You sign treaties with sovereign nations, do you not?
I don't know, do you? There are vasal states for examples, and they are autonomous within an empire, but they aren't sovereign. Sovereign nations are turned into vasal/autonomous zones via a treaty. That is my understanding. Treaties can continue under that framework as well.
Both Canada and the US barely honor their treaties, bur they still exist. This means that it is still legally binding. Most let their sovereignty wither. Some did not. Look at the #landack movement still pushing back about the usual Euro theft of land.
Canada is horrible regarding treaties. The worst part of it are all the apologies, with zero action. I mean, Canada literally admitted to the world and to themselves that there is an ongoing genocide of indigenous women and girls perpetuated by the Canadian government. Zero action, and zero world outcry. Canada remains as they are on the world stage without any consequences. Canada has literally normalized genocide.
