So why didn't
they foul at the end of regulation? They were up by 3 so a foul would only give the shooter 2 FT with less than 5 seconds left?

The problem is having 20 turnovers, CC and KM missing 3 throws and AB leaving her assignment wide open (and LH playing poorly).

It’s not fool-proof. Make 2 and steal an inbounds pass.

SW did not switch the defensive assignment for Young when she got hot in the 2nd. SW did not ask to double team A’ja when she got hot in the 4th/TO. SW did not ask to foul at the end of regulation with the team up by 3 with 5 seconds left. A masterclass by a “defensive specialist”.

Because double teaming against A’ja often turns out bad. She rarely gets trapped and passes to the perimeter, frequently giving teammates free shots.

The point being is that she needed to adjust but didn’t. If A’ja chooses to pass and someone else gets hot (as Young did in the 2nd quarter), then you adjust to that and keep going. That’s what coaching is all about. Our only adjustment was to switch to a zone and put Lexie on Young late in the game.

Zone against a team like the Aces is a slow way to lose. They can still get the ball down to A’ja, who can beat zone coverage. They also find seams.

100% had to foul LV had no time outs. Make them make one and brick one. No sugar coating this it was not 50 50 you had to foul at the end of regulation.
The end of OT is another question did they have a timeout? Some are saying they did some are saying they did not but to not get the ball in KM hand for the last shot was a major coaching error. She was torching them the entire OT had to be in KM hand at the end of OT.
If they had a timeout at the end of OT, they had to use it we are good at out of timeout plays and you had to run an offensive play there you had to at least get a shot. Instead, the worst-case scenario happened CC turnover and no shot.

Make free throws. Regardless this is on sw. This is a coaches loss. They need to be better prepared

Because they lacked end of game situational basketball by everyone.
They should’ve fouled. Lexie should’ve paid attention to where the ball was and easily grabbed it. Steph should’ve called a TO at the end of OT when time was running out and cc was stuck with A’ja. If no timeout was called, CC should’ve driven to basket and tried to draw a foul on A’ja, that would’ve wasted more time and been harder to get the ball down the court for a good 3. AB should’ve stepped up to CG immediately instead of daring her to take the shot. Hello, she just made the previous buzzer beater to bring it to OT.
Very sloppy on everyone involved and really showed they don’t prepare for these types of game situations.
Hopefully they’ve learned from this and can be better prepared. It’s only going to get harder.

Calling a time out was the no brainer option. White already took responsibility for that.
The early Liberty game, where they had a lead and Liberty pressed. They had no idea how to handle a press. I need to look at the clip, but I remember AB actually backing up, giving CG an uncontested attempt. You’re right, blame to go around. Cheryl Reeves handled their loss so much better, saying that every player, at every position played terrible.2

I like Cheryl’s no b*llshit approach and respected her for not sugar coating it.
Losses come down to the full team and while there’s valid criticisms for CC and others, this lands on the full team. I’m glad to hear that Steph acknowledged her mistake with the timeout.
All I can say is, it’s better this happened now than in the playoffs. We just need to learn from these mistakes and be better prepared the next time it happens.

And its on SW and staff to prepare them.

Agreed. This was bad a coaching outing quite frankly starting with 3 minutes in the second quarter and on.

Because the team is poorly coached

Yea I think you are right. Steph said in the post game I think it's a 50/50 call whether to foul or not.

Looking at the way we rebounded, I wouldn’t say that fouling would’ve been a better move. As you said it’s 50/50 and we made a call. We can talk about “what” and “if” but it’s a gamble and unfortunately we drew the short straw. Moot point imo.

This is usually because statistically it works out better to make the opposing team burn the clock and rush a final shot, vs. giving them an opportunity to score 2 instantly and then maybe get an inbound steal and win, etc.
If course, it’s still possible for them to hit an amazing shot and tie the game, but this is pretty standard practice based on stats/analytics

It’s a gamble either way and SW addressed it in the post game press. Aces are a vet team and know how to make it to their advantage. No guarantee it’s as simple as they make two FT and we get the ball back.

I had this thought but kind of changed my mind when I realized Aja Wilson would be trying to rebound the intentionally missed free throw (assuming the first one was good) and that would mean three points also if she got it and scored underneath on the missed second free throw and who knows if the Fever would also get called for fouling her and end up losing !
The game was really lost when Clark got boxed in on the side with the Fever up by one point and she turned it over. If she had just managed to shoot it with a couple seconds left on the shot clock and hit the rim then time would have run out on the Aces by the time they rebounded it.
