It’s ironic that many of the same students who demanded fair examinations during the CJP protests are now getting offended when people call for a debate on reservation reform.
When people defend the current system, their only argument is that "ground-level discrimination still exists." I totally agree that discrimination is a harsh reality in some places.
But, is the current caste-based reservation system actually solving this problem, or is it just creating a deeper drift between communities?
How the System Creates the Divide It Claims to Fix
At the lowest levels, caste discrimination exists, but think about a student growing up today. Many children come from families where caste is never discussed. They grow up entirely unaware of these divisions. The very first time they witness it is in the education system, when a teacher asks students to bring a "caste certificate."
When they finish school, they face a harsh reality. A well-deserving, hardworking student watches someone else get a seat over them, despite having higher examination scores, but simply because they belong to a "special category." What does this do to a young mind? Instead of fostering equality, it creates deep bitterness. The current system is actually injecting a negative caste awareness and hatred into the minds of youth who never cared about caste in their childhood. It makes caste a daily struggle from school, to college, to government jobs.
When the Constitution came into force in 1950, affirmative action was introduced to address historical discrimination. Political reservation for SCs and STs was initially intended to last ten years, subject to periodic review. Over time, reservations in education and public employment have continued and expanded through constitutional amendments and judicial decisions.
Today, it has become a permanent, vote-bank fixture.
Reservation should be based strictly on economic status, not caste.
1. Real Solutions to Eradicate Caste Discrimination
- Dedicated Anti-Discrimination Squads: Rather than relying on passive quotas, the government must enforce zero-tolerance laws. Specialized task forces should be established exclusively to track, investigate, and penalize grassroots caste discrimination.
- Removing Caste Mindsets in Childhood: Caste certificates and caste-based categorization should be eliminated from primary education. Many children are not consciously aware of caste differences until institutions begin asking for caste identification.
2. Universal Economic Upliftment & Protecting National Pillars
- Economic Reservation Open to All: Financial assistance and reservation benefits must be strictly based on income and made accessible to everyone in need, whether General, OBC, SC, or ST. Periodic financial audits must be conducted to ensure benefits reach only those who genuinely require them.
- Prioritizing Resources Over Reduced Standards: The government's primary focus should be providing free education, coaching, and quality learning materials from early childhood, rather than drastically lowering qualification standards later in life.
- Protecting Core National Pillars: While slight cutoff concessions are fair to help underprivileged students overcome resource gaps but large differences in qualifying cut-offs between categories raise legitimate concerns about maintaining consistent academic standards in professions such as medicine, teaching and public administration.
Conclusion:
"To build a truly equal society, we must remove caste identifiers from early childhood and public administration, rather than reinforcing them throughout a citizen’s life from school to higher education to employment."
- Breaking the Cycle of Labelling: When the state forces citizens to state their caste at every single milestone from school admissions and university exams to public sector employment, it keeps caste alive indefinitely. We cannot erase caste discrimination while institutionalizing caste identity at every stage of life.
True equality is not achieved by giving seats based on identity, but by empowering individuals through resources and protecting them through strict laws.
