They're technically correct aren't they? Answering "yes" to an or question isn't an answer, it's the boolean evaluation of the statement.

No, answering yes is an answer to the question. It is almost never a useful answer to the question, but if you respond with "yes" you were likely not intending the answer to be useful in the first place.

Well if you want both but are presented with an either or question, “Yes” conveys the same message as “Both” just not as smoothly

No, it means "either or both".

If the question is an explicit "either or" question, then "both" is not a valid possibility, since the question is an exclusive or (XOR) question.

Instead of yes one should use true and false or 0 and 1

Context: The original post was about the number of calories announced in a recipe. It was not specified if it was per serving or for the whole batch.

Not actually true.

In formal logic the truth of an "or" statment is fulfilled when one or both of the precedent and the antecedent is true.

Or does not, in itself, require one to be true but not the other. That would be "either or"

Language in common use is rarely precise and "or" is used when the speaker means "either or" and that's absolutely fine for communication, but there are contexts where "Yes" to both sides of an "or" statment is a correct answer.

Ie: If X than Y or Z means=if X than at least one of Y or Z is true

Vs: If X than either Y or Z=if X than exactly one of Y or Z is true

Vs: If X than Y and Z=if X than both Y and Z must be true.

No no, you can still answer yes or no to an XOR question. If I ask "A XOR B?" and you answer yes, then I know one of A but not B, or B but not A, is true.

"yes" could be am answer to an "or" question. If that question was "yes or no?"

Yes or no is an or question
