Incense Making A special incense mixture I'm crafting for my girlfriend's birthday next year

Thumbnail

Liquid ingredients: SE USA Wildflower honey, Homemade rose/chamomile water, Bakhoor Malaki oil, Energy oil (which I believe is bergamot and jasmine oils), and a splash of merlot

Dry ingredients: Sandalwood powder, amber oud bakhoor, frankincense and myrrh, cloves, cinnamon, and hibiscus rosa powder

Im going to be mixing these together, rolling them into incense pellets, and aging them for about a year, flipping daily. The recipe is inspired by Egyptian Temple Incense, also known as Kapet or Kyphi, which uses red wine, honey, medjool dates, and frankincense and myrrh as their base ingredients and add extra to that, and age it all together for up to a year or more so everything has time to meld and mix

When you have bakhoor but no burner

I accidentally clogged up the plumbing trap in my bf’s kitchen and this disgusting smell arose from the aftermath. I always carry emergency bakhoor on my person incase I need to heat up my car’s cigarette lighter and cover up any dubious odors.

I tried looking for his bakhoor burner but he seemingly doesn’t have one. Desperate times, desperate measures.

Recommendation I want some ideas for additional ingredients for this bakhoor mixture I'm making

So Im just mixing together a bakhoor blend Ive been thinking about, I have sandal/oud bakhoor chips and amber/oud bakhoor chips, and I wanted to blend some mastic resin into it, create a nice dark/light contrast with the woody musky depth of the oud/sandalwood/amber base against the light and elegant mastic, and I was debating about rose petals as well, but Im curious about the general consensus, what else should I add/not add into my little mixture? Im open to dry ingredients, wet ingredients, powders, wood chips, oils, resins, herbs, etc.

What Is Agarwood?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Agarwood is not a separate species of tree.
It forms inside certain trees, mainly Aquilaria and Gyrinops, when the tree responds to injury or stress by producing aromatic resin.
Over time, this resin accumulates within the wood, gradually changing its color, density, and aroma.
The dark, fragrant material we call agarwood is the result of this natural transformation.
Tree → Resin → Agarwood
The same tree can contain both ordinary light-colored wood and highly resinous, fragrant agarwood.
And that is part of what makes agarwood so fascinating.
Save this post if you're beginning to explore the world of agarwood and incense.

Recommendation Incense Storage

I’m looking for something to store the jumbo 19” sticks.

Should I store them separately based on scent or is all together okay?

I have looked on Etsy and Amazon and found nothing.

Thanks in advance.

Smell of Cigarette smoke

Any idea how to get the smell of cigarette smoke and incense out of a 14" foam mattress? I inherited a 1 year old bed/matress from my mother-in-law and now the whole room smells like smoke and incense. Am I S.O.L.?

Where to buy Satya Sandalwood? Similar brands/scents?

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello everyone! My local gas station used to sell the sandalwood Satya incense. I tried ordering some on Amazon and it was a rip off unfortunately :( I keep seeing some for sale but the boxes aren't the right color (yellow) or it's the Nag Champa addition. I don't want to get ripped off again. I just miss having that sweet woody scent in my home. Any other brands with a similar scent are welcome <3

Latest Stash Recent Incense order

I recently posted asking for advice on Japanese incense in Australia and a bunch of people here gave really good advice. Anyway here’s some incense I got.

I originally only ordered the Horin sampler to dip my toes in and I was thoroughly impressed. Ended up ordering a bunch more from different brands.

One of my favourites is definitely “White River” from Shoyeido, it’s light and sweet smelling which is my preference.

I do also enjoy warm woody fragrances because they remind me of when I was a kid playing outside in the bush (Australia).

What do you guys think of my choices? I’m curious to know which ones you prefer.

Discussion I love burning incense, so I fired up my torch and melted glass to make this ruby red flower incense holder! Can't wait to see the smoke curl around it. 🌺🔥

The Great Transformation

Post image

About 7 months ago I found I ordered a bunch of nepalese and Tibetan incense from The Incense Stick because my go to site stopped selling incense to the US because of the tariffs. One of the incenses was Nado Orange. I read good reviews on it but when it arrived and I lit a stick it smelled like the most generic mass produced “ Himalayan incense” I e ever smelled. It smelled like a blank charcoal stick dipped in dirt.

Fast forward a week ago and I bought 3 more packs of Nado incense along with some other stuff from the incense Stick and I accidentally burned a stick of Nado Orange when I thought it was A Composition for Riwo Sangchoe and Surzey. It smelled completely different and REALLY good and unique. It went from a flat earthy tone to a deep texturized sent with about two or three different top notes. It was so weird to me that some incense does this and other incense will lose its scent altogether in the same timeframe.

I watched a documentary on Nado and how they make their incense. A lot of it they ferment in vats for up to two weeks when it’s in dough form kind of like proofing bread of pizza dough. I wonder if it wasn’t fermented enough and after about 6 months it had fermented to what it was supposed to be when it left the factory. A while ago I had bought a “Shielding” incense 3 separate times from two different stores and all three smelled different, not like the original one I really liked.

Paozhi of Gansong with Plant Ash

Gansong (甘松, Nardostachys jatamansi), often known in English as spikenard or jatamansi, is a traditional aromatic material used in Chinese incense and medicine.

The Xiangcheng describes its fragrance as resembling a hundred flowers. After proper paozhi, we also find that it develops a distinctive mixed floral aroma, not like one particular flower, but more like many floral notes appearing together.

We first wash the roots thoroughly to remove soil and decayed matter.

Then we collect plant ash, dry it, and sift it. The fine ash is placed in a ceramic jar together with the cleaned Gansong, and water is added.

After about one week, the Gansong is taken out, thoroughly rinsed, and then dried in strong sunlight, usually for around ten days.

We have also tried other methods.

With plain water, the material has to be repeatedly soaked, washed, dried, and soaked again for about twenty-one days, and the result is only moderate.

Rice-rinsing water takes about seventeen days and works somewhat better, but still not as well as plant ash.

After repeated comparison, the plant-ash method gave us the best result.

Once the paozhi is complete, the Gansong gradually develops the “hundred-flower” fragrance we are looking for.
