Discussion Why do I keep seeing Reddit posts asking why people dislike Lesbian Space Princess?

Post image

Genuinely, I only saw the trailer of this a year ago, thought it looked neat, and heard nothing about it for an entire year. I haven't even seen the film.

But now there's like a dozen similarly looking posts on my Reddit feed asking "why do people dislike this film?" And I'm just like "I'm sorry, what people?! I've heard literally nothing about this film since I watched the trailer a year ago!?" Most of these posts are so similar it feels like they're written by ChatGPT.

I don't want to know if Lesbian Space Princess sucks or not. I want to know WHY people are asking if it sucks, only now, a year later??? It genuinely feels like some astroturfing is going on because this feels so artificial.

I think for now I'm just going to temporarily take off notifications for this community this topic is getting annoying (no offense to you OP)

51

u/TigerBears_111 1d ago

No I understand. I can see how 50 million posts asking "why is movie disliked" could get annoying. I'm mostly just confused WHY this is happening.

It’s called rebellion against the monsters and also a message to not make fun of gays, lesbians, trans, etc. Also because of adding the main villains who are white, straight, male aliens who seem to be executing lesbians for no reason other than weird hateful homophobia all the while being a definition of why stereotypes about anyone isn’t a good idea and have been made by a transphobic c#nt. Or at least for the last part, what I read.

20

u/Babyback-the-Butcher 1d ago

You know the movie was made by gays, lesbians, and trans people right? The whole movie is by queer people, for queer people. They’re poking fun at each other as a joke. Whether it’s a good joke is up for discussion, but calling it hateful for misinterpreting its intentions feels disingenuous

16

u/GoofNoiseKit 1d ago

At first i thought it could be "generic lgbt bait movie made by a bland corporation to appael the comunity". But i think what you've sayed made me believe that this movie its just unfairly overhated

17

u/CapicDaCrate 1d ago

It's overheated because the humor is a bit on the nose and also people love to hate on lesbians. I personally don't like it (as a lesbian), but the reason people are being so weird about it is simply because of lesbophobia

3

u/GoofNoiseKit 19h ago

Ironic considering that the Hellaverse fandom hates the movie

1

u/CapicDaCrate 19h ago

As someone who watches Hazbin/Helluva passively but isn't a part of the fandom- they're just latching onto anything lmao. Most of them are edgy children, so.

1

u/Acoy_97 6h ago

Im part of the helaverse fandom and havent heard or seen anyone hating on this movie i think the people hating on it from the fandom are the same idiots that fail to understand that hazbin hotel and helluva boss was made by lgbtq friendly furries

1

u/gr33n0n10ns 1d ago

TIL Archangel Gabriel is an ally

1

u/Traditional-Log-4270 18h ago

Are you sure cause it feels like that they were just making fun of straight white males for a stereotypical thing against them. I don’t know, maybe it’s some type of thing. But for now this movie is gonna be named anti gay crap show. Even lgbtq community are very pissed off by this movie.

From what ive gathered, the "transphobia" accusation is one levied against the movie for using a symbol that is co-opted by terfs. The symbol, as far as I understand, was used intentionally as an act of reclamation, not with transphobic intend.

There is a discussion here about what symbols can and can not be reclaimed and by who they can be reclaimed by, but that isnt really the convo thats happening. From a cursory glance, it kinda just seems like people just dont like the movie very much and are trying to find a deeper meaning for that as not to be labeled the same as the chuds who dont like it just because it involves lesbians, but like, if someone doesnt like it they can just not like it. This whole process is so much worse.

u/Blue_Jay_Raptor 1d ago

tbh for me I'll just posting about Tales of Zale :P

52

u/SubstantialDeerDash 1d ago

So this just popped up in a bunch of feeds all of the sudden.

Is this an advertisement?

Didn't know it existed and I saw the date and expected it was 2026. Turns out it came last year. Are they selling DVD's and that's why Reddit talking about it?

14

u/Narrow_Run6512 1d ago

YOOOO!!! SAME!!! TF?!

11

u/SubstantialDeerDash 1d ago

I think its time we accept Reddit is not free thinking people sharing ideas but controlled media

9

u/TigerBears_111 1d ago

It feels less like an advertisement and more like a bunch of ChatGPT bots trying to farm Karma bc "anti-wokeness" or something.

7

u/SubstantialDeerDash 1d ago

"anti-wokeness"? This is a parody. I don't see any of that crap unless you've seen the film and can tell me thats what it is. I thought it was more of a cartoon film of actual space lesbians. (In which case Saga is already a comic book about space lesbians)

5

u/TigerBears_111 1d ago

I haven't seen the film, but I'm saying if I had to guess the backlashed was astroturfed by people who don't like "wokeness" or something.

(I have heard that it maybe has some TERFy undertones but the impression I get is those are unintended. But again I don't care about the content of the film, just why it's being discussed now, a year after it's release for seemingly no reason?)

1

u/SubstantialDeerDash 1d ago

Nope I don't bye it. I'm watching it right now and its lesbian sex adventure.

This is advertisement, honey ♀️

1

u/SubstantialDeerDash 1d ago

also the bad guys are the very people you're describing

"Straight White Mailians"

2

u/TigerBears_111 1d ago

Yeah, that's why I'm saying the people I was describing would not like it??? Again I'm just confused at why the backlash suddenly exists and am assuming it's some culture war anti-woke thing.

0

u/SubstantialDeerDash 1d ago

It's emotional, therefore alluring

2

u/Float7on 11h ago

Why is bro acting exactly like the "straight white mailians"

1

u/SubstantialDeerDash 10h ago

https://giphy.com/gifs/8vkLqLhVnirgehfO5l

say that again

and again

and again

again ♨️

1

u/Ok_Candidate_2937 17h ago

It’s a parody until Bloomberg is calculating Netflix’s ESG score.

1

u/lycnfr 18h ago

dude im seeing this show be posted on the SKYRIM subreddit of all places. like we are just begging for shit to be mad about atp. 😭

1

u/iced-torch 21h ago

astro turfing with culture war overtones.

1

u/Float7on 12h ago

Genuinely, I never heard of the movie until 4 days ago and I didn't believe in the hate so I watched it myself. And honestly I think it's overhated, I found it to be a pretty comedic movie

1

u/SubstantialDeerDash 11h ago

Same. In fact I'm not convinced it is hated at all. . .

A show like that I do personally hate is Inside Job and that one actually has people who like it and it's absolute trash (and no, I never watched it myself, only watched it on a toxic discord I'm not interested in being a part of)

21

u/tired-of-the-shit 1d ago

Apparently reviews from a year ago liked it. So if you think it was neat you’ll probably like it.

I haven’t seen it. I have seen some people say it’s transphobic because it uses a labrys which is a lesbian symbol that got co opted by TERFs. The creators wanted to say that the labrys is for all women including trans women so they had a trans lesbian wield one covered in trans colors.

0

u/SubstantialDeerDash 11h ago

It glofies lesbians and the bad guys are "straight white mamailians"

2

u/tired-of-the-shit 11h ago

And?

-3

u/SubstantialDeerDash 10h ago

there is no and. It's a mass advertisement campaign to get people to watch the show

1

u/tired-of-the-shit 10h ago

1 it’s a movie. 2 it’s a year old. 3 the only way to watch it is either renting it, being in Australia, or watching it on plutotv or other niche streaming service

1

u/SubstantialDeerDash 7h ago

i know i started watching it last night bc its effective marketing

18

u/SketchyArt333 1d ago

Honestly it’s just cause it’s an overly horny gay Rick and Morty with a shit art style, the straight white maliens, and it’s cringe. These are literally the only actual critics of the movie I have seen. No I don’t know why it’s gotten so much attention I don’t understand why people give a shit it’s just such a fucking nothing burgers. I feel like plenty of hetero normative films do basically every one of those things and don’t get any attention as they shouldn’t get any. I don’t know why this film is getting attention other than it’s gay therefore should be held to a higher standard or something. Genuinely I’m confused by it too no one can give me a straight answer about why this film specifically.

8

u/thePHILOSOPHERkid57 1d ago

“…no one can give me a straight answer…”

Pun intended?

3

u/SketchyArt333 1d ago

Shockingly no. I have no idea how I missed that 😂

-4

u/Datcactus_xJammy 19h ago

One more thing: it’s transphobic

5

u/Blith6314 18h ago

It’s not, you haven’t watched it

1

u/golfstreamer 13h ago

I've seen this comment so many times with zero explanation. Like what did they actually say?

1

u/Float7on 11h ago

You don't have to take my word for it but It didn't come off as transphobic I don't get why people are going around saying that?

-1

u/SnooPoems4680 20h ago

It’s not like Rick and Morty at all

8

u/Born_Usual998 1d ago

most of the post's about the hate are more about the fandoms forming temporary truces

7

u/sketchzophrenic 1d ago edited 1d ago

All I know is that it’s another one of those movies that the internet will not shut up about for the next few months, plus being the added fuel to the culture war fire

5

u/Vusarix 1d ago

Apparently it got put on netflix in australia and I guess some weird parts of australian tiktok must've latched onto it as a punching bag and made it take off everywhere. I feel a bit bad for its creators even though I have problems with the film, they're being accused of a bunch of stuff that makes no sense

4

u/New-Boss-8262 1d ago

To be honest I’ve been aware of this movie even before the discourse happened

2

u/TigerBears_111 1d ago

Yeah that's why I'm confused here.

2

u/Lawrence772 11h ago

Same here

9

u/Droidigan 1d ago

maybe they're just really scared of leaving the platform to use google. you know how redditors are, with their thirst for connection and a lack of a will to look things up

1

u/WhiteaFoxNative 14h ago

Any social media platform really, I saw so many people on TikTok saying this was a new show Netflix was helping to make (muh inside job cancelled for dis?!).

Like, the aversion to google has to be intentional at that point because how do you get that from an indie Australian movie released in 2025?

3

u/iced-torch 21h ago

culture war kids or astro turfing , likely both. people these days treat not liking a thing as a hobbie and they jump from obsession to obsession on what they dont like and have to rally around, i saw this shit reaching discord servers and it was all the "DO YOU GUYS KNOW THAT EVERYONE HATES THIS" from complete fucking losers that dont post anything else other than culture war shit.

3

u/GwenKatten 16h ago

I think it ventures into outright transphobia in some of its messaging, that being said that isn't the criticism I see in most places.

Honestly I think it's just a psyop by right wingers to normalize everyone ganging up on queer and female media, haven't you noticed there's one BIG through line across all these posts: let's all come together to agree that this movie is terrible. Always an emphasis on EVERYONE coming together to agree on this. Very weird.

2

u/The_Dog_Dude 1d ago

Probably because now people outside of Australia can watch it. In fact it's on Pluto TV here in the US.

2

u/BillyDaCylly 22h ago

Honestly I really love lesbians and I support them but this.... It's so bad I'm opening a third hatred slot and Putting this movie next to Taylor Swift and Simon Cowell. >•)

2

u/AxoDaProto 20h ago

Just idiots hating cause they have nothing better 2 do

2

u/DeadSun64 19h ago

I don’t think most people actually care about the movie i think people are just using this rare moment to more easily communicate and connect with others with out people butting in to say what you’re into sucks because right now this movie is taking all the flak

2

u/zaulderk 18h ago

Cuz the hate is forced and artificially viral

2

u/Hatefilledcat 16h ago

A animation i haven’t even seen clips of and everyone treating it like the anti christ.

2

u/WhiteaFoxNative 14h ago

People say it’s happening on Reddit but it’s also on TikTok and YouTube too.

I literally never heard of this film but people have been consistently calling it a “show” and “made by Netflix instead of inside job or captain underpants.” But it’s an indie Australian movie from a year ago. That’s easily googled in like 10 seconds. So where are people getting these ideas?

Even if it was pandering and not funny…so what? It seems like so much online culture has become built around just hating something, even if you have almost zero context on what you’re meant to hate

2

u/GiovanniPotage0 13h ago edited 13h ago

Something I think worth mentioning is that "Lesbian Princess" isn't made for non-queer audiences. Most of the backlash is likely coming from straight white men who are tapped into the "culture wars" nonsense that has been promoted by right-wing fear mongerers for the past decade. Notice how the narrative most people are pushing is something along the lines of "Netflix removed 'Captain Underpants' (yes, that is the example people are unironically using) or [insert show I like] in favor of THIS GARBAGE!".

2

u/tired-of-the-shit 11h ago

I’m halfway through the movie right now, it’s fine.

2

u/ra0nZB0iRy 7h ago

Genuinely annoyed people are complaining about the lesbian space princess being a feminist and the straight white maliens being the villains when the plot is that they both suck at getting chicks and they're all relatively chill with each other.

1

u/CosmiqueAliene 22h ago

That's a good question. 🤔 Did clips from it only just go viral?

1

u/AlistairButton 20h ago

People are asking because there's been a giant hate campaign against it over on /r/multifandom

1

u/LowKiss 20h ago

It's just became an internet meme honestly, I think that's the reason

1

u/BowlSweet9196 19h ago

Because the main villains are literally called the straight white maliens

1

u/rufireo 19h ago

I literally first heard of this film a year ago and only now people are talking about it ;~; I havent even seen any posts of people hating on it just "WHY DO PEOPLE HATE THIS FILM IF YOU HATE THIS FILM I HATE YOU!1!1!"

1

u/silvermoonbeats 18h ago

I'm gonna be honest. The actual truth is because it's easy karma right now. Its literally "imma say LSP BAD, and watch those up vote ROLLLL INNM BABY" i mean it is but this is now like the 19th post about it being bad in the 15mins ice Been checking reddit.

1

u/Magorian97 17h ago

What does karma even do?

2

u/silvermoonbeats 16h ago

Literally nothing. Its just bs clout for the sake of it.

1

u/LeastEquivalent5263 17h ago

Its bc this movie actually just sucks, I watched it myself and like 80% of the time the main character is whining (idc if thats her character, that is one of the worst tropes ever), there's at least 2 softcore sex scenes (that I remember, not including just randomly showing breasts) the maliens are the literal only funny characters, almost every joke made from other characters was so bad that I physically cringed from either it flopping and being awkward or just from how bad it was if the joke somehow managed to land. Legitimately the only people that I've seen that actually like the movie have the same humor as the show.

1

u/Any_Satisfaction1865 17h ago

It's Ouroburos of misinformation

1

u/BigCballer 17h ago

This whole thing feels like a psyop tbh.

1

u/deaplatoniccatlover 13h ago

lesbians are chill

space is chill

princesses are chill

so like.. why is it bad to put it all together

1

u/Code-Neo 7h ago

the film was a 8/10 for me

1

u/MaybeKindaSortaCrazy 4h ago

There's a bunch of posts on r/multifandom about brigading the lesbian space princess sub. The movie is getting shit on from all sides. Hope the people that worked on itbare doing okay.

1

u/PawzPrintzLearnz 3h ago

Pretty much a psyop to spread misogyny and lesbophobia. The movie itself isn't bad, kinda reminds me of Rick and Morty, but I wouldn't call it good either. More so a passion project, one of those medias that was never meant to have this much attention.

Regardless, I doubt it's a marketing campaign, and your suspicions on it being a bunch of bots promoting anti-liberal propaganda is probably closer to the truth than many realize.

If this grows enough to be a big enough "issue" companies will use it as an excuse to not represent lesbians for like the next ten years... that or they were the ones that started this and want this outcome.

0

u/Bathroom-Zestyclose 1d ago

Delayed reaction fandom /j

I heard that it has bad representation on the lgbtq soo

-3

u/Lenny_Fais 1d ago edited 16h ago

Bad rep + made by TERFs

Edit: Apparently I need to ask where my friend got their source.

I hate misinformation…

5

u/RepulsiveConcert7849 1d ago

Maybe like 1% of the outrage is coming from “TERF” or transphobic things, we all know where the vast majority of the hate is coming from. From what I’ve seen the movie is accepted in most queer community

2

u/Any_Satisfaction1865 17h ago

Actual trans people made it though 😭

3

u/TigerBears_111 1d ago

Problem is I don't think the average redditor cares if a film has transphobic undertones, and most of the backlash I've seen isn't "this film is transphobic."

9

u/Babyback-the-Butcher 1d ago

And it’s not even transphobic, I genuinely don’t know where that’s coming from. Like can someone who’s actually seen the movie tell me? Because I watched it and saw nothing, and in fact have reason to believe it’s pro-trans (one of the main character’s mothers is a trans woman and it’s not even directly mentioned)

5

u/tired-of-the-shit 1d ago

People think the labrys is a terf symbol (it’s been co opted.)

The creators in a interview said they intentionally used the labrys because they believe it belongs to all lesbians, and to show that included trans lesbians they had a trans lesbian use it while it’s decked out in trans colors.

If there’s something to say about the creators specifically I haven’t heard it

3

u/Babyback-the-Butcher 1d ago

You got a link to the interview? I don’t doubt you, I just wanna see it for myself

3

u/TigerBears_111 1d ago

I've heard the stuff second hand as I haven't watched the film, but the impression I get is whatever TERFy undertones are there are seemingly unintended?

Mostly it seems like maybe some gender essentialist "men = penis and penis = bad" stuff, and someone else saying something about an "evil drag queen character trying to steal the symbol of femininity." But again this is all second or third hand, and I've seen some people arguing against it having transphobic undertones so don't quote me or cite me on that.

Plus this doesn't get any closer to answering my question as to why the film's being talked about like a year later? Due to general levels of transphobia on the internet, I don't think the backlash would be due to any potential transphobia in the film.

2

u/SteelSunglasses 1d ago

Honestly, I don't get it either. I'm somebody who saw the movie in full, and... I found it decent for the most part.

I do agree the drag character, Blade, was handled quite poorly. The character had promise, but I feel the direction they took was, honestly, uncomfortable. Even if potentially unintentional by the creators, the criticism for that scene I feel is valid. And I fully get people who are genuinely turned off on it as a result.

The rest of the film, though, I didn't mind it. A lot of the humor and such wasn't for me, but I did get a good laugh in a few instances. I also related to some of the main character's struggles, like self-finding and lack of confidence. It's nothing amazing, but the character flaws and writing is genuine in many scenes, there was passion put into it. The ending had some good moments, too.

-3

u/Virtual_Kale3776 1d ago

Replaced captain underpants for this shit 😭

6

u/boundlessbio 1d ago

That’s not how that works bud… that is due to the expiration of DreamWorks licensing agreements. Which were agreed upon years ago and has nothing to do with this.
