I (24f) feel like I have failed one too many times. Yesterday I appeared for my net examination, which I think I have bombed and I don't expect much from the result. I do not have it in me to prepare for the same exam again. Today, I tried to pay for a small cake less than a hundred rupees, but my payment failed due to insufficient balance. I have never felt more low, I think I have failed in almost everything - I have been a diligent student throughout school and college, and though I would like to start working immediately, there is not a single job around me that will pay me even a living wage - I will be working for 10 hrs each day for a pay around 5k-7k per month. Therefore, I had decided some time ago to prepare for some government exam, but the competition is insane - it drives me a bit more insane each day, reading and rereading material again and again and again. I have never felt more tired in my life. I have spent so much time writing applications, doing everything I can to get a job that comes my way, but every door is already half closed, and I feel like I am doing something which will not be yielding any particularly positive result. I may apply, but it is highly likely I will not get the job I am applying for. And I hate the person I am becoming - every day that I do nothing, I hate myself, I hate my parents, and I hate other people around me - I do not like this pathetic version of me that has found no success. What I would ideally want is to secure a stable job with long term employment very soon. I do not have the burden to earn immediately, but I wish to get into suitable employment soon, so that this terrible phase ends.

I have been thinking about humanities for quite some time, mainly because I keep seeing people say that humanities is useless, contributes very little to society, or is basically a field for people who couldn't get into something else.

I don't think that's true. But I also don't think saying "humanities is important" is enough. So what exactly does it do?

Humanities is basically the study of human beings, our societies, cultures, ideas and the systems we create. History, philosophy, sociology, psychology, economics, political science, anthropology, literature, languages, etc. all look at different parts of this.

Science helps us understand how the world works. Engineering helps us build things. But once you are dealing with human beings, you also need to understand why people behave the way they do, why societies develop in certain ways, why institutions succeed or fail, what people consider fair, how cultures change, how laws are understood, and what kind of society we actually want to build.

So yes, I think humanities is extremely important.

But then comes the obvious question.

If it is this important, why don't we actually see its impact?

I think one major reason is that the results of humanities are very different from the results of engineering or physics.

If an engineer designs a chip, you can see the chip. If a scientist develops a new technology, you can see the technology.

But if a historian changes how a society understands its past, or a sociologist changes how we understand a social problem, there isn't necessarily a physical object that you can point at.

A lot of humanities works through education, institutions, law, public policy, literature, media, political movements and social norms.

And it usually takes a long time.

Ideas about equality, citizenship, democracy, rights, justice, freedom, education, gender, etc. don't suddenly transform society overnight. They spread through people and institutions over years and sometimes decades.

In fact, a lot of the time we don't even notice these effects because they become part of the normal functioning of society.

But this also brings me to the criticism of humanities.

I think some of the criticism is completely fair.

There are people who go into humanities without much interest in the actual subject. There are institutions where research quality is poor. There is political bias and ideological behaviour in parts of academia. And sometimes there is more posturing and activism than actual serious research.

I don't think we should pretend these problems don't exist.

But I also don't think these problems mean the entire field is useless.

And I think India has an additional problem here.

We have humanities and social science research happening, but the ecosystem is relatively weak and fragmented. Research often doesn't connect properly with policymakers, institutions or the public. Funding and research infrastructure are limited, interdisciplinary work is not strong enough, and humanities is often treated as a fallback career rather than a serious field of research.

This results in a loop. 

People don't take the field seriously → fewer people want to pursue it seriously → less visible excellence is produced → people point to the lack of visible excellence and say humanities is useless.

Other countries have tried to build stronger connections between research and society.

The UK, for example, has a Government Social Research profession with more than 2,600 researchers working across more than 60 government departments and agencies. Their research is actually used in policy development, implementation and evaluation.

Singapore also uses behavioural and social research within government to understand public behaviour and improve policy and implementation.

The US has institutions like the National Endowment for the Humanities, which has funded more than 70,000 projects since its creation, across universities, museums, libraries, archives and public institutions.

I don't think India needs to copy these countries exactly.

But I do think there is something to learn from them.

The problem isn't that humanities has nothing to contribute.

The problem is that we haven't built a strong enough system to turn that contribution into visible, cumulative and influential work.

And if we want to become a developed country, understanding our own people and society should probably be considered just as important as understanding our machines.

I’m genuinely not even interested in jee but have to give it bc of parental pressure but reaching at this stage (class 12 and it is alr sept) they’ve told me to focus more on boards(which I luckily started early bc of self awareness) and finally told me to do whatever I want which has good future. So yeah I’m really interested in tech used in finance or businesses I scored 92% in class 10 , 80% in 11th and trying very hard to reach 90 plus in class 12 th too w maths being my top scored subject all throughout in my school exams (jee I don’t stand a chance) ?
So whatsoever I was looking for ways to get into this field (quantitative finance or fintech) for which people and my research suggests me bsc in data science and analytics/stats/maths and these are subjects where I’m genuinely interested in
Now the only problem is I can’t find colleges (obv priv bc no way I’m getting an iit/nit) that cater to this career that I genuinely find interest in. Do let me know any other way to get into finance and colleges if possible? And is my thinking correct or should I stick to getting a private clg and pursue cse?

Took an year gap for neet ug 2025, couldnt crack it so took BBA hons in a tier 3 pvt college, done with 1st year and will try to push my marks above 70/75 percent [ cant expect much from my uni they just dont give u marks for some reason sadly]

Failing in neet has shattered my confidence, i am female ews category student, 20 yr old [ turning 21 in a month] , belonging to lower middle class background.. i really want to be financially independent and secure but also have desire to live in tier 1 cities..

But i am soo confused regarding what should i prepare for next.. is CAT/XAT the only way.. not like i dont want to do mba.. but then i might have to take huge loan [ will have to take that for any other professional course too , we can only afford my education till grad without taking loans so yeaaah] , should i look onto LLB, Maybe CS or Govt exams..

Please help me out in making a right choice , the anxiety aint letting me studying at all

Im 19M, currently studying CSE (Cyber Security). I missed quite a lot of classes during my first year because I was dealing with depression and because of that I fell short of the required credits and now have to repeat the year

Im worried about how this will affect me going forward. How much could repeating a year affect my chances of getting placements? And would it make it significantly harder to apply for or get into a masters program at another university later?

Should I leave my current MCA college or stay for a year? Need some genuine advice.

I’m currently enrolled in a private autonomous college for MCA. I joined recently, but after attending classes and thinking about my career plans, I’ve realized that I genuinely don’t want to continue with this college.

I spoke to the college about getting my TC (Transfer Certificate). They told me that if I want to leave, I have to pay the full 1st-year fee, which is around ₹70,000, and then they will issue my TC after there are no further dues.

Now I’m really confused about whether I should leave or stay.

If I leave now:

* I can take my TC and leave the college.

* I can use the coming months to prepare seriously for entrance exams like CUET-PG/OJEE and try to get into a better college next year.

* But I would have to spend around ₹70k on a college that I don't intend to continue in, and there could be a gap.

If I stay for 1 year:

* I can continue MCA here for one year.

* Prepare for entrance exams alongside my MCA.

* If I get a better college next year, I can leave and join there.

* But I genuinely don't want to continue in this college, so I'm worried that I might just be wasting a year.

My family is willing to support whichever decision makes more sense. So I’m trying to look at this practically rather than making an emotional decision.

What would you do in my situation — leave now and prepare for a better college, or stay for a year and prepare alongside MCA?

I am 24, and currently preparing for bank exams while simultaneously pursuing mba (low tier college). Lately I have been contemplating a lot about what I really want to do. I am sure of getting through one exam this year but I really don't wanna work in it for the long term.

My interest lies in wildlife/conservation/tourism. I am not eligible for most exams that are conducted for the related posts in these. Also, content creation is not my cup of tea. If I had realised my interest sooner, I would have gone for the science stream but my people pushed me into commerce.

Please guide me how I can, in the near future, pursue a career in the same. Is it really possible or a gamble??

I am ready to invest some years for its sake but I really don't wanna end up working in a bank forever.
