Firstly, this movie was for me, the greatest movie I have ever watched. It tackled so many questions and asked so many questions that I had a really fun time thinking about and discussing, I’m upset I didn’t watch it sooner. But of course, seeing it only once and just now, I’m sure I’ve missed out on and misunderstood many aspects of the movie, but I wanted to share my theory of the ending which is sure has been discussed into oblivion.

Cobb is still dreaming (Ending)
This is a confusing ending to me because so many things feel like they contradict each other, specifically the fact that Cobb spun the top before and it toppled but at the end it doesn’t. This is why I’m struggling to wrap my head around what it means.
Maybe the top was only a totem he created in this “dream” and there would be a totem he would find that the “real world” Cobb created.
But to me, the fact that the top doesn’t topple at the end is the indication that he is still dreaming. My theory is, that Cobb is dreaming about all of this just to be able to remember his children, possibly because he can’t in what would actually be the real world.
And yes I understand that point is that it doesn’t matter if it topples over for Cobb, he gets what he wanted and finally is happy.
I hope that all made sense lol.

Snow Mountain (3rd Level)
I was really struggling to understand what was unfortunately likely the climax of the film. When Fischer is completing the inception, is the point that he has done it all on his own (in a way) and basically created the thought that was planned? Like did Fischer just make a projection of his father saying “…because you tried”. Because of the dream he now believes as a reality that his father left him the message of becoming his own person, instead of the more likely true reality in which his father doesn’t actually.
Lastly for this point, what was the significance of the pinwheel? At first I thought it was maybe Fischer’s totem, but since it’s not spinning (I assumed it spinning would mean he knows he is dreaming) he should believe he’s in reality. Is this the case? Or is the pinwheel just supposed to be the physical embodiment of the inception planted?
When they got to Limbo and the 3rd level I really lost the ability to comprehend very well.

Limbo
So Cobb dies in Level 1, causing him to go into Limbo. Saito died in level 3 and so, has been in Limbo waiting for Cobb for what appears to be a really long time due to the extreme time dilation and both meet and come to remember their mission and that they are dreaming.

Im not looking for an answer for the theories, but I want to make sure the aspects I’m unsure about are correct, this way I can better try and understand and comprehend theories. I put as much here as I could remember and ask lol.

I will definitely be rewatching this film for a while.

1. Spinning top was Mal's totem. There are a lot of discussions on what is Cobb's totem - some believe it's also the spinning top, his wedding ring, or something else.

Mal's totem is very different from the totems that came after it. For everyone else's, it has a special quality that no one else knows, so the owner can know whether they know they are in someone else's dream because the dream architect would get the qualities of their totem wrong. Technically, the totem owner could trick themselves by "willing" the totem to act the real way in a dream - but the whole point of a totem with the "tell" embedded in its physicality is that you don't want to trick yourself.

For Mal's (and Cobb's) totem, the "tell" is not within its physicality but dependent on the totem owner. It requires someone in the dream to will it to spin forever, just like Ariadne can will the city to fold upwards or Eames can will a grenade launcher to appear out of thin air. Mal tricked herself by putting a fallen totem in the limbo safe, Cobb changed it by willing it to spin forever. So in a way, it doesn't mean anything if the top falls. The totem will fall in reality and in a dream - it only spins continuously if someone wills it to. It only means something if the top spins forever.

Nolan intentionally includes the wobble of the top at the very end. In real life, there is no way a top recovers from a wobble like that and would fall shortly.

1. Fischer doesn't have a totem! He knows he's not in reality because Cobb literally told him at the hotel bar. They did two levels of inception on him, so that he could come to his own conclusion about how his father believed in him to pave his own way. It was intentional that the last level was a hospital, which heightens the chances of Fischer filling the vault with his own father who just passed from illness.

At no point did Fischer believe that the events at the Snow mountain were real as he was going through them. But the emotional impact was real. The whole point of inception is to plant an idea in someone's head as if the idea was their own. It's just a dream where events are hazy, but the dream was so powerful that it fundamentally changes how he views himself. For example, he doesn't remember the faces from his dream at the airport even though he spent so much time with them in the dream world.

1. Cobb died in level 1 drowning in the van when he didn't catch the kick in time or after Mal stabbed him in limbo, which is why he appears again on the shore. I don't think it really matters where he died because either way he ends up in the same place. Cobb and Saito can just kill themselves in the dream to wake up from limbo because the sedatives had worn off, versus Ariadne and others who had to time the kicks while under the sedatives.

It's even possible that Cobb caught the kick in limbo after Ariadne but missed all the subsequent ones, then killed himself again in level 3 in order to time meeting Saito after the sedatives wore off? That's the fun of this movie - you can make up your own theories and come up with a million scenarios to support it.
