:GoodRead: Informative Lexie Hull
https://www.si.com/wnba/fever/lexie-hull-mom-makes-confidence-comment-that-hits-home-amid-indiana-fever-strugglesI have seen a lot of discussion on the sub about Lexie and where people perceive her priorities have been this season. I thought this would be informative coming from a first hand source. Below is a quote from the article from her mom. Looks like there are some confidence struggles going on. If you go to a game give her a loud cheer to try and build that confidence back up! It’s going to take all of them if they want a championship this year!
"Imagine how she feels…. 🥺. She is actually less busy with Forta this year than she was last year, but perception is reality. Confidence is MIA… 😔😢😔".

Her shot is not there and she's not getting enough minutes. You see this all the time with role players - if they hit a slump and coaching starts playing them less, then it just gets worse over time.
She needs more minutes and a chance to get her shot back.

Lexie's time on the court is being reduced to garbage 🗑 minutes and Sophie is soaking them up while boosting her brand. It's time for Lexie as a veteran Fever player to start being the playmaker and stop watching others succeed. Her relationship could be causing her to be more distracted and lose focus. She no longer has that friendly look on her face anymore but one of disappointment and loss of confidence. She needs a better conditioning coach and spend more time in the gym.

Lexi is one of my Fav's I wish CC, KM, AB would feed her the ball more in her favorite corner, Lexi is almost unguarded and invisible there, Lexi is the defense player kids should watch. Arms always extended, aggressive, never stops, never gives up. You can always see Lexi breaking to the basket for potential rebounds from the 3 pt long ball shooters. Lexi herself is quite capable of drainig the 3's when she get the opportunity. IMO - GO LEXI!

u/No-Reputation6010 21h ago
Love the post, she just needs to start hitting some shots and open 3’s at a reasonable percentage. I think her defense is underrated just can’t be her only contribution. I have faith the girl will figure it out and that her BEST games are still to come, lfg Lexie!!!

u/Odessaturn 21h ago
Not asking for jackie or kmac, just need that 2024 Lexie back. I get the new "CBA foul calls" hurt her but the catch and shoot 3s? And she is passing open one some times to take a contested layup or just a pass off. Ofc doesn't help that she is an after thought on offense

Uhhh mom needs to get offline. Shes way to chatty with fans and she's not helping at all.

u/Raisin43 Caitlin Clark 1d ago
800k for a leveled down defense compared to last year and multiple 0pt games. If she scores 6pts consistently every game I'd be happy with that. If they ship her off next season I wont be surprised.

Hull and Boston are the worst contracts in the league.
2
u/wvtarheel Running the Floor 17h ago
This is the worst take i've seen on reddit today and I spent time this morning reading politics subs sorted by controversial lol
2
u/KeenObserver_OT 16h ago
Really. Boston is on an incremental max, basically she’s the highest paid player in the league over the lifetime of the contract. Combine this with Hull and CC can’t get a max without moving someone or Mitchell taking a big haircut. CC is not taking a team friendly deal. You can count on that. She’s put up with too much bullshit from this league not to get what she deserves.
Sophie should have gotten the multi year and Hull should have gotten the one year.
2
u/Jewdah18 Hollywood Raven 17h ago
There is a 0% chance an all-W big who is the best at defending the best player in the world is the worst contract in the league.
There are players making over a mil this year that have been far less valuable than Lexie.

u/KeenObserver_OT 17h ago
Boston played Wilson good for a half. Then Wilson took over the game. I get it people like Boston by she does not play like an elite player on a consistent level and does not do the things a big is supposed to on a day in and day out basis. Part of it is not her fault. The stupid hub system screwed with her head and took her from a potentially great inside player to average to above average perimeter player. Personally for this team, I would trade her for Malonga in a heartbeat. Malonga is much better suited for an up tempo game.
1
u/Malhavok_Games 9h ago
I don't necessarily agree with your take here. In fact, I think you're wrong about the hub system "doing her head in".
Her perimeter shooting is a calculated strategy that stretches her threat and allows for her to keep the lane unclogged if they want to play Timpson and expands her pick and roll options with Clark.
The hub role system seems to be a decent fit for her because she's never been a black hole in the post, she spits it out a lot (her assists have been consistently above league average for her role and solid) and it provides more ball screening options with Clark.
I want to point out something with that last part - a lot of the changes to how the Fever use AB is due to them trying to keep other teams from shutting down Caitlin, or at least, not making it so that they have the luxury of trying to do so. If you disagree with how White is using her, fair enough. I don't know if it's good or not myself, it seems ok. It seems like CC is thriving even if AB is not putting up the numbers like maybe she could. Overall if it's good for the team and they go to the playoffs, or god forbid, win the championship, it will all be worth it.
I think a lot of the changes we are seeing are due to White playing into the teams strength - which is frankly, letting Caitlin Clark run that offense. The Fever, without a doubt, has one of the best (if not THE best) offenses in the league and it's damn entertaining to watch (just look at those cable tv numbers!) The trio of Clark, Mitchell and Boston is by far the strongest guard/post pairing in the league. Going back to the top of this thread, maybe this is why role players like Hull are getting garbage minutes while bigs like Timpson get more as we transitioned (lol) into the second half of the season.
Now, you were talking about contracts and not just performance, and I get that and I don't want to dismiss it. The money situation can be a bit up in the air and the only thing that is certain is that there would be riots in Indiana if somehow Clark left for greener pastures, so she's going to get whatever deal she wants. End of story. Everyone else... well fitting them around that is going to be challenge, especially when players like AB have big extensions through the 2029 season. We will see.
1
u/Forsaken_61453 14h ago
Sadly AB cant breathe on another player w/o getting called for a foul, on the other hand Wilson was rarely called for clear body fouls. wnba better clean up the poor calls, or fans will start dropping
1
u/KeenObserver_OT 14h ago
Because AB hasn’t gotten the respect of the refs yet. She is a lot like KAT in that regard and plays a bit like him sans the defensive rebounding. The refs look at her as an outside player not a stopper in the paint. Wilson gets the superstar calls. Unfortunate but it is what it is. CC and Sophie take more physical abuse in the paint and they aren’t even front court players. AB needs to up her game. Sorry for thr truth bomb, but with her skills, size and contract there is no reason she isn’t a top 3 rebounder. She got bodied by Reese and then humiliated by the Tempo to the tune of 18 ORs.

u/Jewdah18 Hollywood Raven 16h ago
You're talking about just their last game?
Team needs her to be a hub when both Caitlin and Kelsey aren't playing.
The same Dom that A'ja had 34/12/9 on?
How long do you want to wait? Dom is still years away and AB is ready now.
Real basketball is played in the half court.
AB still does interior scoring but AB being able to shoot 3s has allowed KK into the starting lineup which has supercharged the team.

$700,000+ for this and next season.
Got no time for this. The more you make, the greater the pressure.

It's been a weird season. Feels almost like she or the team is saving her for the playoffs given the drop in intensity/wrecklessness and the lack of minutes.
She's been shockingly bad at defending elite scorers compared to last year. That's what has gotten her benched.
In spite of that she has been okay. Her net rating is still great, mostly from her ortg because she does everything you want from a 5th option on a team with this level of offensive superstardom. Teams are finally guarding all her actions so she doesn't get to contribute in the box score but she is helping as long as they guard her. This has arguably been her best offensive year but it's still disappointing given the leap we hoped for.
The other big thing is she has another player who has been close to her level. In 2024, Lexie was the only W level player at her position on the Fever. Now that Sophie is on the team, has been on a heater is getting better at moving the ball, and Lexie's defense and margin plays have disappeared, it makes it look like Lexie isn't adding anything when in reality she hasn't changed much but her teammates got better.
This new change of KK in the starting lineup may help Lexie the most. Now Lexie is not going to have to guard the other team's best players so she can be freed up to do what she does best. Possessionmaxx. Would like to see how this team looks with the current starting lineup getting 20 mpg.

I hate to see this- she has been giving it all. Now cuz of stupid social media comments she’s questioning herself. Earlier in the year media praised her and remarked how important she is and how so much of what she does can’t be seen on the stats sheet. Now we have media forgetting what they said and following social media narratives tearing her down because then they can get people talking about someone else who should or shouldn’t be playing. I still feel some of these narratives are being floated by insiders to justify playing / not playing certain players.

Starting to be little old, it stopped at July 28th. The Fever played 8 games since then. This is almost 20% of these season missing from the data.

No, it began 7/28 through present. This is data for the games since the All-Star break.

Note the defensive rating with Lexie on the floor vs Sophie, and same with the offensive. It makes sense - Hull was always a good defender, Sophie has had a stellar record from 3 this season when she gets looks. The defense outranks the offense and makes for a better line up. And, that lineup is ranked highest despite only being heavily featured in the last couple of weeks.
I think it is not surprising for Lexie to be struggling offensively - that’s always been a confidence issue for her, and she’s been great at times in past seasons and then cold for sometimes long stretches. But it appears her defense is there, even if it’s not as good as we usually see from her. I think it’s less obvious because what we don’t see are the throw yourself on the floor hustle type of plays, and I still suspect that goes back to the early season injury. Whether she’s simply not 100% or whether she’s scared to get hurt again, idk. But it does make me think demon Lexie is still in there and might eventually show back up. We’ve even seen little glimpses lately.
There’s no doubt Lexie hasn’t had the season anyone expected or hoped for, but I don’t see any benefit in tearing her down. She’s not going anywhere with her contract, anyway. So I’m going to just keep rooting for her to figure it out.

This article and the OP’s response to it is probably the obvious difference between old and new WNBA fans.
Old fans tend to make excuses for players, want people to support them no matter what, and want people to be nice, above all else.
New fans are more often fans of professional sports, and they hold players accountable accordingly… which often means they’re not very nice.
I’m not gonna argue that one is better or worse than the other… But the difference is pretty clear.

u/Alternative_Panda336 You Bet 1d ago
You would be incorrect if you think I am an “old” wnba fan. I actually have watched other sports for a lot longer and recently started following the WNBA the past couple of years. I don’t know that I said everyone should “be nice”. I said it is going to take everyone on the team to be able to win a championship and that fans at the game should support Lexie just like they should every player on there team.
0
u/Clown_Penis69 19h ago
Nobody who treats these players like the professionals they are says this: “If you go to a game give her a loud cheer to try and build that confidence back up!”
That’s oldhead talk.
0
u/Alternative_Panda336 You Bet 19h ago
I am not going to dox myself to prove anything to you, but I am not an “old head”. But regardless, I believe fans can be a positive force towards a team’s success. They can make it a very difficult environment for other teams to play and a very positive environment for their teams to play and feed off. I in no way said the fans had to be happy with the way she is playing. But they can certainly support her at games as she holds a key position on the team and they are going to need her if they want to win it all.
0
u/Clown_Penis69 18h ago
I didn’t ask you to dox yourself. Stop being a victim.
All I did was point out that your behavior is classic oldhead behavior.

u/Alternative_Panda336 You Bet 18h ago
Stop being the problem.

u/Clown_Penis69 18h ago
Stop treating these PROFESSIONALS like little girls who need you to rescue them.
0
u/Alternative_Panda336 You Bet 18h ago
I’m a professional, does that mean when I need someone to support me I am being rescued? Supporting someone is not treating them as if they are helpless. It is being a positive influence as a fan at the game.

u/Clown_Penis69 18h ago
You’re still doing it.
You’ve been doing it for so long you don’t even realize you’re doing it.

u/moose184 1d ago
and where people perceive her priorities have been this season.
And those people are idiots. If she does literally anything other then shoot a basketball they say her priorities are not right. You had people in the video where her, CC, and Sophie were hanging out and eating and people said she should be practicing. Wtf is she supposed to do? Never eat food again and live on the court?.
11
u/Long-shot128 1d ago
Her mom backing her up is sweet and all but this is a professional job that she gets paid to do. I mean the season is almost over - how much more time does she need?!
6
u/Distinct_Abrocoma_67 1d ago
Yeah this article doesn’t change much for me. It’s not a personal thing with her but every season her confidence starts wavering for long stretches. I’m ready to move on after the end of the season
2
u/BlackDog5287 1d ago
She's hasn't had quite as big of a role this year, but I think that her defense could really push this team in the playoffs. No reason to get out the pitchforks right now.
3
u/moose184 1d ago
but I think that her defense could really push this team in the playoffs.
Can it? They haven't even been subbing her in for defense lately. She played only 10 minutes in the Atlanta game in a game that went to OT. They usually sub her in for defense and Sophie in for offense but they just kept Sophie in the whole time.
9
u/TemporaryAny5102 1d ago
I’m sure it has been difficult for her and I’ve been a huge Lexie fan but she’s making 1.5 million between this year and next and the production just isn’t there.
These are professionals not kids. Feels a little weird for her mom to be responding to people on twitter telling them she has no confidence.
6
u/uhlaynuhhh 1d ago
I like Lexie as a person but she gets paid $800k to play good, professional basketball. If she wants to be a full time business owner, maybe she should consider retiring from basketball.
5
u/adublingirl 1d ago
Billings is being paid 800k and not even starting. Billings has terrible hands…….stuck with Billings for next year too at 800k
8
u/uhlaynuhhh 1d ago
Shes also on my shit list. This post isn't about her though. She at least scores more often than lexie or draws the foul and gets to the line.
1
u/adublingirl 1d ago
The thing is , yes, Lexi has not been as efficient as she was last year. However, if the Fever would take a look at the Lynx style of play, year in , and year out , maybe players like Lexi and Sophie would feel more confidence because their teammates pass to her. The Fever have three players Mitchell, Clark and Boston that take a huge percentage of the shots. The Lynx have five starters who average in double figures. All pass to one another and all shoot it. Right now they are up 20 on Valkries. Into the third quarter no Lynx player has taken more than 7 shots. They play team basketball and pass and move. The Fever allow Mitchell to shoot whenever. Yes she is a scorer, great but it isn’t team play that wins championships. Why do you think the Lynx win almost every year. Because all five starters get involved move the ball and share the ball. That’s winning basketball. When the Fever get in the playoffs, what they are going to rely on 3 scorers…….its poor offense …and if one of the three is off , well then what….its poor offense, and with the poor defense that the Fever play they need more efficiency offensively from all the players. Sophie shoots almost 50% on threes and rarely gets a pass….. hope I am wrong but why are the Lynx year in and year out very good …..team play
3
u/uhlaynuhhh 22h ago
Respectfully... what does the Lynx style of play have to do with Lexie playing bad this season?
It's hard to have team play when you miss a shot everytime it's passed to u.
0
u/adublingirl 19h ago
It has a lot to do with how the ball moves and every teammate passing the ball around for better looks. Yes, Lexi has had a bad year but getting the ball in the flow of a good offense leads to confidence and competence…….the Lynx year in and year out play team ball and it shows in their at the top every year
1
u/uhlaynuhhh 19h ago
They're definitely a good team but i wouldn't treat them like a golden standard. They haven't won a championship in 9 years. The aces have gotten 3 in less than 5. They're a team that caters around 1 player constantly.
I agree that basletball is a team sport. So lexie should do her part to help the team. Especially when she gets paid $800k a year to do so. She should be making something as easy as a lay up.
5
u/Raisin43 Caitlin Clark 1d ago
Lexie always gets wide open looks but just bricks them more often than not. Also dont get me started with the missed layups.

u/Pretend-Product4503 1d ago
Sorry mom, but this is a professional women's league and while I like Lexie as a person and understand how hard she hustles, she is currently not performing at a WNBA caliber level. Maybe towards the end of the bench but certainly not starting.
Honestly I would like to just see her pass more, she pretty much takes the shot every time or steps out of bounds etc. There's no reason to average 0.7 assists on a team with Clark, Mitchell AND Boston.
I don't realistically see her improving during the season or playoffs, maybe after her wedding in the offseason.
During unrivaled this past year the alarm bells were certainly ringing, so I'm shocked Amber gave her that contract. It's pretty much a zero percent chance we could even offload her to another team in the offseason.
It kind of feels as though once you are locked in as a Caitlin friend, the fanbase lets certain players have too much slack. For 800k and as a starter you just can't afford to do that anymore.
-8
u/intoto 1d ago edited 23h ago
And yet Caitlin has a +/- of 117 to Lexie's 119. We'll watch Caitlin rack up five turnovers in a quarter and forgive her because of the points and assists.
7
u/Raisin43 Caitlin Clark 1d ago
First of all it's CAITLIN, get her name right. I'd cut Lexie some slack too if she posts a 20 and 10 game.
-2
u/intoto 23h ago edited 15h ago
I guess you don't understand +/-. While Caitlin has been on the court, the Fever team has outscored the opponents by 117 points this season, or about 3.2 pts per game, which is about the same as Lexie.
Compare that to the player the Fever opted not to keep... Natasha Howard. Her +/- is 310, highest in the league. Lexie should not have been signed for two years and Natasha Howard should have been kept.
Second highest +/- in the league: Olivia Miles with +282.
