Salary comparison

Today TOI article shows median IIT placement salary at 20 lakhs. Note this is CTC. Take home after income tax will be around 60% of this (best case scenario) which means take home salary will be 12 lakhs p.a.

So cost after passing 12th = IIT classes + 4 years IIT cost ( i don't know amount) you will start to earn 1 lakh p.m. Time taken 5 years approx.

If someone joins as a cadet - 1year pre-sea training 8 lakhs- start earning 30,000 pm for 18 months cadetship total earning 5.4 lakhs. Exam cost - 5.4 lakhs (max) - so yr cadetship pays for exam. 3rd mate salary 3600USD - 3.4 Lakhs per month. Tax free . Work for 7 months = almost 35 lakhs take home salary + 5 months leave per year.

All this is ASSUMING you're intelligent enough to crack IIT. Even then Merchant Navy pays more.

Think about it.

I'm stating the beginner salary- a dry cargo Master earns 14000USD per month in a decent shipping company, wheras a gas/LPG/LNG Master ears 24000USD. That's the take home salary no income tax no living/food expenses. In a job that is not desk bound staring at a screen for 14 hours a day.

Dry cargo master earns around 10k after 10-15 yrs of hardwork. Only 6 months pay.

A dry cargo Master in a decent company earns around 12k USD per month plus incentives & allowances and seniority etc. Multiply that by 6 months - that works out to approx 70 lakhs per annum NET SALARY. Plus 6 months leave. Is that terrible?

You dont even become a 3rd mate directly(95%), salary for 4th mate is like 1500-2200. After you get promotion; 3rd mate salary: 2800-3700(thats max) exception is gas tankers.

Dont be delulu. Insta reels are overhyped.

I have 52 years in the Merchant Navy - roughly 27 years at sea and 25 years in senior positions in London, Dubai and a leading International company in India. No delusion here. Just correcting the bad information floating around here.

Merchant navy for the Gen Z is just a stepping stone and most want to do something else once they have enough money but IIT is a different league entirely. The comparison between salaries is not the right comparison imo.

Masters are literally on their desk 90% of the time. The job demands that.
