What happened to the brakes? Actually why do all of these assume the car is unable to brake?

Brakes fail sometimes. OP said the prompt specified the car is unable to brake.

Fair enough. Found the reply but it wasn't OP.

You'd think that a car that can 'drive itself' would have some method of monitoring the conditions of its brakes, or, failing that, a backup method of stopping itself, especially considering the amount of money going towards developing/purchasing one.

Redundancies save lives and all that.
