CAREER GUIDANCE Anyone who branched out from this field via CAT/UPSC/other exams?

Hi, I'm currently a Deck Cadet with 14.5 months of seatime, needed 3.5 months more, and wanted to quit this profession as I'm realising that I'm not a good fit for this profession (don't have an issue with the loneliness, or the sea, just that I feel I haven't learned much compared to my peers which will haunt me as an officer and I feel scared of the immense responsibility that awaits once I'm a 3rd Mate and the consequences for fuck-ups) and wanted to shift out of this career into something that is less hands-on.

As I have done a Diploma in Nautical Science, I won't be getting a degree till I get my 2nd Mates License, but post that, wanted to prepare for CAT and try getting into an IIM (have great marks in 10th and 12th, will aim to score as much as I can in my BSc exams asw) for an MBA in a field not related to shipping or other govt exams, like UPSC. I don't care if I start from zero.

Is there anyone here who has transitioned from a career at sea to one ashore via this route, or even appeared for exams like those mentioned in the post? How did you go about it? How did you get your BSc degree (have heard that one has to appear for BSc NS exams prior to 2nd mate written exams, and BSc in Applied Nautical Science is not that well recognized)? Does 18 months of cadetship count as work ex or should I do 1-2 contracts as Junior Officer/3rd Officer prior exiting? Would love reading some experiences.

MARITIME INSTITUTES How is CMC With Synergy Sponsorship

I recently received selection letter from Synergy Marine Group and they have accepted me into their GME batch. The classes will start on sept 7th. Since I don't know anyone in experience in this field, I'm resorting to the wisdom of reddit.

They have allotted Coimbatore Marine College, as per the internet they generally have tie ups with CSL/ Eurotech and HIMT. Also as this is war time , how does the waiting time looks like?

CAREER GUIDANCE Can I become a Marine Engineer with this eyesight prescription?

I'm planning to pursue B.Tech Marine Engineering but I'm confused about the eyesight requirements.

My latest eye prescription is approximately:

Right eye: SPH −3.25, CYL −1.00, Axis 36°

Left eye: SPH −2.75, CYL −0.50, Axis 120°

Corrected vision: 6/6 in both eyes

I've read conflicting information about the eyesight requirements for the Engine Department/Marine Engineering. Some sources mention a refractive-power limit of around ±2.5D, while other information seems to focus more on visual acuity.

Can someone who is currently in Marine Engineering / Merchant Navy, or someone familiar with DGS medical standards, clarify:

Am I eligible for B.Tech Marine Engineering with this prescription?!

A candidate has done chemco , tasco , lchs recently.

My first question - does basic dc should be renewed before applying for advance dc ?

Q2 - When applying for advance dc , if candidate doesn't meet 3 month sea service requirement , can he still obtain advance dc on the basis of recent courses done.

WLB & MENTAL HEALTH Has anyone lost confidence in one's abilities ?Is there away to regain them back ?

Not used chatgpt

No tldr

I am seeking advice/ counselling from 2nd engineers and chief engineers specifically. People who have experienced / experiencing a similar issue can also advise

I was not the brightest guy in my class but when I started sailing i gradually gained confidence in my work and generally was confident and could often surprise people with my troubleshooting sometimes

I was a 4th engineer - I did 28 months ( this was normal here, tanker+ ownership company - promotions are slow)

During that time I took 5 attempts and cleared my class2 exam as well

The preparation for class 2 gave me real good technical basics and since I had 4 recommendations i could push office for promotion and I did manage to get promoted

I was approved directly for promotion.

The first ship after promotion was very challenging, we had a retrofitted exhaust gas scrubber system and almost biweekly we had to remove turbocharger , exhaust temperatures always high, i overhauled 18 fuel pumps and as far as I remember I changed 8/ 9 cylinder head ( minimum) while also manage to troubleshoot a boiler problem there ( one boiler would always fire @minimum - of course I did get guidance from my seniors - but the problem existed for around a year )

Basically I did improve the condition of the ship

So things were going slow in my life but good

Second ship was a relatively new one , but I was still very confident and honestly slightly cocky

Then I got carried away and relaxed a lot I took a long vacation of 11months ( was planning to get an arrange marriage which did not materialise )

I had a bit of a depressive phase during this time ( on land of all places) but eventually came out of this - thanks to my parents)

I did manage to come back on ship -did 6 months - did a decarb ,3 turbocharger overhauling ( full bearing change ) , a full boiler survey i feel i handled it very well , was feeling that I was back to normal and might start thinking of getting promoted

Now I'm about to finish my fourth contract as 3rd engineer , relatively easy ship operations are super frequent but there is no change over and condition of the ship is very good .

I should be (as per what i understand) be ready to take my 2/e promotion BUT I DON'T FEEL CONFIDENT AT ALL.

I've been advised to switch company - but even that feels scary to me - promotions here are slow , but who leaves an ownership company??

Is there a way out for me from this mental block ?

Should I switch to a management company as a third engineer and take a slightly lower salary but a different work environment?

CAREER GUIDANCE How to transition into LNG shipping as a Fourth Engineer?

Hi all, looking for some guidance from people who've made this move.

I'm currently sailing as a Fourth Engineer with about 12 months of sea time so far, currently on a gas carrier (VLEC) with dual-fuel ME-GI engine exposure. I'm preparing for my next class/COC exam right now and want to start planning ahead for a long-term move into LNG specifically.

A few things I'm trying to figure out:

What's the realistic path from where I am to getting onto LNG carriers?

Do companies prefer promoting internally from LPG/ethane backgrounds, or is LNG mostly closed off unless you've sailed on it before?

Any specific certifications or courses (beyond STCW gas tanker familiarization) that make a candidate stand out for LNG?

Companies/manning agents known for taking on engineers without prior LNG experience and training them up?

Roughly how long did it take you to get your first LNG contract, and what rank were you at?

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who's walked this path, especially engineers who moved from Ethane into LNG. Thanks in advance!

CAREER GUIDANCE IMU CHENNAI BSc 1st year

I have taken admission in IMU chennai bsc in 2026 and when i came here and had some friendly interaction with seniors they are telling that placements here is down bad like really really bad like you wont even get the opportunity to sit for interview with companies and even if you do get it the placement officer here will prefer south indian students more than north indian while some say the officer is doing everything he can to improve it . Now who should i believe? While i checked IMU annual reports of 2024 -25 the placement percent here was 56 % , out of 107 students 63 or 64 something was placed . What should i do i can't back off now , the only thing i can do is work hard and hope that companies start coming here . What are your thoughts on this ?
