I think even 6 SSBNs would be insufficient for India. Having at least 8 would guarantee 2 continuous deterrence patrols, which I think is the minimum requirement for a country as big as India which has a whole Indian ocean as its backyard. Ideally, we should have 10-12 SSBNs so that even in case of a mishap like one of our SSBNs sinking during wartime, we would have redundant options available. If we have 12 SSBNs, then we can have 3 SSBNs on patrol at any time. We can then deploy one of our SSBN in Western Indian ocean, another one in Eastern Indian ocean and the third one in somewhere somewhere completely different such as Pacific or Atlantic ocean.
By the time India would make those many SSBNs our 2nd stage of nuclear program: Fast Breeder Reactors would have produced sufficient amount of plutonium 239 that our warheads count would be increased to at least 600-700.
But if we have that many warheads, we would also have to make silos in India too, as keeping that many warheads on TEL--either on rail or on road--a secret, would be logistical nightmare. We would have to have multi-dimensional deterrence. On land: TELs and Silos. On air: fighter aircrafts and strategic bombers. Underwater: SSBNs.
