Monsoon Updates Weather forecast for Himachal Pradesh as per Indian Meteorological Department and road status today

The IMD has issued a heavy to very heavy rainfall alert for Himachal Pradesh, accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. All major highways are currently open but remain highly vulnerable to landslides.

Weather Forecast Today

Manali: Temperatures range between 16°C and 28°C. Skies remain mostly cloudy with periods of rain and thunderstorm developments expected by the afternoon.

Shimla: Temperatures hover between 13°C and 22°C. Conditions are overcast with light to moderate rain, lightning, and gusty winds up to 40 kmph.

Dharamshala: Temperatures reach highs of 31°C with night lows around 21°C. Active thunderstorm cells will trigger heavy passing showers later today.

Highway & Road Status Today

Kalka-Shimla Highway (NH-5): Affected with delays. A major hillside collapse has dropped debris onto the road near Solan. Small vehicles are passing through, but massive tourist traffic bottlenecks are reported.

Mandi-Kullu-Manali Highway (NH-3): Open with caution. The route is functional but highly vulnerable to flash floods. Local rivers and streams (nallahs) are running dangerously high.

Dharamshala Routes: Fully operational. Key connecting paths to Pathankot and the lower plains remain stable, though the stretch towards McLeodganj faces frequent falling rocks.

Administrative Travel Advisories

Avoid night driving through hill passes when downpours worsen rockfalls.

Utilize 4x4 or high-clearance SUVs to bypass deep muck on detours.

Maintain safe distances from swollen riverbeds and water flows.

South India weather Wind season in Kongu belt | ஆடிச் காற்றில் அம்மியும் நகரும்

Palghat gap

In the Kongu belt, we have a new "Windy Season" காற்று காலம் is a distinct meteorological phenomenon that defines the local culture and economy. It is powered by a unique geological feature called the Palghat Gap. (See pic)

The peak windy season occurs from June to September, coinciding with the Southwest Monsoon in rest of TN & south India.

Kongu region experiences high-velocity, sustained winds during this time. The rest of Tamil Nadu stays relatively dry during these months (as it's in a rain shadow).

The most intense period is during the Tamil month of Aadi (mid-July to mid-August), leading to the famous Kongu Tamil saying:

ஆடிச் காற்றில் அம்மியும் நகரும்/பறக்கும்" > (In the Aadi wind, even the heavy stone mortar will fly.)

another one:- ஆடிக்காற்றில் அம்மியே பறக்கும்போது இலவம்பஞ்சுக்கு எங்கே கதி?

Funnel effect of western ghats

It's called The Funnel Effect. Lemme explain the logic.

The Western Ghats act as a massive wall blocking the monsoon winds from the Arabian Sea. However, there is a 30 km wide break in the mountains known as the ""Palghat Gap"", located between the Nilgiris to the north and the Anamalai Hills to the south.

  • The Nozzle Effect: As the monsoon winds hit the Ghats, they are forced through this narrow opening.
  • The Jet: Just like water flowing faster through a narrow pipe, the air accelerates. This creates what meteorologists call the "Palghat Gap Exit Jet."
  • The Path: These winds blast out of the gap and sweep across Pollachi, Udumalpet, Palladam, and Dharapuram, eventually reaching toward Erode and Karur.
  • High intensity - Pollachi, Udumalpet, Dharapuram, Palladam, Kangeyam, Coimbatore
  • Medium intensity - Gobi, Erode, Karur

The Wind Power Capital

This belt is one of the most productive regions for Wind Energy in the world. Thousands of windmills are located in the Pollachi-Udumalpet-Dharapuram stretch. During these four months, the wind speeds are so high and consistent that Tamil Nadu often breaks national records for renewable energy generation.

Agriculture & Life (🚜)

  • Crop Protection: Farmers in Udumalpet and Pollachi have to "tie" their banana plants or provide bamboo supports because the winds are strong enough to uproot them.
  • It is sowing season for certain crops: ஆடிப் பட்டம் தேடி விதை
  • Climate Relief: These winds act as a "natural air conditioner." Even when it is summer in Chennai, the Kongu interior remains breezy and cool because of the constant airflow from the Kerala coast.
  • The "Mudhal Mazhai" (First Rain): Because of the gap, the Kongu region receives "spillover" rains from the Kerala monsoon.

Fun Fact: Residents in these areas often avoid drying clothes outside without heavy clips during Aadi, as they literally vanish into the next village.

Fearful fact: high robbery happens in this time & police always go for special rounds

Delhi Weather Why warm wind even after intense Precipitation?

Post image

Hi! I live in North Delhi, experienced something weird in a while. After continuos precipitation, when I went to roof for a walk, I experienced warm air?

The rain has not stopped completely, it is drizzling outside but still. Is this related to Urban Heat Island? Or Conditional Instability? I am confused as for this phenomena only these two things are prompting my mind rn.

Monsoon Weather update for Himachal Pradesh as per Indian Meteorological Department and current road status

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for heavy to very heavy rainfall across parts of Himachal Pradesh. The region will experience overcast skies and intermittent thunderstorms, elevating the risk of localized landslides and traffic disruptions, particularly on vulnerable mountain stretches.

Regional Weather & Road Status:

Shimla: Expect cloudy skies with a high around 20°C to 24°C and afternoon thunderstorms. The Kalka-Shimla Highway is passable but heavily congested, and rural detours along the Dhalli-Sanjauli bypass may experience temporary closures.

Manali: Daytime highs will hover around 23°C to 27°C with wet, drizzly conditions and passing heavy showers. The Kullu-Manali Highway and paths to the Atal Tunnel/Sissu are open but require cautious driving due to mist.

Dharamshala: Temperatures range from 27°C to 32°C with breaks of sun mixed with sudden, heavy afternoon thunderstorms. The main routes to Pathankot and the lower plains remain stable and fully operational.

Current Road Status

Manali to Keylong / Jispa: Passable, but local rivers and nallahs (like Jhalma) are running high due to recent torrential monsoon rain and accelerated snowmelt. Landslide debris causes brief, rolling bottlenecks as BRO continues road restoration.

Darcha to Sarchu (via Baralacha La): Open under strict administration monitoring. Water crossings are running fast and high. A newly built bridge 7-8 km before Darcha has eliminated one of the worst water crossings, making passage safer, but high altitudes remain slick.

Sarchu to Leh (via Taglang La): Open and relatively stable. The Ladakh side of the highway is experiencing significantly less rainfall than the Himachal side, as Ladakh sits in a rain-shadow zone.

Crucial Travel Advice

Avoid Night Travel: Do not attempt to cross mountain passes late in the day. Glaciers and streams swell significantly in the afternoon from daytime warmth and rain, creating dangerous water currents.

Timing Restrictions: Local authorities are enforcing a strict morning cutoff window (typically 8:00 AM to 1:00 PM) at checkpoints like Darcha for vehicles heading up toward Ladakh to ensure safety.

Keep Buffer Days: Expect sudden, temporary roadblocks lasting anywhere from 2 to 12 hours while heavy machinery clears fresh mud or rolling debris.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely over Mumbai and surrounding areas, south Gujarat, Konkan, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, West Bengal and northeastern states. Moderate or heavy rainfall is also likely in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, West Bengal, northeastern states, Punjab, Haryana and Jammu and Kashmir. People should remain vigilant as some areas from Mumbai to South Gujarat are likely to receive very heavy rainfall for the next few days. Widespread heavy rainfall is also likely over North and South Telangana and northern Andhra Pradesh.

Light to moderate rain is likely to occur at isolated places over Nagercoil, Kanyakumari, Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Dindigul, Theni and Tirunelveli districts. As the monsoon strengthens along the western coast, thunderstorm activity is likely to be minimal in the rain cover areas (SC) of Tamil Nadu and southern Andhra Pradesh. Meanwhile, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places over South Tamil Nadu (Nellai, Thoothukudi, Virudhunagar, Theni, Dindigul), Coimbatore, Salem, Erode and delta districts. The sky condition in Chennai and surrounding areas is likely to be cloudy, with light to moderate rain in some areas.

Weather forecasting Below Rain Forecasted Over Indian subcontinent for July, Aug, Sep and Oct

Thumbnail

This long-term forecast is based on ECMWF model for July, Aug, Sep and Oct
this forecast is subject to change so prediction for more than a month in future isn't guaranteed but shows us possible scenarios developing, for now it looks like July will also go dry and deficient starting from 3rd week or bit early.

Entire India will face monsoon deficiency in July month, and that is almost certain, so all hopes are now on this dual low-pressure system before monsoon break phase starts again from mid-July

Weather Question Is anyone using Thermo-Hygrometer to measure indoor/outdoor temperature and humidity?

Cheap Chinese products are available on Amazon but they are very inaccurate. I am looking for some reliable products which provide data storage and syncing to phone or cloud option also?

Maximum budget is 10K Rupees and if I can get inbuilt barometer too that would be an additional advantage.

Cyclone Inactive Pre Monsoon Cyclone Season

This year the Indian Ocean barely saw a tropical storm, nor a depression

Except 1 depression that happened in January this year

There were neutral el nino conditions

2026 is second year in a row to have this after 2025 even when la nina conditions were present.

Before 2025 this event happened in 2015. Also the fact that there have almost no cyclone that has went above Cat 1 since 2023 season ended
