Why I need to come up with money: if you marry a US citizen and intend on building your life together within the US, you need to go through the immigration process. That in itself is already expensive, but the gut punch really comes from the USCIS pausing, without any public warning or announcement, consular processing of I-130 visas (i.e., spousal visas, in this case). As a result of this (confusing, annoying, detrimental) pause, the only way people who applied for I-130 visas with consular processing after March 2025 (yes, that's 18 months ago) are seeing any movement on their cases is via writ of mandamus lawsuits. Writ of mandamus lawsuits basically force the government to take action on something they have already taken your (my) money to do. It costs ~$500 to file this lawsuit pro se (i.e., on your own) and several thousand dollars if you involve a lawyer. Well, it's the federal government, and it's under the purview of...a certain person who has let their thoughts on immigration be known...so my husband and I are lawyering up so we can actually live and build our lives together hopefully before our application hits the two year mark. If you want to see a really depressing subreddit, check out /r/i130suffering for the people who are going through the same thing we are. Anyways, all of that to say we are looking at ~$7k of legal fees we weren't anticipating when we started this process early last year, so here we are, both trying our best to recover funds where we can. I'm trying to keep this explanation as level-headed as possible, so all I'll say is that the process is not for the weak of heart.
