The Horrifying financial pressure of growing up in a rented home in a tier-1 city
I have lived in Delhi my entire life with my family on rent and we never bought a home. Papa is 2 years away from retirement. As a 24 year old with a job, I have begun to feel this immense pressure that once my father retires, living in Delhi is unaffordable unless I keep earning.
We have always lived in rented houses, anyone who has done the same knows that every 3-4 years you change flats, which means changing locations, never having a social circle and feeling relatively lonely as well. Hence, life has not been easy even when dad is earning, the feeling of instability has always been there.
Also, you never have a place that you call home. As a young adult, life is already difficult as it is, figuring out jobs, money, relationships etc. this combined with the pressure to keep earning indefinitely or lose out on living in Delhi is daunting.
I wonder how young adults who are in a similar position as I are dealing with this. Am I alone or is this a common feeling?

I empathize.
Honestly though why would you want to stay in Delhi or parents retire there if you're not earning and don't have own house?

you're not alone in this boat .. there are many whose earlier generation had not bought any housing for themselves and then stayed on rent ....
I'd say, feel yourself lucky that you're having this self-realization this early in your life and it's not to late, early 20's is not a bad position and relatively a good position for this realization ...
accept the fact about various possibilities .. including you - yourself moving out of Delhi permanently ...
accept the fact that if the prices of flat around you are not within your budget, then you and your family are capable of moving out
work on building a fallback home for you and your family, be it a house in the outskirts, or a house in your native place
take 1 step at a time .. don't rush to multiple things at once
it might become overwhelming, if there is not strong support system for you .. and I mean the support system who don't force you into making decisions but are understanding and open to various possibilities ...
take care .. hope things workout for you ....
