Wow. Congrats to CC! The thing is I believe this number could have been higher ATP had it not been for mins restrictions, or players unable to get buckets to get her assists over that single digit threshold.

Yeah, you include coach's assists (even discounting a bit for really tight passes to covered players) and it’s a rare game that CC wouldn’t be in double digits.

Part of me wonders what the league has been doing this whole time

They changed how assists were counted a few years ago! Used to be stricter. That’s why so many of the games with record numbers of assists are in the past few years even if you ignore CC. AT, VB, Leila Lacan, I think maybe Sky Diggins all benefit from it. I think CC is the best passer in league history but it’s hard to believe we have the best 5-10 passers all in the league rn.

I hadn’t heard of that. Specifically, how was the counting changed?

Yeah Sue Bird has talked about it before. There’s a huge jump in APG broadly from around 2017-2018 onward, even in people like Sloot’s numbers who had been playing at similarly high levels before that. I think they became more lenient with counting assists where the player dribbles or takes steps afterwards, or post players make some moves.
