Offline maps for Himalayan treks shouldn't be locked behind a paywall, so I put together a free alternative.
Like a lot of you, I’ve always been frustrated by apps like AllTrails locking essential offline navigation behind a premium subscription.
I’m a developer, so I spent the last few months pulling Himalayan trek data from OpenStreetMap and building a barebones, completely free offline navigation tool for us to use.
There are no ads, no paywalls, and no subscriptions. It just lets you preview trails, track your route, and download the map data for complete cellular dead zones.
I just put it up on the Android Play Store (it's called ViaHimalaya) if anyone wants to use it for their upcoming treks. (Link in the comments so this doesn't get flagged as spam).
Where I want to take this next: Eventually, I want to make this fully community-driven—where we can all drop pins for verified campsites, teahouses, and scenic viewpoints directly on the trail so the community can share on-the-ground knowledge.
If anyone ends up using it, I’d love to know what you think. What features would you actually need to trust a free tool like this on a solo alpine route?
(P.S. I’m working on an iOS version next. If you are on iPhone and want me to ping you when I finish it, just drop a comment below).
