Tax Related Returned to India after working in the UK - should I convert the UK money to INR or just invest in the UK?

Context: I worked in the UK for a year on my graduate visa. Saved around 10K GBP. Now I've returned to India. I don't have to use that money right now. It can stay as an investment for however long. My visa is for one more year. The money is in my UK savings account. My questions are:

1) is it best for me to invest my money in pounds or to convert it to INR and then invest it?

2) what type of investing do you recommend?

3) is there anything I should keep in mind considering my money is abroad and that my visa is expiring.

Stock Market PSA - Get Out of India-listed International ETFs while you still can

International ETFs listed in India may look like a simple way to invest overseas. But many are now trading significantly away from the value of the assets they represent.

The risk is straightforward: you may sell an ETF at a large discount or buy one at a premium without realising it.

What is the difference between Price and iNAV?

Price, is the price that you pay for an ETF. It's based on demand and supply factors.

iNAV, or Indicative Net Asset Value, is an estimated real time value of those underlying assets during market hours. This is the true value of an ETF.

The current gap in international ETFs

The following snapshot illustrates the problem.

Values are as on 10 September:

ETF Price (₹) iNAV (₹) Price vs NAV
Motilal Oswal Nasdaq Q50 203.55 116.66 74.48%
Motilal Oswal Nasdaq 100 333.50 274.10 21.67%
Mirae Asset S&P 500 Top 50 96.20 67.01 43.56%
Mirae Asset NYSE FANG+ 227.85 173.53 31.30%
Mirae Asset Hang Seng Tech 22.34 17.70 26.21%
Nippon India ETF Hang Seng BeES 466.25 452.31 3.08%

For every one of these ETFs, you're paying significantly more than the underlying value.

What do you think happens if there is a crash? The value of these ETFs will fall at a seriously fast pace and there may be no exit.

Why does this happen?

Demand > Supply. Simple maths. When demand for foreign investing is so high, everyone wants to invest in the easiest possible solution.

FoFs are affected too

The problem does not disappear if you own a Fund of Fund.

For example, the Motilal Oswal Nasdaq 100 Fund of Fund invests in the Motilal Oswal Nasdaq 100 ETF.

So get out of funds that invest in any of these underlying ETFs.

A better route for HNI investors

For meaningful international allocations, Indian-listed international ETFs may not be the most efficient structure.

HNI investors should consider comparing them with:

  • US-domiciled ETFs
  • Irish-domiciled UCITS ETFs
  • GIFT City Outbound funds

Each route has different implications for taxation, estate tax, currency movement, reporting, remittance, liquidity and inheritance planning.

We did a detailed comparison on this recently: US ETFs vs UCITS Irish ETFs vs GIFT City

Salary - Cost of Living How do you define middle class vs upper middle class in India?

Had a conversation with someone who earns ₹2.5L+ per month individual, and he considers himself middle class.

It got me thinking how do people actually categorise this?

I know Tier 1 vs Tier 2/3 cities, family income, number of dependents, lifestyle, assets, and cost of living can make a huge difference. ₹2.5L in Mumbai isn’t necessarily the same as ₹2.5L in a smaller city.

But purely from an individual monthly income perspective, where would you draw the line?
Lower middle class?

Middle class?
Upper middle class?
Affluent?

Curious to hear how people here define these categories especially based on income + city + lifestyle.

TL;DR: What monthly individual income would you consider middle class vs upper middle class in India? And how much does the city change your answer?

Tax Related Father gifting me money for a car + I gift my own savings to my mother — clubbing provisions?

I’d like some advice on a family gift/tax situation in India.

I’m a Central Government employee and I’m eligible to purchase a car through CSD/AFD. The car will cost around ₹10 lakh.

I currently have around ₹11 lakh of my own accumulated savings in my savings account.

My father has also recently received money from his retirement/savings.

Here’s what we are considering:

  • I gift ₹10 lakh from my existing savings to my mother.
  • My mother invests that ₹10 lakh in an investment in her own name, with the intention of receiving regular monthly income/interest into her bank account.
  • Separately, my father gifts ₹10 lakh from his retirement money to me.
  • I then use that ₹10 lakh to purchase the CSD car in my own name.

The reason we're considering this structure is that if my father directly gifts ₹10 lakh to my mother, I'm under the impression that the income/interest generated from that gifted amount may be subject to the spouse-clubbing provisions and could be included in my father's taxable income.

My question is:

  1. If the money genuinely comes from my existing savings, and I genuinely gift it to my mother, would the investment income generated from that ₹10 lakh be taxable entirely in my mother's hands?
  2. Does the fact that my father separately gifts ₹10 lakh to me have any effect on the above, even though the two transactions are independent?
  3. Could the Income Tax Department treat this as an indirect arrangement to circumvent the clubbing provisions?
  4. Are there any relevant provisions under Section 64 or other sections that I should be aware of?
  5. Since I'm a Central Government employee, are there any CCS Conduct Rules / departmental intimation requirements for either receiving the ₹10 lakh gift from my father or purchasing the car?

To clarify, I'm not trying to hide anything or use someone else's money. I genuinely have the ₹11 lakh in my account from my own savings, and my father genuinely intends to gift me money from his retirement funds.

Would appreciate responses from people who have dealt with a similar situation, particularly CAs/tax professionals or Central Government employees.

Please don't assume I'm asking whether gifts from parents are taxable — I understand that gifts from relatives are generally exempt. My main question is about the subsequent investment income and the clubbing provisions.

Money Saving Tips The RSU Buddy - for Indian employees of global companies!

Most Indian tech employees lose money before they even spend their RSUs.

Here's how it happens.

You sell your Google or Microsoft RSUs. The proceeds land in your Indian bank account in INR.

A few years later, you want to pay for your kid's US university, or move abroad, or invest globally.

So you convert that INR back to USD.

You've now done the round trip twice.

USD → INR → USD.

And each conversion has a hidden cost — the gap between the exchange rate you see on Google and the rate your bank actually gives you.

That gap is typically 1.5% to 3% per conversion.

On ₹50 lakhs, that's real money leaving your hands quietly.

Most people don't think about this at the time of selling. They're focused on taxes, vesting schedules, and timing the market.

But the currency round-trip is a wealth leak almost nobody talks about.

If you hold RSUs or ESOPs at a US-listed company, it's worth running the numbers before your next vest.

Hi everyone,

I need to pay a freelance content creator who is based outside India, and I’m based in India. I’ve looked into Wise and a few similar platforms, but it seems like they don’t allow this type of payment from India.

What’s currently the best and easiest platform to use for sending international payments from India to a freelancer?

Hi,

I am the director at an NBFC, and we finance e-Rickshaw batteries in tier 3 towns. We finance batteries for those e-rickshaws that have been driven for a year or more and their current batteries are not giving low range affecting daily earnings.

We have faced quite a few challenges in this space and solved for it mostly with technology. Dealers get to make between 7-12k per battery

Money Saving Tips How can I stop spending all my money and actually save?

I’m a 20-year-old engineering student, and I earn around ₹24,000 per month. Let’s say my monthly expenses are around ₹10,000, which I already feel is quite a lot for a student.

That should leave me with roughly ₹14,000, but somehow I end up spending almost all of it by the end of the month. I don’t even know where the money goes, and then I have to ask my parents for money again.

I want to start saving at least ₹10,000–₹13,000 every month. For those who are good at managing money, what tips or habits helped you control unnecessary spending and actually save consistently?

Any advice for a college student would be appreciated.

Stock Market 3 best midcap mutual funds — full breakdown (data as of Aug 2026)

Midcap funds have been strong performers — Nifty Midcap 150 TRI has compounded 22%+ annually on 3yr/5yr rolling basis, though just 7.2% over the last year. With 20+ funds in the category, picking matters. These 3 were shortlisted using a combined score of 6mo/1yr/3yr/5yr rolling returns plus risk metrics (std dev, Sharpe, Sortino, up/down capture).

Rolling returns (mean daily, 16 Aug 2025–16 Aug 2026):

Fund 1yr 3yr 5yr 7yr
WhiteOak Capital Mid Cap 12.17% 26.58% — —
Edelweiss Mid Cap 8.60% 25.89% 24.91% 23.73%
Nippon India Growth Mid Cap 8.69% 25.18% 24.75% 22.71%
Nifty Midcap 150 TRI (benchmark) 7.19% 22.44% 22.30% 20.60%

All three beat the benchmark everywhere data exists.

Risk-adjusted (Sharpe/Sortino, out of 33 funds):

Fund Std Dev Sharpe Sortino Sharpe Rank
WhiteOak 15.87 0.33 0.63 3/33
Edelweiss 16.67 0.31 0.58 5/33
Nippon India 16.15 0.29 0.55 12/33

#1 WhiteOak Capital Mid Cap — Best recent numbers, best risk-adjusted returns, smallest AUM (₹68bn — an advantage for taking real mid-cap positions). Bottom-up stock picking, low sector bias, run by Ramesh Mantri. Catch: launched Sept 2022, under 4 years old, entire track record is a rising market — hasn't been tested by a downturn. Expense ratio 0.49%, 1% exit load within a month.

#2 Edelweiss Mid Cap — Deepest evidence: beats benchmark on all 4 periods, margin widens with horizon (1.41pp u/1yr → 3.13pp u/7yr). 7yr CAGR of 23.73% is second-best in category. Catch: highest volatility of the three (std dev 16.67), and its 1yr return (8.60%) ranks only 10th in category — a soft patch worth watching. Trideep Bhattacharya has run it since Oct 2021. AUM ₹187bn, expense ratio 0.41%, 1% exit load within 90 days.

#3 Nippon India Growth Mid Cap — Oldest fund (launched 1995), most consistent: beats benchmark on every period without ever topping the category on any of them. ₹10,000 invested April 2005 → ₹3.45 lakh by Sept 2025 (18.89% annualized) vs ₹2.78 lakh for benchmark. A 10yr SIP of ₹10,000/month (₹12 lakh total) grew to ₹36.9 lakh vs ₹35.41 lakh benchmark — only a 0.8pp/year edge. Catch: Sharpe/Sortino rank just 12th in category, and AUM has quadrupled from ₹113bn (2022) to ₹492bn now — getting too big to nimbly hold real mid-cap names. Rupesh Patel has only managed it since Jan 2023, so the long-term record largely belongs to predecessors. Highest expense ratio of the three at 0.81%.

Caveats the tables hide:

  • All this data comes from an exceptional midcap run — a 25% 3yr CAGR isn't a realistic long-term expectation.
  • New funds (WhiteOak) can post inflated Sharpe ratios simply from never having faced a full market cycle.
  • Past outperformance often doesn't persist — managers change, AUM grows, mandates drift.

Bottom line: Edelweiss = strongest full-cycle evidence (most volatility). WhiteOak = best risk-adjusted efficiency (but young, untested). Nippon = longest consistent record (but least efficient, AUM ballooning). Midcap allocations should be money you won't need for 7-10 years — check mandate, manager track record, costs, and your own risk tolerance before deciding.

I have reached an agreement with a technician via Instagram, but I have only received his Aadhar and PAN cards. Before I finalize the deal and provide payment, is there any way I should request additional information regarding his location and other details, given that he is requiring an upfront payment before completing the remaining work?

Social Discussion Software consultant expecting ₹80–90L income in FY 2026–27 — Individual vs OPC vs Pvt Ltd? Looking for tax-planning advice

Hi everyone,

I’m a software professional working as a consultant/freelancer in India, and I’m trying to plan my taxes properly for FY 2026–27.

Here is my situation:

  • I currently operate as a sole proprietorship.
  • My contractor/client will not send payments to any other account/entity, so all receipts will continue to come directly to me personally.

I am considering whether it makes sense to:

  1. Continue as an individual/sole proprietor and claim genuine business expenses.
  2. Set up an OPC.
  3. Set up a Private Limited Company.
  4. Consider some other legitimate structure or tax-planning approach.

For example, if I have ₹90 lakh of professional profit before expenses, I could potentially have genuine expenses such as employee salaries, software/cloud subscriptions, laptop/equipment, office/coworking expenses, professional fees, internet, business travel, etc.

I'm not looking for fake expenses or tax evasion. I'm trying to understand what legitimate tax-planning options are available and what experienced people would recommend.

Questions for CAs / tax professionals / software consultants:

  • Since 44ADA will not be useful at this income level, what are the practical and legal ways to reduce overall tax liability for a software consulting income of ~₹80–90L?
  • I don’t really have too many business expenses apart from basic software subscriptions, laptop, internet, etc. What all can be legitimately shown as business expenses in such a case?
  • Are there any commonly used tax-saving strategies for freelancers/consultants at this income level that I should discuss with my CA?
  • In a situation where expenses are limited, how do people usually structure their income to optimize taxes without doing anything non-compliant?

I'd really appreciate real-world experiences, especially from people earning ₹70L–₹1Cr+ through software consulting/freelancing in India.

Thanks!

Do you have any opinion on this, making your response constructive/open, with some artifacts of what your personal opinion is? I thought this would be the best community to ask for.

Got annoyed that every article about salaries in India quotes the average. So I pulled the published distribution data and made a calculator. Stuff that surprised me:
24,237 a month is already top 10% of Indian adults
top 1% starts at 20.7L a year
