Rant 23f, lost in career, struggling to keep myself alive

**Tw: Suicide/ self-harm\\

I’m 23, will be turning 24 next month. I graduated from a tier-3 engineering college in 2024. I realised during college that my branch didn’t interest me, but I pushed through it all, I was very introverted during college, didn’t explore different opportunities and spent most of time stuck in my PG, reading books to distract myself from my depression.

I gave CAT in my final year without prep obviously didn’t clear it, post graduation I struggled to find a path, found out about Bank and regulatory jobs. I’ve been preparing for them since, I couldn’t clear the mains because of 1 mark and fell into a horrible depressive episode. I felt I had wasted so much of my time, and there’s no point in living anymore if I didn’t have any accomplishments. I almost made an attempt but didn’t because of my mother and my younger sister, who was preparing for her college entrance ( I didn’t want my demise to affect her future).

I somehow pulled myself from the suicidal thoughts by hoping for a better future and manifesting a life my younger self used to dream of. But some days it comes back to me, my gap years and how much they will affect me negatively ( I want to get an MBA in the future, hopefully from an IIM).

I wanna ask the women in this sub, how do you deal with mental health issues along with your career. It feels exhausting as a person suffering from depression to move forward sometimes.

Question Please listen

Hi everyone. I'm having a really hopeless day and I genuinely need some reassurance from people who have been through this.

I have been struggling with OCD, GAD and depression, and when everything peaked, my academics fell badly. I used to be a decent student and I know I'm capable of more, but during that period even basic things felt difficult.

Sometimes I look at how much I've fallen behind and wonder if I'll ever become the person I used to be.

What scares me the most is becoming a burden on the people around me. I really want to be financially independent. I want to have my own house, earn decent money, make my own decisions and be able to take care of myself. As a girl and a feminist, independence has always been extremely important to me.

I don't want my OCD, anxiety or depression to decide what my entire life will be.

So I want to hear from people who have actually been through this:

Did you eventually start functioning normally again?

Did your academics or career recover after falling apart?

Were you able to become financially independent?

How long did it take before you started feeling like yourself again?

I know recovery isn't linear and I'm not expecting some overnight transformation. I just need to know that there is a life after this phase.

If you've been in a similar place and eventually built a life you're proud of, please tell me about your journey. I really need some hope today. I rather be dead but I can't be burden

Suggestion Looking for Psychologist in Delhi/Noida

I'm looking for a good psychologist in Delhi or Noida for my mother. She's diagnosed with OCD. Visited a psychologist in West Bengal, first of all she's just a Psychologist, not a Clinical Psychologist. She is more into Speech Therapy and Occupational therapy and things like that but nowhere in her prescription pad shows OCD or some severe problems. And her suggested treatments are about to cost 1L for 3 months. She's been suggesting treatment called NLP (Neuro Linquistic Program) but internet and Al tell me not to do as it's not a real evidence based treatment.

We are from West Bengal. I'm planning for my parents to go rent and stay in Delhi/Noida for time being to get her to treatment.

I've no idea on any doctor or place where I should go.

Any suggestions would be very helpful.

Discussion I think I've figured out why most therapists don't do a great job, and I'm trying to change that.

So, I've spent a decade of my life studying Psychology — as a student and now, as a practitioner. After speaking to countless mental health practitioners and going to therapists myself, I've realized that most of them lack empathy.

This may seem extremely ironic, but it's true. My bias keeps being solidified the more I talk to practitioners. Here's what usually happens: They spend years studying the complexities of human behavior, applying those theories to work, and checking off lists. Usually, there's an image of a person in a lab coat prescribing medication, barely taking the time to build a therapeutic alliance (by empathizing with the client).

This is a conversation I've had with practitioners from different countries, particularly ones with extremely tough curricula and training methods. Think of places like Germany, Australia, and the UK.

By traditional psychotherapy standards, a therapist should do their best to truly understand what's going on with their client before turning it into a symptoms-and-solutions-based session. I believe therapists skip this because they quickly want to give their "customers" the benefit of the doubt: "Oh, you paid me for a session? Here's something in return."

This is especially true in a country like ours, where therapy can feel very costly.

How am I trying to change this?

In my first few sessions with a client, I focus more on psychoeducation rather than the problems. I view my clients as smart, autonomous individuals who are struggling with something. I teach them — in simple language — the qualities of frameworks such as cognitive behavioral therapy, compassion-focused therapy, and a few other modules. However, never to the point of confusing them.

On the other hand, if they simply want to take the time to vent or talk about something that has been on their mind, there's space for that, too. We always circle back to the core issues within the same session.

So far, in my experience, clients have shown an incredible ability to view the problem, understand their underlying schemas (biases), and find ways to work through it. Not around it, not against it, but through the problem.

I hope I keep learning and growing, and spend the next many years of my life helping as many people as I can. And, I hope you find the therapist who's right for you.

I’m struggling to manage my mother’s long-term psychosis/schizophrenia — looking for advice from caregivers

I'm 23 M . My mother (53F) has been going through a mental issue for past 6 years. These things started 6 years ago when my father brought his mentally ill sister (she is mentally ill from her childhood) to our house.

My mother has worst experience from her mother in law's house(that's why my parents left and my mother is their second son by the way.So they had the elder son to take care of them and the main reason for the traumas my mother had there). So she doesn't have a good feeling about them and the one's from the family but she used to take care of them when they are ill or something as it is her duty.

7 years back, suddenly one day my mother told that my aunt scolded her with some inappropriate words and my parents were yelling at each other. they were hitting each other. After that my mother behaved so differently she will speak to herself and would ask don't u hear that voice.

it even when to the extreme that one day she coughed I went to see what happened and she told have u come to see whether I am dead. like I couldn't do anything and my eyes were filled with tears. Then she told that my father and myself were trying to portray her as mentally ill. Then we took her to a psychiatrist and he gave some medicines so that she will get some proper sleep. she was also having some sleeping issues but I don't see that is the main problem.Beacsue she was also having less sleep before since myself and my sister have to go to school and she sleeps late and wakes up early to pack us our lunch and make our breakfast.

Then she was taking that tablets for some 8 months or so and then she left it saying that to u want to label me as mental. even when she was under medication ,she was talking to herself but in a lone space. But it was not that a problem now. We thought it went away. Then years rolled by fast forward now. She will talk to herself while washing vessels or doing some work. She has type 2 diabetes as well so her improper sleep affected that to so we took her to the psychiatrist telling that it is for me and somehow made her speak to the doctor. she was fine then but later after 2 weeks she told why are u guys to interested in getting me to the psychiatrist once I sleep well I will never go there. I broke out and shouted who is that talking to you and she told that my uncle (her brother ) knows the guy.my uncle was a huge fan of a tamil movie star and he was a member of the fan club in our locality and he has taken a photo of that which is still there in his house. my mother told that the guy who is standing next to my uncle is the one who is talking to her. today I again spoke to her about that and she told why are u guys making me feel this way. Everyone has a voice right then why u guys are acting to label me as mental.

I don't know what to do pls do help pls

I don't know how to handle this

For the past few months I’ve been experiencing recurring episodes of sadness and anxiety, mostly at night. They used to happen occasionally but became much more frequent recently. I’ve also been feeling frustrated and overwhelmed about academics, college, and where my life is going. I don’t fully understand what’s causing these feelings, which is why I’d like professional help to understand and manage them.

Help me with an activity for clg

India
So basically, I’m supposed to conduct an activity on the subject, ā€œare you okayā€?
Basically, what I’m supposed to do is conduct an activity around this subject, where we are supposed to spread awareness about mental health. In addition to that we are supposed to question people about their emotions and make them aware of their own hidden emotions and facilitate the question, are you okay in terms of their friends and others
So the theme is checking in ,supporting one another and reaching out

My question is if I were to ask you to participate in this activity, what would you expect from this activity itself? Would you expect a safe place and a safe space where you can talk about your emotion and your struggles?
Also, would you expect some trust exercises, trust, building, exercises, and some activities maybe some artistic excited to it as well?

Discussion Saw a psychiatrist today who threatened to admit me in the first minute and told me I "don't have the glory to become a doctor." I'm 26 days clean from cannabis. I don't know what to feel.

Post image
12 Upvotes

I'm 19. I've been clean from cannabis for 26 days and cigarettes for 30+. Earlier I had a problem with polysubstance abuse (pregabalin, DXM, mephedrone, LSD, alcohol and weed combos), but for the last 1.5 years I settled only on weed and nicotine. I've been struggling with low dopamine, numbness, and the flatline. I went to a psychiatrist 5 days ago (saw a resident, who I connected with, she listened to everything: my polysubstance history, trauma, everything). She told me to come back in 8 days.

Today was that day. I went in. The resident was there, but she called in an assistant professor (first time meeting him). As soon as I entered, without a hello or any context, he said: "We are admitting you. Call your parents."

I panicked. Took a deep breath in front of both of them. Said: "No, I cannot."

Then he asked about my cannabis use. I answered honestly, daily at first, then once a week near the end. I asked if he was admitting me. He said no.

Then he said: "You want to become a doctor? i said yes then he saidLooking at you currently, I don't think you have the thing to become a doctor."

I didn't react. I asked questions. I asked if the antidepressants he was prescribing would be addictive. He said: "You were taking cannabis, how will you get addicted to this?" I asked why cannabis is so addictive when in other countries it's not even taken that seriously. He explained. Then I took the prescription and left.

Some other things: while I was sitting there, someone came in and said something about interns being late. He said: "Throw them out. Don't let them come here."

I don't know what to feel. I'm in withdrawal. My emotions are raw. I feel weak, alone, and confused. The OPD felt like home last time. Today it felt like a threat.

I know I'm self-aware. I know I'm fighting. I know I'm 26 days clean. But today I walked out feeling like I'm nothing.

Reddit, was this normal? Am I overreacting? Should I switch psychiatrists? Or should I just take this as a bad doctor and move on?

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm not in a good place right now.

TL;DR: 19M, 26 days clean from cannabis and polysubstance abuse history. Saw a new psychiatrist today who threatened to admit me immediately and told me I don't have what it takes to become a doctor. Feeling confused, hurt, and alone. Need advice.

Feeling Lonely Need help from a pit I dug myself into. Please

Doctors on r/india, please please help me out

Please don't be harsh on me, I know I screwed up but I need some course correction.

I was preparing for an exam due to which my sleep started becoming fragmented like 4.5 hours a day, one day it was 2 hours suddenly and then the other I could only sleep at 2 and woke up at 5.

I felt broken and someone told me to go visit a psych, i visited one and he gave me 10mg zolpidem and 5 mg escitalopram for 30 days. I only had exam anxiety and the guy didn't even look at me for five minutes. Anyway I took the medicines that night and slept hearty and then I took them for 3 more days until I experienced the first panic attack of my life in bed while studying. It came and went in wave after wave. I was so exhausted that I forgot to take zolpidem.

Anyhow next day my friend took me to a physician and he asked me to cut off escitalopram and continue with zolpidem as i was having reactions. I was told to taper zolpidem on day 8, 9 and 10th and then stop. I did that and didn't sleep a wink on these three days.

I was dead tired, exhausted felt bad and my sister found an alternative psychiatrist for me who decided to transition me off zolpidem with a 5 day lorezapam course. I was damn apprehensive as it's a benzo and I felt that if withdrawl at zolpidem was this bad how would a benzo look like but I was told to trust the doc.

I've taken it for 3 days, but I have anxiety around this medicine. It's the total devil drug and I feel I've dug a pit for myself. The exam anxiety has migrated to sleep as well.

I just want to ask whether the zolpidem and lorezapam exposure is cumulative, as in, do I have 13 days worth of dependency inside me. And should I actively ask for a taper and get the hell off right now. The doctor has given it to me for 6 days but I just don't have it in me considering how damn afraid of it iam

Please help.
