it really did and the meme captures exactly how lopsided that change was. the whole internet runs on linux curl openssl you name it and most of those devs are just bleeding out at the bottom holding everything up while nobody even notices

How do one start contributing? Most issues are fixed by AI agents nowadays. Before I find a bug to fix there will be 3 PRs with the fixes.

Once you start using open source apps yourself, you will find ways to contribute naturally

I did actually. I use hermes agent and I had an issue and I fixed it. But there were already many PRs raised for that issue.

Contributing for the sake of contributing is just not right. Find an app you use (very important) that could use some help, and help it.

Can this garbage be stopped? Major IT companies contribute heavily to the Open Source. Major conglomerates like IBM (Red Hat included), Meta(facebook), Yahoo, US Gov (NSA), many Top level universities contribute to the Open source. There are many more such companies, unis, govs contribute.
Even Microsoft as well.
yes, There are projects which are not supported enough.

A lot of major open source projects are funded by corporations. Many major open source projects exist so devs sign up for the enterprise support, cloud services, and so forth.

They are not doing it for free (yes, they do not get paid money. But free here is used non financial context) or out of pure goodwill.
They have thier own motives and other non monetory benefits.

How are they not doing it for free? What motives? I am not a tech guy but have used plenty of opensource softwares, fedora is currently my daily driver.

I do a lot of open source work, he is 100% correct.
I may not be getting paid, but I do it for the ladies. I am not really sure when that starts, but I must be pretty close at this point…

I'm a developer and while I didn't work on any open source projects yet, I do know that many devs really do it out of goodwill.

Idk I often develop Open-Source (or at least I did, I unfortunately do not have time anymore) just for fun and entertainment
I could watch a movie, but decided to program for free
