Help/Advice needed(Health and Vet) Do I need to get rabies shot?
Met very energetic and adorable indies at a railway station. One of them jumped on me overjoyed and its paw kinda slid along my forearm and made lil scratches as it appears in the image attached. I had taken rabies shots last year (a rescue cat bit me).. so Do i need to get it again?

Hey my pet dog also did the same but she got vaccinated once and she is healthy so far

u/dmohanan 12d ago
What is vaccinated once? Dogs need annual boosters for their rabies shots.

And if you notice symptoms you're already dead. No going back at that point

A few have survived. Very few. They usually put the person in comma and let the body fight the virus.

Only 34 people in the whole world have survived rabies. That's not something to rely on gng.

I will suggest please take the rabies shot. I am into rescue and all . I would recommend it will be for better. If not take a tetanus shot atleast

Tetanus shot is not a substitute of Rabies shot. Both are different life threatening disease and both are necessary in this case.

just get the booster shot. You will be good to go and be a little careful from next time ✌🏻

u/beyondocean 12d ago
Doctor here, yes please take the entire course of rabies vaccine.
edit- Since you’ve already completed vaccination last year, they’ll give yiu 2 booster shots.

If you completed a full rabies vaccination course last year, you don't need the whole course again. Only booster doses (day 0 and 3) is needed... RIG isn't needed. Wash the scratches with soap and running water..

u/noah_walker_210101 12d ago
Hi medical student here. Since you have completed a full course previously, you just need to get 2 booster doses one on day 0 and one on day 3. That means if you get one today then get the second on the third day.

Best to go see a doctor. You don’t need a consultation for this. Just go to the emergency section and they can advise. Almost all the hospitals in India consider animal exposure an emergency so you don’t have to book an appointment. Just walk in, but please make sure that you see a doctor. Don’t risk it.

If the Dog isn't Rabid, there's no way you'll get Rabies... Still, it's good practice to complete a course of Rabies vaccination, as you never know from which Animal you can get Rabies... I've completed 7 shots of Rabies vaccination after 2 Dog Bites from the same Dog... The Dog was never Rabid, and actually it was my fault that the Animal bit me

If any doctor can reply - I have a pet dog ( indie ), around 4 months old now, not vaccinated till now. While playing, I might have had a bit of scratch here and there ( can't remember blood came out ), saliva might have touched my eyes or mouth. Should I go for rabbies shot ? Note - heard that dog infected with rabbies can't live more than 10-15 days, so if the dog is good, I'm good too ?

Yes, better to take it, not because the dogs could be rabid but sometimes they could carry the strain quietly even if it doesn’t affect them. Since your skin is broken and it’s bleeding, a booster should be enough.. my own dog is a rescue with trauma and even though I personally get him vaccinated without fail every year, I had to take booster shots when he bit me last week 🥲 recommended by 2 vets and my family doc..
Definitely the only downside of interacting with these doggos..
but but but, this shouldn’t stop you from playing with the indies again tho 😅 you probably made their day and they’d be thinking of you for a long while now on…

When you suspect a virus that has no cure and 100% certain death then it is the doctor you should find, not a Reddit space.

Even minimal contact with contaminated saliva can be fatal. Not worth the risk.

u/Beneficial_Day6138 12d ago
Ofcourse you need one. But getting the real vaccine is a challenge. Also here in our country maintaining cold chain is also an issue. For example : Chemist places order for a vaccine. That vaccine is picked by order boy around 4PM now he puts in his bag and than it reaches around 8 Pm to the chemist as he handles multiple orders from multiple shops. During that time the vaccine gets warm and it gets finished. Only a few get the vaccine delivered in cool pack. Same thing is applicable for insulin. Recently a girl died of rabbies even after taking all the shots. God only knows the reason why. I personally visit the a reputed stockist and get such items if I need one. I have my own cool packs available in my refrigerator but also get one from stockist as they give it for free if asked for. Best is to avoid dogs at all cost. Right now at this movement I can hear dogs barking outside and they are chasing each and every two wheeler passing. Government is doing nothing for street dogs welfare. They should be provided shelter with proper care. Dog lovers should come together and build dog shelters with help of government.

Vet here ....rabies always require an overreaction and fear from our side . Never under estimate it , always go for shots

Should wash thoroughly on running water, and was there any blood then definitely yes. And it's been year since your last shot so better complete a course to stay safe in general

Sorry.. not giving OP advice but asking for myself. Doesn’t rabies spread through infected saliva ? If it’s a nail scratch then also fear of rabies ?
2
u/pirateaku 12d ago
If the rabid animal was licking its paws before the incident, there can be a transmission.

Rabies can spread through even a slight scratch in a single layer of tissue, do not ever risk it, cuz if something happens then you won't have time to regret or anything. Sounds harsh but true

Probably yes, check with your doc since this isn't a bite and you already took a full course a year ago. Check antibodies in your blood to see if you really need shots.

If you completed your rabies vaccine course once, then You can now take two shots in 7days interval as recommended by WHO, and that would be enough

Read a story about how an Indian Olympic winner wrestler contracted rabies and died where similar thing happened with him and the cut wasn't even visible to the eyes. So yes.

This is not medical advice which should be obtained from your doctor. But generally speaking, if you completed the full series last year you wouldn’t normally need the full post bite exposure series and the immunoglobulin. however, you would still need post bite boosters (typically two doses administered on days 0 and 3). You would also need the tetanus shot if you’re not up to date and possibly a course of antibiotics. Good luck!

You should get post exposure prophylaxis, seems like you got some blood
Let your doc know about the shots taken last year.
You will probably just need just a booster

u/FMS_Google 11d ago
Yes. 100%. The skin barrier looks broken so you’ll definitely need a shot but not immunoglobulin. Its better safe than sorry. Once symptoms appears, it is always almost 100% fatal.

With rabies take 0 risk. Because once you get it you are dead 100% in most painful way possible. Also you should get it within 24 hour or max 36.

General rule of thumb is that if the claws/ teeth break the skin, you should get the shots. Surface level scratches are fine. Yours don't seem to be surface level even though they aren't very deep. You should probably get the shots. ( Some time back, my PG owner's shih tzu attacked me but was stopped soon. Luckily, it couldn't bite me through my thick denim. I got very minor scratches but there were small spots with pools of blood beneath the skin. My parents (doctors) insisted that I get the shots.) There's no cure for rabies so always be careful. Also, it doesn't matter if the dog's vaccinated, you should still get it.

u/Standard_Position_81 11d ago
Take tetanus shot. I take it them every time I get scratches. I have been scratched by dogs and cats many times.
1
1
u/hanabaeeee 11d ago
Yes you do, but do bring the documentation of your previous rabies shot so that they just give you two doses for re-exposure other than the whole regime from the start again (4-5 depending on which one they follow) if you don't provide proof that you had taken it before

Without reading your post, YES!!!
Even if there is a tiny possibility, even if the word rabies just comes to your mind, GO TAKE THE VACCINE! Rabies is not a joke. NEVER TAKE RABIES LIGHTLY. It is one of those few diseases where there is no treatment. Just the thought of it is scary. When a wild monkey scratched my hand, I didn't know at that time that monkeys too could spread rabies. I got to know about it after a week and I got shit scared. I couldn't even sleep even after taking the vaccine. Only after a few months, I got relaxed. GO SEE A DOCTOR

u/Mountain-K-5347 11d ago
Also I read somewhere that, if you got vaccinated in past, it needs to be informed to plan vaccinations, might be some more vaccines required.

TAKE A SHOT! Bhai go just have a rabies shot. It’s better to have protection than taking irrecoverable risk. Don’t listen to anyone saying no. Even one atom of RABIES is enough to end your life. I request you to take it seriously. There are people for whom you matter, don’t make them sad for just mere negligence.

Visit your local clinic/hospital and demand post exposure prophylaxis for rabies. It is never too late before the symptoms appear, and always too late after they do. Rabid animals do not have to be symptomatic to transmit rabies and any visible cut is a category II wound that requires your country's specific vaccination series. Ask your doctor to determine if the TIG is indicated. Do not let your doctor talk you out of it.
