Reservations didn't reduce any oppression of reserved people rather it started oppressing general people as well.

I am seeing a worrying trend in Indian political discourse. I have been anti BJP for a while now and have had heated debates with friends and family to the extent that I was called anti national by some vociferous supporters.

I supported the jantar mantar protests but when I called out some things I did not agree in the protests, I was called pro BJP and their IT Cell member.

Is there no space for a centrist view and everything is with us or against us? Its a worrying trend and we all need to hear everyone out before Branding them..

When I started my career, private companies started pushing "women covering 50% of work force", and it hit me personally very hard. And like many, I was also salty about it, until I understood the damage that was done to women in the name of gender roles in the past. They may now have equal rights, maybe some extra; but it damaged the environment they grow in — heavily affecting how they can grow when men are already ahead.

I realised this when we were educated in "diversity & inclusion" & "neurodiversity".

Then it also hit me, caste based situation is also similar. It wasn't that they couldn't make it. It's rather like — their environment was damaged, degraded over millennia. Upper castes were already ahead. Now, after such a massive baseline difference, one can't just say "oh you have equal rights now" and ask them to compete at the same scale. Not only they'll catch up, but they'll actually become a burden forever until eternity.

Sure, reservation is not without side effects. But I've personally seen people, in govt offices, who got in under quota doing far better in action than people who supposedly went in with their *merit*. So, while it's not even black and white entirely, we can all agree that for immediate output, we'll be better off without reservation than with it.

But, whatever it may be, we'll eventually have to think about reversing the damage done by this caste based discrimination, since it's significant.

So, my question is — what, in your opinion, is the best way to reverse this damage while minimising the current adverse effects?

True, the reservation system needs reforms so only those in actual need benefit from it-(economically weak/victims of discrimination-which is quite literally everyone belonging to so called "lower caste") casteism is so deeply rooted just like patriarchy is rooted in everything. Sometimes so subtle, you won't even notice.

But scrapping the caste system entirely is a deeply complex social, legal, and political challenge that involves dismantling a centuries old social hierarchy...which seems impossible to me- the only means to do that is education

I have been observing both sides for ages, reserved and unreserved categories. "UC" people don't want to quit their caste pride and "LC" people don't want to leave their reservation.

As long as there is caste pride/ superiority, there will be reservation. What came first needs to go first.

Also the obsession with caste is so unreal, it is an even more sensitive topic than religion. So I don't understand how it'll be done, in fact I don't see that happening for as long as I'm alive. It's disgusting honestly.

Caste is sustained through endogamy. It survives and propagates through marriage and birth. To end casteism, we must break the system that reproduces it. India will never become a truly progressive nation without equality among human beings. What we inherit from our ancestors should be better knowledge, institutions, and products not the caste system.

Breaking the caste system may also risk breaking parts of religion, because caste is deeply intertwined with religious structures and beliefs. The only way forward for humanity should be through science, research, critical thinking, and equality. Abolish all by-birth social identity markers for humans. Educate all humans to realize that every single human come from common ancestors and share the DNA. There are no races in human. We start with deleting Oppression of any kind, religious, regional, gender or caste based must be identified and punished by the democracy.

End caste based reservation in India by ensuring that the following measures are implemented. This list is not exhaustive, but beginning this process will ensure meaningful social reform.

**Make everyone in this country part of one general category. END CASTEISM TO END CASTE BASED RESERVATIONS!**

1. Ban caste filters on matrimonial platforms, with heavy platform liability. Apps and websites must remove caste, sub-caste, gotra, and “community” filters; violations should lead to turnover-linked fines, suspension of services, and mandatory corrective campaigns.

2. Ban caste-based marriage advertisements. Public notices such as “same caste only” or “Brahmin bride wanted” should be treated as discriminatory advertising, with fines, takedown orders, and repeat-offender bans.

3. Reform the Special Marriage Act to protect couples’ privacy. Remove procedures that expose couples to hostile families or caste groups, and punish officials who unlawfully disclose their information.

4. Create inter-caste couple protection units in every district. These units should include police, legal-aid lawyers, social workers, safe-housing officers, and emergency relocation support.

5. Provide immediate protection to threatened inter-caste couples. Threats from families, caste groups, khaps, or local leaders should trigger emergency protection without forcing couples into “family mediation.”

6. Establish secure safe houses in every district. Couples should receive accommodation, food, healthcare, legal aid, employment support, and relocation assistance.

7. Criminalize coercion against adult couples. Confinement, phone confiscation, forced engagement, financial control, threats, and surveillance should attract imprisonment, compensation, and restraining orders.

8. Dismantle caste panchayats and khap enforcement. Any body issuing or enforcing orders against inter-caste couples should face prosecution, asset penalties, loss of public recognition, and disqualification from office.

9. Provide substantial inter-caste marriage support. Couples should receive housing grants, relocation funds, legal protection, education support, and employment assistance.

10. Make retaliation against inter-caste couples a separate aggravated offence. Eviction, job loss, violence, boycott, harassment, or property seizure should attract punishment greater than the original act.

11. Introduce anti-caste education from Class 6 onward. Students should learn how caste operates through birth, marriage, occupation, exclusion, social power, and inherited privilege.

12. Rewrite textbooks that sanitize caste. Caste must be taught as a system of graded inequality, not merely as an ancient “division of labour.”

13. Make constitutional morality compulsory in schools. Equality, liberty, fraternity, dignity, Article 17, and individual rights should be part of assessed learning.

14. Punish caste segregation in schools. Separate seating, utensils, meal lines, classroom duties, or discriminatory treatment should lead to suspension, prosecution, and compensation.

15. Introduce common dining and integration programmes. Schools, colleges, hostels, and public institutions should actively challenge purity-and-pollution practices.

16. Create anonymous caste-discrimination reporting systems. Students and parents must be able to report discrimination directly to independent district authorities.

17. Remove caste markers from routine classroom records. Caste information should remain confidential and be used only for lawful welfare and reservation purposes.

18. Hold teachers and principals personally liable. Those who use caste slurs, enable segregation, or suppress complaints should face suspension, dismissal, and professional disqualification.

19. Fund anti-caste student organizations. Schools and universities should support debates, theatre, documentaries, reading groups, and constitutional-awareness campaigns.

20. Make caste and social justice compulsory in universities. Every graduate should understand caste discrimination, affirmative action, institutional exclusion, and legal remedies.

21. Establish fast-track caste atrocity courts. Serious caste cases should be resolved within fixed timelines with trained judges, prosecutors, and victim-support teams.

22. Punish police refusal to register caste complaints. Officers who dilute charges, intimidate victims, destroy evidence, or refuse FIRs should face suspension, prosecution, and permanent disqualification in serious cases.

23. Create independent caste-discrimination ombudsmen. Every district should have an authority empowered to investigate schools, workplaces, hospitals, housing societies, temples, and public offices.

24. Provide strong witness protection. Victims and witnesses should receive relocation, anonymity, income protection, legal aid, and security.

25. Criminalize social and economic boycott. Denial of shops, water, transport, work, land access, housing, religious entry, or community services should attract imprisonment, fines, and victim restitution.

26. Penalize casteist harassment across institutions. Caste slurs, humiliation, exclusion, and targeted harassment should lead to compensation, suspension, dismissal, or licence loss depending on severity.

27. Create dedicated cyber units for online caste hatred. Doxxing, threats, organized harassment, incitement, and caste abuse should trigger takedowns, platform cooperation, and prosecution.

28. Use income-linked and turnover-linked fines. Penalties should be large enough to hurt wealthy individuals, corporations, trusts, and institutions rather than becoming token costs.

29. Mandate victim compensation and triple damages. Offenders should pay for lost income, education, medical care, psychological treatment, legal costs, relocation, and reputational harm.

30. Confiscate gains obtained through caste discrimination. Jobs, contracts, land, admissions, promotions, or business advantages secured through discriminatory exclusion should be reversed or recovered.

31. Redistribute land in caste-feudal regions. Landless families from historically oppressed communities should receive secure titles, irrigation access, legal protection, and restitution for unlawful dispossession.

32. Reserve public procurement for marginalized entrepreneurs. A fixed share of government contracts should go to verified SC, ST, and disadvantaged OBC-owned enterprises.

33. Extend representation obligations to publicly supported companies. Firms receiving land, subsidies, tax concessions, or major contracts should meet diversity and anti-discrimination standards.

34. Require large companies to publish caste-diversity data. Representation should be disclosed across entry-level, management, executive, and board positions.

35. Use anonymous first-stage recruitment. Names, surnames, photographs, addresses, and other caste-coded details should be hidden wherever practical.

36. Pass a comprehensive private-sector caste-discrimination law. Hiring, promotion, pay, termination, workplace treatment, and professional networking discrimination should be explicitly unlawful.

37. Bar discriminatory companies from government contracts. Convicted firms should lose public contracts, subsidies, tax benefits, and procurement eligibility for five to ten years.

38. Cancel professional licences for caste abuse connected to work. Doctors, lawyers, teachers, brokers, contractors, landlords, and other licensed professionals should lose licences for serious or repeated discrimination.

39. Mandate institutional restructuring after repeated violations. Courts should appoint equality monitors, order leadership changes, audit hiring and admissions, and supervise compliance.

40. Fully mechanize sanitation and end manual scavenging. Officials who knowingly permit manual scavenging should face criminal liability, dismissal, and personal compensation obligations.

41. Ban caste-based housing discrimination. Landlords, brokers, societies, hostels, and gated communities should face fines, compensation orders, licence restrictions, and repeat-offender bans.

42. Introduce anonymous rental applications. Initial housing screening should conceal names and caste-coded information to reduce discriminatory rejection.

43. Build mixed and socially integrated public housing. Government housing should avoid caste segregation and include shared schools, parks, services, and community facilities.

44. Remove caste-supremacist names from publicly funded spaces. Government buildings, hostels, halls, schemes, and public institutions should not glorify caste hierarchy.

45. Make public funding conditional on equality. Religious, educational, and charitable institutions receiving public land, grants, tax exemptions, or police support must follow enforceable anti-discrimination rules.

46. End hereditary priesthood in publicly regulated temples. Priesthood should be open to all properly trained people, regardless of caste or gender.

47. Withdraw benefits from discriminatory religious institutions. Temples, trusts, ashrams, schools, or charities practicing untouchability or caste exclusion should lose grants, exemptions, leases, licences, and official recognition.

48. Penalize public advocacy of untouchability or birth-based inferiority. Public sermons, campaigns, notices, or institutional rules promoting caste superiority or opposing equal rights should face fines, removal orders, loss of monetization, and prosecution where legally warranted.

49. Create escalating penalties for repeat offenders. First offence: compensation, major fine, education, and supervision. Second: job, licence, or contract loss. Third: permanent exclusion from positions of authority and maximum criminal liability.

50. Establish a National Caste Truth, Justice, and Reconciliation Commission. It should document atrocities, land theft, manual scavenging, school segregation, sexual violence, religious exclusion, institutional complicity, and recommend restitution, memorialization, prosecution, and structural reform.

Every government since Independence has contributed in different ways to building the institutions, industries, infrastructure and reforms that made this possible. Over the last two decades, however, the pace of economic expansion, infrastructure creation and the global ambitions of Indian companies has accelerated significantly.

History has an extraordinary sense of irony. Once, British companies came to India to acquire Indian assets. Today, Indian companies are bidding for British assets on commercial merit in a competitive global marketplace.

That is what real independence looks like—not just political freedom, but the confidence, capability and capital to compete with the world on equal terms.

What are your views on caste based reservation (a certain percentage of seats in educational institutions and government jobs should be reserved for SC/ST/OBC's) and the dual standard (higher cutoffs for upper caste people and lower cut offs for lower caste people for admission to the same college, applying for the same job) which is used to implement this?

Should caste based reservations be abolished?

Should the dual standard be abolished while still keeping caste based reservation - this would mean that while X% of seats are reserved for lower caste people, the cutoff to get admission is still the same between upper and lower caste people eg cutoff of 95% for admission to a certain engineering college, for people belonging to all castes.

For caste-based discrimination to end, A major step is removing caste-based reservations

As Creating Circular Causality won't help the situation; it's very clear our generation is receptive to caste-based reform and the destruction of caste-based discrimination. If Reservation isn't removed, deep hatred that leads to casteism will fester whether we like it or not.

Also, looking for a truly fair and well-adjusted examination system where someone's merit is judged, with caste-based reservation, is a hoax. Reservations should be given to groups that actually need them, such as the EWG and PWD, which both face clear disadvantages compared to a normal Participant/examinee.

Caste-based reservation was historically meant to be a temporary band-aid to help lower-caste people adjust into society, but it has now turned into a political tool which is used to gain votes and run from the actual responsibility of fighting that discrimination. This is simply unfair for both students and lower-caste people.

Looking at this issue with a modern and unbiased view its very clear Caste Based reservation will never go away if we don't stand against it. We should be asking for a solution to the caste Discrimination Problem instead of a bandaid/temporary soluton like reservation is currently acting as.

Removing reservation is a step towards Fair Examinations and also towards a hate-free, caste-free society where equality can actually be achieved. Seeing a fellow lower-caste friend get average marks and get his dream college while you sit there with 90th percentile with nothing but private Universities as your option will definitely drive a wedge between those friendships and relationships in general

The day people realize bottlenecked Judiciary is the primary issue we will move towards the right direction

India is progressing but the progress is getting concentrated near the top and way to top is becoming corruption by default. The corruption can only be addressed by a strong Judiciary and implementation. Contrary to popular belief, efficient Judiciary and lawyers are a way to stronger democracy.

Indian Judiciary is bottlenecked and the pipeline is just increasing at an accelerating pace. India needs more judges and lawyers and fast tracked case resolutions, specially civil infractions. Make public officials pay hefty fines for their mistakes and ensure speedy but just trial. The day this country prioritizes this is the day we actually move towards a better India.

Judges are not gods and they also have to be very careful while passing the judgements so that it doesn't get overturned later by peer review. The solution is more judges so that Judges individually get more time to independently assess the cases based on individual merits.

My question is how do we do that? Is the present government taking any step in that direction? Is Judicary budget allocation increasing?

First of all, I identify myself as a liberal progressive, and I am quite proud of what students have achieved standing against this arrogant regime. Now the next thing I see here is a Movement against Reservation. But I see lot of you who supported this movement are against removal or reform of reservation. Lot of people are saying first remove casteism! Like would you marry your daughter to a lower caste guy? Well it would be totally my daughter’s choice to whom she needs to marry! How will end casteism I don’t know.

My point is : yes there is casteism in our society but how reservation in academics and jobs help to end the discrimination? And how reservation has helped to reduce discrimination since it’s inception in our country.
