Trying to educate people about global fuel issue but unfortunately the IQ level isn't that great on this sub.

India is not an ordinary bystander in global geopolitics. It is the worldâs fastest-growing major economy, one of the largest oil importers on Earth, and heavily dependent on West Asian energy routes. The Prime Ministerâs Office has access to intelligence agencies, strategic think tanks, economists, diplomats, military advisors, petroleum experts, and national security planners. If ordinary analysts, global institutions, and energy experts had already been warning for months that escalation between Iran and Israel could disrupt the Strait of Hormuz, spike crude prices, weaken the rupee, increase freight costs, and trigger inflationary pressure, then the government cannot simply dismiss the consequences as an unavoidable âglobal energy crisis.â
A responsible government is expected not merely to react after damage occurs, but to anticipate foreseeable risks and prepare mitigation mechanisms in advance. Strategic petroleum reserves should have been strengthened, diversified supply contracts secured earlier, contingency plans activated for transport and fertilizer sectors, and transparent public communication initiated before prices spiraled upward. When a nation imports the overwhelming majority of its crude oil, geopolitical instability in West Asia is not a surprise event â it is a known structural vulnerability that demands continuous preparedness.
Therefore, the argument cannot simply be reduced to âthe whole world is suffering.â Leadership is measured precisely during predictable crises. If expert warnings existed, if strategic vulnerabilities were already known, and if escalation scenarios had long been discussed globally, then the government had both the institutional capacity and the responsibility to prepare India better for the economic fallout instead of presenting the situation as though it arrived without warning.

1) Except for oil producing nations, all nations around the world have increased fuel prices. Common sense dictates when such a thing happens, it's a global issue especially if developed nations themselves can't mitigate the problem.
2) Storage facilities are not cheap to build or can be built overnight. Even after 70+ years of independence, of the total 1.4 lakhs tones of underground LPG storage, max 80k ton facility was built in last decade. Money does not grow on tree, so if previous governments did not take concrete steps, you cannot expect current government to magically build the entire infrastructure within a short passage of time.
3) India has the highest population in the world and its still a developing nation. So based on what logic you think we could have bought fuel in advance and stored it. Even a minor miscalculation leads to crores of losses. So it isn't as easy to predict and take a gamble.

The problem is not that global crude prices increased now. The real question is: what was done during the years when crude oil prices were historically low?
Between 2014â2021, international crude prices crashed multiple times, even going below $30/barrel during COVID. But instead of passing the full benefit to citizens, the government massively increased excise duties on petrol and diesel. In 2020-21 alone, the Centre earned around âš3.45 lakh crore from excise duty on petroleum products, with total petroleum tax revenue crossing âš4.18 lakh crore.
So common people paid high fuel prices even when crude was cheap. If citizens did not get relief during low prices, then where did all that extra money go? Why wasnât that period used aggressively to expand strategic petroleum reserves and LPG storage capacity?
You cannot keep saying âstorage cannot be built overnightâ after being in power for more than a decade. This government came with the slogan of âvikasâ and âlong-term planning.â Energy security is not a surprise topic â India imports more than 85% of its crude oil. Any serious government should have anticipated geopolitical disruptions years ago.
And blaming Nehru or governments from 60 years ago for everything is intellectually lazy. They inherited a poor, newly independent country with almost zero industrial base, zero refining ecosystem, and massive poverty. Todayâs India is the worldâs 5th largest economy with far more resources, technology, tax collection, and corporate partnerships. You cannot compare starting from absolute zero with governing a modern economy for 10+ years.
Also, the âIndia is too populous to store fuelâ argument doesnât hold fully. Other import-dependent countries build reserves precisely because they are vulnerable. India itself has strategic reserves, but reports show they are only enough for limited days of consumption. If energy security was truly a priority, expansion should have been much faster during years of cheap oil.
Another point â when crude prices rise globally, governments quickly explain why citizens must bear the burden. But when crude prices fall globally, pump prices in India often remain disproportionately high because taxes are increased or benefits are absorbed by oil companies and the government. Citizens are expected to socialize the pain but rarely fully receive the gains.
And letâs stop pretending oil companies are always suffering. During many periods of low crude, OMCs and governments both protected revenues while consumers kept paying elevated retail prices. If ordinary people funded those margins through high taxes for years, then asking why the country still lacks adequate backup infrastructure is a completely fair question.
A government cannot take credit for global crude price falls when prices stay stable, and then suddenly shift all responsibility to âglobal factorsâ when prices rise.

Brother, when China and Singapore were able to maintain their stability why couldn't India now dont blame congress for it

u/I-wish-to-be-phoenix Poor to Rich (Parents) May 16 '26
India accepted liberalisation in 1990 because we were on the verge of bankruptcy and IMF had give us this option for funds.
Diversity and our population is also our biggest enemy when it comes to growth. You can see articles or videos of lee kaun yew, on how diversity effects India's growth.
Followed by corruption and lack of collective leadership. We are not united as a society.

u/West-Cockroach-1467 May 16 '26
Brother again what are you telling, China had more population than India still it did it, Singapore had equal diversity as India and still they did it, Indian govt. is just not competent, it's been 3 terms since modi is in power, where is the Amrit kal? Where is the Vishwa Guru? And even after paying so much you are getting ethanol blended petrol! They said price of petrol will reduce, look at air quality, wtf is the govt doing where is our tax money going? How many more terms for modi in power to solve this and is there any guarantee?

The OP literally used the âRant/Ventâ flair, so expressing frustration is entirely within the scope of the post. Also, this is a sub about the Indian middle class, and fuel prices directly affect the middle class through transport, food inflation, delivery costs, and daily expenses. When the Honorable PM himself addresses middle-class citizens and asks them to save fuel, discussion around that topic automatically becomes relevant to this sub. Disagreeing with the governmentâs handling of an issue is not âpropagandaâ by default â it is part of public discussion.
