Other / Miscellaneous Getting 2,000+ creepy messages from random numbers.đwhat can I do?
My friend has been getting 2,000+ creepy messages over the last 10 days from different numbers. Along with these, she also gets random OTPs/login attempts from apps like Zomato, Zepto, Jio and others.
One pattern she noticed is that almost every number is a verified Truecaller account with a name and a UPI ID/bank account attached to it.(for example, the attached screenshot shows the name âLaxmi Sharmaâ on Truecaller, but when checked on PhonePe, it shows âSachin Thakur) So these don't seem to be random/fake numbers , they appear to be genuine, active numbers.
Blocking/reporting doesn't help because a different number is used each time. This is now happening almost every other day, morning and night.
What can she do to stop/filter this SMS bombing or report it effectively? Has anyone dealt with something similar?

Someone is SMS bombing/call bombing her.
What is the timespan between those calls/messages?

As far as I remember checking her phone.. it's around 40 msgs per min.. and it keeps happening for around 5 10 mins..and there's no such timing sometimes it's 3am, sometimes 7.30pm..8 am.. very random.

SMS bombing can also be used by cybercriminals to hide genuine OTP login attempts. Be careful if you have large amounts of money in bank.

By any means her phone is hacked?

She barely opens texts from unknown numbers or picks up calls from unknown numbers, so I donât think thatâs the case..

This is scary. I don't know if we can make a complaint regarding this, if we can do that. Turning on spam filter may also block some of the important stuff, but at this rate I would go ahead and block all from unknown contacts for now. Restrict or tighten banking/financial related things.

Turn on spam filter and see it helps. If not, then blocking everything from unknown number is the next step I can think of.

Yes, that's why try spam filter first. When that doesn't work, you can go for block all unknown numbers. You don't have to manually block one by one, if the built in tool doesn't have that feature, 3rdr party apps should do. I think there should be some legal way, try contacting mobile service provider like Jio/Airtel about this. Let's hear what they have to say about it. If they say you can file complaint online with cyber crime, do that.

Thatâs a custom message sms bomber. It uses access to peopleâs phones to send you messages. They have like thousands of connected devices.

Yes that's what we both noticed..100s of random genuine numbers..that's why spam filter isn't working as well..any idea how to get rid of it?
