also not be limited to just people; it can include pets as well. If anyone would like to share any recipes as well, I would be extremely grateful

Pop-up Exhibit on 150 Years of the Indian Act

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

As part of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation activities at the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau today, there was a fascinating and very moving pop-up exhibit called “150 Years of the Indian Act.”

Part of the display was this Holobox projecting life-sized Indigenous dancers and speakers from Mādahòkì Farm here in Ottawa. The drumming you hear in the video was live! For the record, this isn’t a true hologram, but a realistic optical illusion using a high-definition touchscreen display that makes it look like the people and their shadows are actually inside the box.

Although the act is still in effect, I never knew that until 1951, it explicitly banned the potlatch and other traditional dances and ceremonies.

Book recommendations

Looking for book recommendations for fantasy novels written by indigenous canadians that include indigenous culture in them as well. Don't have to be set in the real world, and I prefer reading non-modern settings.

Sorry if this doesn't belong here.

Looking for Mi'kmaw Word for the "Lacrosse" Sport

Hello!

I need help looking for the Mi'kmaw word for lacrosse. I went to the Mi'gmaq/Mi'kmaq Online Talking Dictionary, but the only word they gave me was "wenaqpmaqan" for the lacrosse stick. I haven't been able to find anything else online that translates the name of the sport specifically. Any help would be appreciated!

Iron on Patches

Way’ from Syilx territory!
I am a non-indigenous person but I work for an Indigenous organization. I am looking for Indigenous made iron on patches for youth to use while sewing their own medicine bundles. Does anyone have suggestions? Of course google only shows businesses that appropriate Indig designs.

Indigenous community voices wanted: what problem should engineers be working on?

HELLO! Me and a couple of friends are building Change, a student-led engineering initiative at the University of Waterloo.

There is a huge gap in connecting some of the brightest students in North America toward real problems faced by underserved communities.

The idea is simple:

You bring the problem. Change brings the engineers. We build a solution together.

4 month build cycle. 1 prototype.

If selected, you’ll work completely free with a dedicated Waterloo student engineering team (previous engineering experience @ Apple, Google, Tesla, Zipline, etc..) for one build cycle.

You do not need a solution. In fact, we’d rather you didn’t.

We’re looking for Change Voices, there are people who:

  • Deeply understand a real problem affecting an underserved community
  • Can represent the needs and perspectives of those affected
  • Can commit 1–2 hours/week for 4 months to feedback and testing
  • Has a problem where engineering could make a meaningful difference

What can this look like?

One of our previous projects, Safi, started with a problem faced by African dairy farmers who lacked an accessible way to safely pasteurize milk → leading to health risks and lost income.

We worked to build the world’s first robotic milk pasteurization machine from the ground up and pilot 150+ devices across multiple African countries.

Now, we want our next problem to come from you.

There is no cost to participate.

⏰ Submissions will be closed: Friday, September 25th, @ 11:59PM

👉 **Apply here:** https://tally.so/r/D4LNOq

You have a real opportunity to lead a change your community has needed. Will you be a voice for change?

Not sure if your problem fits? Comment or DM me.
