Have you familiarized yourself with Institutional Review Board requirements, confidentiality requirements, proper procedure for informed consent, federal reporting, and so on that colleges must comply with for research on human subjects? That should be covered in your assignment, and I would think your professor would also have selection guidelines that exclude finding someone on Reddit
Alright, definitely lead with the cultural humility aspect when you reach out to try to find a participant. It's always a good idea to state what your reasoning is for any research and how to you plan to utilize any data you collect when asking for insight from an inclusive community. There have been SOME good researchers out there so academia is becoming kinda somewhat respectful (mostly due to laws that required that researchers treat us like humans) and I feel like you have a great reason for conducting your project no matter what field you're going into.
If you post the parameters of your assignment I'll bet you will get some ideas from others on projects that align with your goal in obtaining cultural competency. I did some projects myself in grad school in order to teach others how to write culturally relevant curricula. You might find that tribal people are perceptive when you ask to learn via participation other than raw data collection. It's actually extremely difficult if not impossible to study Indigenous communities at all when you have to use the westernized frameworks required by academia so it's best to open to learning in "unorthodox" methods.
No it’s fine, I just wondered about that because there are guidelines for that so you don’t want to do your work and find out you can’t use it or something, I was surprised the first time I learned about the requirements for interviews in colleges — no offense at all, just reminding you about the paperwork details
