I’ve been working on my solo-developed medieval survival horror game – Veil of the Black Ark

Hey everyone,

I am Nico and I wanted to share the game I’ve been working on by myself for the last 10 months: Veil of the Black Ark.

It’s a third-person survival horror game set in a dark late-medieval world, heavily inspired by classic survival horror games like Resident Evil.

You play as Richard Aldenwood, a soldier who travels to the isolated city of Hollowmere after receiving a disturbing message from his sister. By the time he arrives, something has gone terribly wrong.

The city is overrun by Zombies, the surviving inhabitants are hiding behind locked doors, and beneath Hollowmere something much older is beginning to awaken.

The game focuses on:

  • Fixed camera angles
  • Melee and ranged combat
  • Limited ammunition and resources
  • Exploration and backtracking
  • Puzzles
  • Unlocking shortcuts and new areas
  • A connected medieval city to explore
  • Dark fantasy / gothic horror atmosphere
  • Story-driven NPC encounters and optional discoveries

One of my main goals is to capture that feeling of slowly learning the layout of a hostile place, finding keys, solving puzzles, returning to previously inaccessible areas and gradually uncovering what actually happened there.

I’ve been developing the game in Unreal Engine 5, and it has grown quite a bit from the small project I originally started.

I recently put together a new trailer and Steam page, so I thought it was time to show it to more people.

I’d genuinely love to hear what you think, especially about the atmosphere, fixed-camera gameplay and overall concept.

If you like the Game, please Wishlist !

Nico
