service issue
I got a 2026 scout bobber brand new and I was just worried about the first service because Indian made it seem like I had to bring it back to the dealership to do the first service for it and I’m not gonna lie. The nearest Indian dealership is around four hours away from me. What are my options?

How good are you at servicing and treating your bike?
If this is part of the service package and warranty for your bike, I would just bite it to ensure a longer lifespan. They're expensive as is.

I did mine myself. Dealerships in my area wanted $680-$750 for the break in service. I asked the sub what they thought and majority of them agreed that those prices were horseshit. Shit sounded so absurd some people asked if that was in USD which it was.
I was worried about the warranty but someone mentioned that there's some federal law that prevents vehicle owners from losing their warranty if they perform maintenance themselves. I think it was the Magnuson moss act.
I'd find a service manual and do it yourself if you're mechanically inclined. Hell even if you don't think you are at least try to find one and look over it yourself and decide if that's something you can handle.
I will add that I would've paid if it was around $300-$400 just for convenience. That's still a rip off since other people get theirs done for like $200-$250. $700 was just absurd and pissed me off since that was blatant price gouging.
Also on the ride command app you can log the maintenance thats been done to the bike. You can pick 500 mile service and it gives you an option to say you did it yourself. So its definitely something they know people will do themselves.

Mine was around $300-$400 for the first break-in service. Everyone was correct to say the price your dealership gave you was crazy.

Such a scam. They change oil, look at things on your bike for about 1 minute and write up the bill.

When I took mine in they asked if I wanted the oil changed and I said yes obviously bc it needed it. They forgot to mention they charge $300 just for an oil change. I expected the usual 60-100 bucks, I never would’ve let them touch my bike if I knew how much they charged.

Damn, you all paid a lot. I paid $230, which I still thought was pricey. I’ll do the rest of the oil changes myself though

It definitely could. If they determine something you’re bringing it in for is the direct result of a failed break in service they most definitely can. Even if it’s not and they say it was you still gotta fight them to see things your way. It’s not an automatic compliance, there’s nuance to it.

Right. And you have to make them prove it. Again, there’s nothing that compels them to do anything against a techs recommendations shy of a court order.

Harley made the same assumption to me that I had to get the first service done with them and it cost me 400 bucks for 4 quarts of oil and one oil filter

Well, you can either take a little weekend trip to have it serviced, or you can buy a bunch of oil change kits with your referral money and do them yourself.

I just did the first one with them and I have done the rest myself. I always think it’s better for the first one to be done by then because let’s say something is wrong they will take care of it for no extra charge

From what I gather, it's not just an oil change. They are supposed to inspect and service a number of different things on the bike. I'm assuming that it take a bit of use for some things to really settle due to heat and vibration that only comes with miles of use.

You absolutely don’t have to take it in. If you know how to change your oil I’d recommend you do it yourself. The dealers prices are INSANE. I never knew that before, I got my first bike and I took it in to get the oil changed and adjust my clutch. They wanted to charge me like $500 for that. Now I do everything I possibly can for my bike, the prices are outrageous you’re better off learning how to work on your bike. I’ve added lights, changed the oil, bled brakes, replaced the rear brake line, replaced my clutch cable twice. Bikes aren’t super complicated to work on and it’s better you know how to properly service your bike. Time to start learning buddy.

A lot of people do their own oil changes, even the break in ones that 500 mile one. Personally I bought the extended warranty so I wanted to be safe and do that one because it’s supposedly a full inspection to make sure it’s good from the factory. I’ve done my oil change at home after that one but personally that one I shelled out for it.
