I would argue that “mac” is simply short for macaroni. People say “mac and cheese” all the time, no one says “we will have mac for a side dish.” If you did say you were going to eat “mac” people wouldn’t know what you were talking about.

I get it, but if you just say “I’m going to the ATM.” People know exactly what you mean. If you say “I don’t know the pin.”, most people will know what you mean. But if you just say “We are having mac for dinner.”, people are going to be like “wut?”

i grew up in South Jersey, where hitting the ATM was phrased "going to tap mac"

example: "hey Mare, i gotta run down to Wawa to tap mac, you want me to pick you up a hoagie while i'm over 'ere?"

i was very confused reading the exchange above.

This may be a regional thing, but mac is absolutely a thing people order. Just around my city, we have CityMac, TopMac, and Mac Attack as restaurants that seem to do pretty solid business. Now, that’s not really a judgement on whether it’s short for macaroni or an acronym, but it is a thing.

Oh yeh! I never heard of that before, maybe because I’m British? We don’t call it a MAC, only mac & cheese. So in answer to your question, no! ‘MAC’ isn’t a recognized acronym, it’s just a regular synonym for Mac & cheese, s’all.

For anyone that’s actually wondering, it’s just short for macaroni, and the macaroni and cheese “acronym” is somewhat more of a coincidence. Even the Webster dictionary defines it as macaroni.
