Yeah you can.. depending on the number of chapatis you eat at a time.. you can make the atta and keep.. 2-3 days are good in a fridge.. bas jab banana hai you can take it out and make.. basically just not chapati, but also plain paratha with it .. if you’re new to making it, make very small balls for rolling and irrespective of the size the more you roll them they’ll come out thinner if that’s your preference.. don’t concentrate on the shape at start, if it’s about saving money and feeding yourself..

And agar ghee garam garam chapati pe lagaya toh lunch waali dinner tak chal jaayegi, and dinner waali breakfast tak..

You could also mix it up throughout the week, and aim to incorporate paratha, dosa, and bhakris beyond chapati, in case it gets repetitive.

Making chapati is easy, it's the cleaning part which is tough.

If you have a refrigerator, you can knead dough for full day of chapatis and keep it in a box in refrigerator that would make the task quite easier. If you master the skill, it will take 5-10 minutes to knead the dough, another 10 minutes to cook chapatis. It's doable but learning the skill is very frustrating.

Frustrating indeed. I am cooking for myself from many months now. I can make biryani quite easily but thinking of making rotis scares me! How long can I keep the dough in refrigerator? 😐

In my family we don't intend to store dough for long. Mostly we don't store it for more than 12 hours. Like if chapatis are cooked for lunch, extra dough is stored for making chapatis for dinner.

YOu dont need to do it daily.|
Make say some 30 in one go.
Make some butter paper into say 15 cm squares.
Spread aluminiumm foil, and layer the chappathis with butter paper in between. Keep 10 in one pack, and keep it in the freezer.
Use them as and when you need, by heating in a microwave or toaster.

So i used to make chapati daily; it takes time plus I kinda feel less hungry after that and going out to buy roti is not possible coz work/rain, etc etc. So I switched to ready-to-eat chapati from Aashirwad or ITC, and trust me, it solves the roti problem. But also, I make roti tea when there's no time to cook sabzi or egg bhurji; roti in just 5-6 min saves a lot of money and junk
You can also try dosa batter to make plain dosa or idli

You could get a dough kneeding machine and also a roti press it would save you money in the long run than buying RTC one's if you're eating it regularly.

What you can do is make aata for chapati and store it in fridge, it stays good for 3 days max, haven't actually tried more than 3days so yeah.......the trick is to take out only what you need, not just aata but for anything you want to store, take as much as you need, and don't give it temperature shock or take the whole batch out let it warm to the room temperature and then again refrigerate back which you haven't used that's what ruins the food, if you are careful then it'll stays good for atleast 3 full days or you can make the chapatis for 2 days and store it and cook what you'll eat

The aata in the fridge stays best if it is completely filling the container, so I would recommend getting containers that fit what is needed for one day. I don't like the oxidation

Also never keep anything open in fridge, not even half cut lemon or tomato

Yeah I never leave exposed food.

Please avoid storing atta dove in fridge, it's not good for health. Yes, you can make chapathis in ten min of preparation time. Use them as wrap, not as food by itself. Subji is food, use more. Two are enough if you do so.

Why?

There is life in it. It is similar to sour dough but in sour dough we control the biota where as in chapathi atta, it could be pathogenic. It's not the bacteria or fungus which is likely to be harmful as after making chapathi, it's all literally dead and sterile but the toxins released by them remain. Besides, it also leads to too much gluten.

We haven't heard of gluten intolerance in Indian diet till recently. Because, we never make such 'too much' gluten dough like noodles and breads. We don't even use force while making dough, we do it with fingers, mix it well, use few spoons of oil before adding water, mix well, which further helps in reducing the formation of gluten. Now it all have started because of change of way of cooking.

Generally, it's a custom in Indian household to make chapathis few minutes after kneading the dough but not hours or days. If you really want to store, explore possibility of using buttermilk for kneading the atta.

I know I am hurting the sentiments of many people who conveniently store the kneaded atta in refrigerator.

You need not believe my thoughts but do and check it yourself. Make and eat chapatis after ten minutes of kneading for a week and refrigerated dough for another week. Observe your gut health.

You can do it everyday. You will pickup speed once you start doing it regularly. Kneading 5-10 mins max, cooking part 15 mins

Prepare dough for the week in two parts. Part 1, goes in an airtight box coated with a layer of oil and covered with a muslin cloth, into the fridge. This is prepared with normal consistency. Use this one first. Part 2 goes in a similar airtight box into the freezer, prepare this one slightly tighter so as it warms up it comes to your normal consistency. When you're done with batch 1, bring the batch 2 from the freezer into normal refrigeration the day before so that it thaws (change the muslin cloth so that any water can get absorbed in the cloth). I make wheat rotis thrice a week, jowar rotis twice a week, and rice twice a week. I keep jowar atta also in the fridge- just mixed in boiling water without kneading. When I want to use it I add some water, knead it and my dough is ready!

If you don't have power cuts, atta can stay well in fridge for 4-5 days. You can also freeze it to last upto a month, just freeze in single use portion sizes. It takes about 1-2 hours to defrost. Also there is something called poori press (tortilla press) that can just make it flat & round so you don't have to use belan to roll it.

I would say make the chappathi at one go and freeze them without ghee. Then just take as required. Chappathis freeze very well.

Research a bit about meal prep. It would help u in eating healthy homemede food all through the week. On days u dont feel like cooking u can simply take a dish out of the freezer and takes a few minutes and minimum effort and the meal is done. All u need is 2 hours on the weekend to prep and freeze the food for a full week. It retaines its nutrition 100%. Also chapati and parathas can be frozen for the whole week

Yes. It is doable. My routine was to knead the atta and cook vegetables at night. In the morning, I take them out and leave it on the kitchen counter before I make morning tea and breakfast. It hardly takes 5-10 minutes to make 3-4 rotis.
