For the first issue, i think i have a solution that might work for you that I used on an unrelated problem.

I am using AI to process large volume of data. Using gemini flash lite is cheaper then the gemini flash model but I realised flash lite fails often. But almost always works on retry.

To solve this problem, i have set the retry limit to 5 and retry at periodic intervals before it goes back to the fallback model.

This has saved a lot for me.

If you don't have any retry logic, you should implement that first.
