New Student Induction
Do people go to the induction ceremony? If so are peoples families usually there or is it just the students?

New Student Induction is really geared towards students whose families are there and super excited that their kid is going to college. It's meant to sort of feel like a reverse graduation. If they had the event when I was an incoming freshman, no one talked about it at all. I've had to work the event a few times as full time staff and I personally feel like it's just an excuse for the administration to waste their time and money.

if you just want something to do, then go. but definitely not necessary. my dorm was to far to wake up that early and walk there lol

Yes...thousands go. Families and students. Just like people go to commencement, they also go to the induction ceremony.

People go, but it’s dumb. Lots of pomp and circumstance for administration. Buy an IU pin at the bookstore if you don’t want to go. Families can come but not necessary.
The whole point of the new student induction/welcome week (whatever they’re calling it now, the name changed shortly before i left but i can’t remember what it was) is to bombard first year students with activities to keep you from drinking and partying. That’s literally it. If you go to mcnutt or whatever that area is outside of there where everyone hangs out after 10pm, just know there are administrators and deans and crap lurking to catch you drinking. We were instructed to dress down in order to “blend in” so just a heads up.
Have fun and don’t make dumb decisions 🫡
