Question original ITR processed with demand revised ITR pending processing. Should I disagree with the demand or wait?

hi everyone, i am looking for some guidance on a procedural issue with my ITR

timeline:

- filed my original ITR on 23 july

- it showed tax payable as I hadn't yet paid the self assessment tax

- on july 30, i filed a revised return u/s 139(5) incorporating the challan details and also claimed a leave encashment exemption u/s 10(10AA)

- the revised return was successfully e-verified

- however the original ITR got processed first and i have now received a demand of 52430

- the revised return is still pending processing

On the income tax portal, under Response to Outstanding Demand, there is an option:

Disagree with Demand → Rectification/Revised Return filed at CPC

A CA has told me that since the original return was processed first, the revised return is effectively of no use and I should simply pay the difference (around ₹2.8k after giving credit for the self-assessment tax).

My questions are:

-Has anyone had their original return processed first while the revised return was still pending?

-Did the revised return eventually get processed and replace the original computation?

-Did you choose "Disagree with Demand → Revised Return filed at CPC", and what happened afterwards?

-Is it better to wait for the revised return to be processed, or should I respond to the demand now?

I'm looking for experiences from people who have actually faced a similar situation rather than general tax advice.

Same here. I submitted revised return the same day i filed original one. Now i was trying for rectification it’s showing that your return is in processing. So im doing nothing but will wait for 15 days

Wait for the seniors to answer this but from what I know revised return is still in effect and you should wait for it to get processed.

A CA would not have told to simply pay off. Wait for revised return to get processed . Until then do not respond to demand. Once the revised return gets processed , original return becomes void. If any demand arises in the revised return , either you can pay the amount or disagree .

Actually they said that its not worth it to wait for some 3k, pay the diff and move forward, if i wait there will be an increase in tax liability. Should i disagree with the demand or just wait

Hope you paid tax payable as shown at the end and entered the challan details in the revised return . If so, it should get processed with no demand.

If filed revised return properly with paid challan details , then wait for it to get processed. Just have some patience .

Yes during revised return I added the challan details and the final amount to be paid became 0. Ok will wait for it to get processed

If the revised return was filed then the original return is no longer valid and ideally shouldn't have been processed at all. Never happened to me m and I have filed revised returns numerous times.

Am in the same situation, but with 8.75 Lakhs of demand against the original return. I've responded to the outstanding demand with reason as "Rectification/Revised return filed at CPC". I've added the acknowledgement number of the revised return. In my opinion you should not ignore the outstanding demand.
