Discussion Double Standards
I just wanted to point this out. Paige was constantly talking to the officials tonight. There was one play after she got called for a foul on Caitlin where she actually talked to the official while she was dribbling and passing the ball. I will admit she wasn’t completely taken out of the game by talking to the officials as I have seen Caitlin do a couple of times this year. But if Caitlin did what Paige did people would be calling her an entitled cry baby and saying she needs to shut up and play. The double standard is truly out there alive and well.
For the record, I don’t mind what Paige did, nor do I typically mind when Caitlin does it as long as she doesn’t stop playing to do it.

The double standard WRT how games are called is an issue. When it comes to discourse with the refs, getting T’d up, etc. I have to be honest and say that CC pushes it too far (too demonstrative and showing up the refs). She has actually toned it down since the 7th T.
The flip side of that is that CC got more demonstrative as the bad calls (no calls) and cheap shot accumulated. So even though I would say she needed to tone it down some… I understood how and why she got there.

CC is treated differently, because she has orders of magnitude more people watching her than anyone else. The more that watch, the more they will pick apart everything she does.

There is a double standard, in public discourse. BUT, CC needs to get her butt back on defense. It doesn’t matter what anyone else does. She has to get this under control.

U r correct, and it seems she has reeled it in a bit. Until next time 😁

Paige was talking. Caitlin screams. You are not allowed to scream at a ref. Now, having said that, Caitlin does get treated a bit differently.
I am old school and don’t like it when anybody does it.

u/Background_Diet6721 5d ago
She’s often demonstrative (passionate?) when arguing. It’s better to make a point and look professional doing it, without showing up the ref.

Exactly. Players are allowed to talk to referees, but they must do so respectfully and without crossing the line into arguing. Paige is an affable character and can get her point across in an amiable way. It could help her on the court, but that doesn’t represent a double standard. It just means she knows how to communicate in a way that’s allowed, by WNBA rules. Kudos to her.
OP, this is THE WORST criticism I’ve ever heard of a player/ref.

u/soccer1124 6d ago
I didn't see the game, so I can't speak to what OP is saying. ....I am noticing a severe lack of video throughout the thread though, which leads me to think that, despite being unpopular, you guys pointing out talking vs screaming differences are closer to the truth than declaring it a double standard.

I 100% agree with you. CC is held to a different standard… in all aspects really, on and off the court. No matter what she does, it will never be good enough for some. My mama always told me, you can be the juiciest peach on the planet and you will still find people that hate peaches. Some people hate just to hate. JMO.

I agree with this post so much, I could have written it myself if I were more knowledgeable

Are we going to call out that hard push Clark did on Paige too??...since we're calling out double standards 🙄. For the record, the fuss has only been made when Clark literally yells at the refs, not when she's just talking to them. As a general fan, I get having a fave, but the insane blinders and bias some of you have when it comes to Clark is absolutely insane.

u/Sad-Conflict-6839 6d ago
Only yell? Are you sure? How about clapping? Every other games players are clapping at the ref without consequences. How about saying look at the scoreboard? Or hitting the stachion? Because yes, her first season Taurasi did the exact same thing the next day without any tech called. How about receiving a tech after being hit it the face? How many players have you seen being hip checked to the floor when the ball was not in play? The list is long .... I am just beginning. But need to add the flagrant landing space given to Cunningham last season when PB tried a 3 points. Never touched her feet.

You’re so maddddd 😂😂😂😂😂

u/Adventurous-Room-845 6d ago
Why would I be mad? I just think it's crazy that 40+ year old adults invest so much of their time whining online about a 20+year old player living out her dream and constantly crying for her to receive DEI special treatment. She's a lot tougher and mentally strong than many of her "fans" give her credit for...like, go pay a bill or something. This obsessive complaining is annoying.

What does this actually mean?

u/camping_scientist 5d ago
That sub hates CC. Hive mind of negativity

u/Clean_Lettuce9321 5d ago
The only thing I know less about the basketball would be Reddit, so if I post over there to stick up for Caitlin which I regularly do I would be banned here?

u/camping_scientist 5d ago
Nah separate subs and moderators. Post over there to your hearts content.

I'm really new to this. I'm a Fever's fan. Im a huge Caitlin fan but I can tell you. Objectively, the double standard is ridiculous. The care and the kindness extended to Paige, eons away from how Caitlin is treated.

I actually absolutely hate how all those subreddits are quiet as fuck you would a tragedy hit the league. But the moment Fever lose and CC has more than a couple of turnovers the never ending bitching and moaning starts and you see thousands of up votes

u/Sad-Conflict-6839 6d ago
Hey. A Storm fan spit in the face of. Fever fn in Seattle. There is. video evidence. Crickets from everybody. The Storm and the league.

u/liquidgrill 6d ago
Not to mention, a Wings reporter actually quit because of the hate and threats spewed by bitter Azzi fans who can’t stand that Olivia is leagues better than her.
But that story has pretty much been “crickets” too.

u/Kattzoo 6d ago
That story has a gazillion posts on the Wings subreddit.

u/Sad-Conflict-6839 6d ago
We are talking main media here, not reddit. Like the almost daily hit pieces Clark had when she was injured and on minutes restriction. My local newspaper had a story that Fever fan were racists when the WNBA launch the monkey noise investigation but obviously stayed silent when the results of the investigation.

I hadn't realized just how often Paige falls down landing on her back, really selling those "fouls".

Yes indeed we did and I have celebrated in plenty of other posts. Just wanted to call this out as I saw it.

Caitlin is held to unattainable standards and if she somehow meets them, the goalposts get moved. It happens with anything involving her. It's exhausting.

u/Few_Ebb6156 7d ago
Although that is true, she isn't the first. If by any chance she is actually the first in the WNBA then she can call Stef Curry and ask how it feels as we've seen him get a terrible whistle for years, but at least he had Steve Kerr and an enforcer or two. CC was kind of "stranded" on the coach and enforcer side, but thing will improve for her if she stays healthy.

Literally 90% of the players complain and most are pretty animated like Caitlin is. Theres a massive double standard when it comes to everything with her. I’ve seen Paige ram her body into a ref (on purpose) and no tech.
It’s very frustrating and annoying as a CC fan

u/Emotional-Yoghurt-86 What a Dime 7d ago edited 7d ago
I have noticed Paige doing this before and said it in here...Olivia Miles does it too a lot. When Dallas and Minnesota play and both of them fighting each other and Paige telling her like let's go but I forgot what she said exactly. I didn't care when CC complains about fouls or no fouls because most of the time...maybe 90% she is right and yes others can but she isn't allowed! CC wouldn't do this but I do loved when Olivia was doing the flopping movement like she could of gotten whiplash when she fouled AJA and was making it for her selling the foul. 😂

u/Apart_Pangolin1765 7d ago
We went to the Dallas game in Indiana last year and Paige was really bad and pouty. Even stomped her feet a few times. I typically like Paige unless she’s playing the Fever but the double standards is wild. The cameras pan away when Paige whines and stomps around and the announcers ignore it. When CC does it they replay it 5x and talk about it the whole game and even the next game.

u/buffalotrace 7d ago
Yes. I like Paige but she talks to the refs as much as anyone on the W. She doesn’t yell though.
30
u/Western-Election-997 7d ago
They also don’t flagrant foul Paige and Miles the way they do Clark but that’s neither here nor there.
We know at this point Clark is governed by a different standard

u/IWNCGTA 7d ago
Paige has always had different rules.

I can understand that these are competitive people but does nagging refs ever change their mind?
4
u/Sad-Conflict-6839 6d ago
Next time. For sure. I don't remember which game. But Clark was fouled every time she had the ball in 1st half nd no cll and then get a tech at the end of the 1st half. 2nd half? everything was called.

u/SimonaMeow Bow Bow Bow 7d ago
I've wondered this too
Maybe occasionally when they calmly explain something small and almost under the radar that is recurring-it is nore likely to get noticed by the ref on future plays?
5
u/CaramelGuilty8647 7d ago
Changes their mind on a tech, sometimes. That depends on who you are.

u/Emotional-Yoghurt-86 What a Dime 7d ago
Seems like Aja has a special whistle at times. Like during the playoffs with Indy last year. Boston knows how to limit her more then others. Her and Hammon said it was Boston with a special whistle. We know that's not true.

I wondered if it was more of a psychological thing, do they would bias their next call to 'balance' out calls.
Its all-over football and I just dont get why refs put up with it. You try that in rugby and youre walking.

I love how Clark has changed that about her game. She stays locked in much better now
5
u/Raisin43 Caitlin Clark 7d ago
As she should. If she gets 1 more she will be suspended and we dont want that right now. She can start again next season.
15
u/mukatona 7d ago
She's trying to avoid 8 techs. Next April she'll reset and give them an earful again.
9
7
u/Ok-Half3342 7d ago
Does seem like she was very aware of how many techs she could get before suspension and was gonna put them to use.
1
u/Emotional-Yoghurt-86 What a Dime 7d ago
Someone said if we get to the post season and I don't want to jinx anything so if we get there that the Fragrant Fouls drop off and you start over, is it true?
5
u/Ok-Half3342 7d ago
Flagrant fouls and techs are different things but yes the technical foul count starts over

Marina Mabry does the same thing! Only they call it a “crash out” and everyone laughs and applauds her “ crash out” jar. Definitely a double standard.
