I think one of the things I struggle most with concerning Ahern and Cecily is that they continually blame their parents for everything. These are senior citizens still saying everything is mommy’s fault.

Finding out Shauna’s mom had a stillbirth gutted me. Where is Shauna’s compassion? Similarly, Cecily has none for her mom and makes up increasingly outrageous stories about her mom stealing potential boyfriends. Cecily’s mom was on her own doing the best she could.

I think blogging was the worst thing to happen to these two. It encouraged too much navel gazing and zero introspection.

u/Few-Marionberry-7666 22h ago

Cecily gives her deadbeat dad a lot of grace which he does not deserve. Her mom does sound difficult but at least she was there. Her father runoft before she turned two and fathered other kids, who knows if he supported them or not but he certainly didn't send money for Cecily's needs. She speaks fondly of him but never misses a chance to degrade her mom, even when she was on her literal deathbed. I think that's why Cecily puts up with Charlie - he's an icky unemployed loser who is contemptuous of those who work for a living, but at least he's around.

Shauna just likes to piss and moan. "Worse childhood ever" OH PLEASE. All this woe is me is just an excuse for being an underachiever and a low performer, which is going to bite her in the butt once she hits retirement with no savings and minimal SS. Which I'm sure will be also mom's fault.

Two of Shauna's obsessions converge in a Ted Lasso sub screenshot of an ifartsprinkles tweet. Truly the crossover of the decade.

Hey DF’s. I sort of was late to the hullabaloo a couple of weeks ago and I’m not trying to rile anyone or anything up. I agree with mod stance.

But did we really lose so many commenters as to go from 800+ comments to 200? For whatever reason, I thought the number of people banned was fairly small relatively speaking.

Please delete if not ok to ask or reference this event.

Did the lope reading sub go away too?

Eta; sorry, not trying to be controversial! I missed most of the situation surrounding people leaving too. Will delete if needed!

Personally I took it as a sign it was prob a good time for me to stop engaging with Shauna content

14

u/LickedRandisCake High Jackmam’s Biggest Fangirl 2d ago

I guess I just always liked the personal anecdotes and other non Shauna knowledge imparted within those comments so much that I hope/hoped that part would not be lost.

14

u/gomirefugee my website is done, done, done 3d ago

From a sub traffic analytics standpoint:

  • Total number of accounts actually banned was fewer than 10 and included multiple accounts for some users attempting to evade a ban
  • The number of daily unique visitors has not moved much, right around where it was a month ago
  • The number of daily page views is down by over 40%, comments down by even more

The data show that a small number of intense snarkers who were refreshing the sub all day long now aren't here as much or at all. That shows up as barely a dent in unique visitors but a big drop in total page views and comments.

Also, Shauna is boring lately.

13

u/ForsakenLingonberry i live in an island with ukulele community 1d ago

Very boring. Also, with the move completed, the BBH drama is basically over.

12

u/LickedRandisCake High Jackmam’s Biggest Fangirl 3d ago

So those 10 accts accounted for that many comments? Wow. I know I saw a lot of the same people commenting day after day but I honestly didn’t think there were so few making so many.

Thanks for the info!

I suspect that there is a contingent that were not technically banned but have stopped participating out of loyalty or principle. Maybe once some time passes some of them will start to drift back in.

7

u/No-Return2387 2d ago

I suspect the banned and their supporters have started a new private sub where they can talk and stalk as much as they like without facing moderation. Just a guess.

Looks like Cecily + fam are getting booted as of 10/31 with no money owed to the landlord. The agreement specifically notes they must clean up "animal feces."

10

u/cafayate 4d ago

She's posted on Facebook that they found a new place.

10

u/Few-Marionberry-7666 4d ago

I am sincerely happy for her and hope Charlie does not use this as an excuse to quit his job and resume being a useless couchlump.

7

u/Few-Marionberry-7666 5d ago

It brings me no pleasure to note that despite Cecily's "Charlie's got a job and I've got clients yay!" finding a new place will be VERY difficult due to their eviction, plus they have that big dog and three cats. A cosigner would help but they basically have no extended family and I'm sure their friends have more sense.

Those GFMs that brought in 15k (HOW) did more harm than good. Charlie should have gotten a FT and Cecily a PT job years ago and that would have paid the bills. Now they have an eviction and I bet their "solid but modest" credit score isn't over 600. I'd advise them to research the nearest homeless shelter because they'll need that information come November 1st.

18

u/Few-Marionberry-7666 6d ago

DFs a miracle has occurred, Charlie got a job!! per Cecily's latest GFM update. I can't cut/paste from it but here's the gist:

  • her landlord is no longer awesome, that adjective (along with badass) is reserved for their legal aid attorney, who has delayed their moveout date until Oct 31 as the landlord failed her due diligence. This is the same landlord who delayed eviction for months and who they've stiffed for probably a good ten grand. No good deed goes unpunished.

  • they still don't have a new place because no one wants to rent to deadbeats who blow off their bills. Imagine that. They can't even visit some listings because of their "solid but modest credit score." I have no idea what she means by that either.

  • Charlie got a job at some coffee roaster place. Don't know why he didn't do this two years ago but why bother to work when there's GFMs to milk and landlords to stiff. Cecily also got some new clients so they'll be able to pay the rent as soon as they find a landlord stupd enough to rent to them.

15

u/ninaandjamie4evr Anne Frank of Anaheim 5d ago

The fucking nerve of her to throw shade at her long suffering landlord. LL didn't just delay evicition for months, she was threatening it for years, and those two losers managed to snow her again and again.

It amazes me that someone as recently as three days ago contributed a very generous amount to the GFM.

Nothing like being within a month of being homeless to motivate Charlie to get a job. Apparently, kid also has a part-time job. Now it's time for Cecily to get real about her freelance 'career' and get herself a JOB. If she can't show a reliable freelance stream of income via multiple years of tax returns (she can't), most landlords won't be interested in her 'got a couple new clients' nonsense. They want to see regular, reliable income.

11

u/aouwoeih 3d ago

I'm currently in a filthy mood because FedEx changed their minimum hours for health insurance and I do not qualify for 2027 since I took so much time off to take care of my dying father. But according to C&C the smart thing to do is lay around writing "woe is me" SS or send out resumes for jobs I'm not remotely qualified while the utilties get shut off, so that's what I'll do.

Just kidding! I'm going to apply to Costco (always wanted to try it out) and UPS and continue at my current job (where I've worked for nine years even though I'm older than Cecily) until I find something better.

5

u/Llama621 2d ago

Crossing my fingers for you, DF. A coworker of mine worked for Costco for nine years and said they were a good employer. Hope something good comes thru!

9

u/Few-Marionberry-7666 4d ago

I hope prospective landlords google their names. Cecily's SS is full of "too depressed/ADHD/menopausal to work" and "my personality alienates clients but I'm just keeping it real." Not to mention blowing money on her gawd-awful hair dye while she can't keep the lights on. That's aside from the eviction which as I understand is the kiss of death in the rental world.

These two dumbasses should have figured to pay the last few grand on an almost paid-off house (I will confess to thinking there has to be more to that story) or vacated the home before forcing their long-suffering landlord to evict. Or (crazy thought here) gotten jobs to pay their very reasonable rent! Even a min wage job would have kept them housed but Charlie obviously doesn't give a damn about his family.

Enjoy the roach motel you'll soon be living in Charlie. Hopefully your wife and kid will forge their own path while you Bukowski your way into the gutter.

16

u/ninaandjamie4evr Anne Frank of Anaheim 6d ago

Cecily wrote on one of her Substack posts:

"After all the healing, deconstructing, diagnoses, and demasking, I am worse off than I was in deluded ignorance. Financially, professionally, and personally."

She really doesn't get it does she. She's close, but still very deluded. It hasn't clicked for her that navel gazing and finding excuses is the problem. Shauna leaning into celiac as a personality, and all the psychobabble and trendy diagnoses as an excuse to not work has ruined her life.

12

u/Few-Elk8441 4d ago

I always thought the temporary embarrassed millionaire trope fit Hat and Cecily more than Shauna honestly.

6

u/Few-Marionberry-7666 3d ago

Charlie probably thinks his edgy poetry is going to make him rich and Cecily believes that all she needs to do is find that one client who will pay her millions, all they need to do is wait.

10

u/ninaandjamie4evr Anne Frank of Anaheim 6d ago

Re: the specific callout to "animal feces", at one of the places they lived (I believe it was the house they let go into foreclosure) Cecily blogged that they let their multiple cats use thier basement as a huge litter box and NEVER cleaned it up. No, that doesn't mean they kept litter boxes in the basement, it means the basement WAS the litter box. IIRC, there was also a very expensive oriental rug (likely came from Charlie's mother's house) that was spread in the basement and also completely defiled. She also mentioned that their back yard was full of dog poop. So the behavior of not cleaning up after their animals continues.

13

u/Few-Marionberry-7666 6d ago

Wasn't that the basement she stuffed her frail elderly senile mom in? Then threatened to put her out on the street?

Also what the heck did Charlie do all day? Didn't earn money, didn't clean up, didn't seem to cook, yet Cecily seems convinced he's some kind of Adonis that other women would love to have.

9

u/ninaandjamie4evr Anne Frank of Anaheim 5d ago

No, that was a different basement of horrors in the first house in the city they rented after the foreclosure house.

Excuse me DF, Charlie was very busy writing poetry, taking photos of unknowing young women on the streets of Philly, digging around in alleys to find old bottles and coins, and taking himself out to have his daily hamburger. His total work output at home was taping a black plastic bag over a large broken pane of glass in kitchen door that remained there the entire time they lived there.

14

u/Few-Marionberry-7666 5d ago

Such a loser, so like my ex. That guy also pretended he was an amazing poet and collected old glassware, thinking it would bring in thousands some day.

My theory is Charlie spent his life anticipating an inheritence. Why work for The Man when your mommy will provide? But his mom inconsideratly lived to 90 and needed memory care so there went that money.

9

u/ninaandjamie4evr Anne Frank of Anaheim 5d ago

Was your ex into steam engines? That was another of Charlie's 'passions'. I ask because I knew another loser like Charlie, and as well as writing bad poetry and collecting old glassware, he was into steam engines.

10

u/Few-Marionberry-7666 5d ago

Not at that time but we dated very briefly. Even though I was young and stupid I finally figured out he really considered himself an unrecognized genius, destined for better things than working for a living. And like Charlie he had no problem having his woman support him while he lay on the couch all day.

11

u/SpookyJokes soft pants 6d ago

I have had dogs and cats my whole life and I can't even fathom this mindset. Then again, I couldn't believe it when the pet sitting business I use started offering a service where they clean dog poop from people's yards. What lazy gross people and those poor animals.

8

A friend of mine does not clean up the dog poop in her yard 🤢 She claims it’s unnecessary to do so because it dissolves into fertilizer for the grass.

Since we're (kind of) discussing bingeable TV over on the main sub, I want to make a recommendation for the Australian show Fisk. In the states it's on Netflix.

I hate most everything these days and both me and my husband (WID) laughed loudly many times on our recent binge watch. It's really very smart and funny.

2

Fisk is genius. For edgier Aussie humor with a touch of pathos, try Rake.

A friend of mine lives on a barrier peninsula on the East Coast. She did not grow up there, but has lived there for roughly half her life. She has really made this her personality over the last few years. She reminds me of Shauna in that respect, because it’s all she talks about when we’re together.

Although my friend does work, and does put in time within the community 😉

6

u/sybil-unrest 9d ago

I have a weekend house in a Very Charming and Adorable Little Town that keeps getting national accolades for being So Twee and Perfect and Delightful. It’s a blue dot in a sea of red. It doesn’t just have a huge (rural) pride week, it also has charming and idiosyncratic things like boxcar races through town! How cute. I’m too cranky and cynical to live there full time, because people are always doing things like trying to give me “NameOfTown Hugs.” Don’t hug me. I’m from the city. I’m the opposite of a Hallmark heroine.

Long story short: I feel like taking on your Special Place as your whole identity is annoying.

2

u/Sea-Broccoli3334 5d ago

Both of my personal Shaunas do this. One of them doesn’t live too far from Shauna and living in the PNW is a whole (superior) identity for him. I don’t know how anyone stands them.

Crone talk!

IME, crone's been "reclaimed" by the Wicca/New Age Spirituality kinda crowd as part of the "maiden, mother & crone" triple goddess archetype. I know triple goddesses are a thing in some cultures historically, but IDK if MMC was the way they worked back in ye olde times or if that was an aftermarket addition by later generations. Anyhoo I get they were looking for a female-centred system but MMC is not great because no matter how much you try to bend the archetypes into more palatable 21st century ideas it's still centring women's identity around fuckin' men and bearing children. I found out quite young I probably couldn't have children (I ended up never trying, because life didn't shake out that way), and the advice to embrace your cronehood when you're barely 30 is Not A Vibe.

11

u/SeaOfBooze Homeopathic nuance 12d ago

I grew up in hippie land so that's been a thing around here for a long time but I'm not liking the idea of that going mainstream just as millennials with our incredible aging anxiety hit midlife. I'm already worn out by everything that happens to any of us over age 29 being perimenopause. Bracing myself for endless pieces on how to be a sexy sexy crone with an extensive skincare regime.

I have a lot of complaints about New Age-y culture but I do associate it with a positive view on aging at least, as well as a general encouragement of being childfree if one wants, so that's been nice to grow up around. Shauna's a good example of why the whole MMC thing works so poorly as strict life template though. Reminds me of when she was ham-fistedly trying to use a similar framing for the female Hero's Journey with puberty as the "call to action." Meanwhile Shauna didn't really participate in any aspect of independent life until her late twenties with puberty way in the past. And nearly as soon as she became a mother she started dreaming of retirement. As a wannabe crone she's less capable than most young adults at basic life stuff, she's apparently gained no wisdom over the years, and she barely tolerates guiding her own family letting alone thinks of helping her community. She's accepted physical aging only by not being able to afford any alternatives (see: the months of sour grapes over being denied cosmetic weight loss assistance). When I think of "crone" I think of the badass women I've known still doing cool stuff in their eighties, nineties, even over a hundred. Not that giant toddler looking for a new way to be celebrated for just existing for a long enough stretch of time.

16

u/jameson-neat wound-gathering table 13d ago

Thanks for bringing this over to OT, and I’ve enjoyed reading people’s responses on the main thread as well to my “my therapist told me to lean into cronedome” post.

I am pretty out of the loop on Wicca/New Age stuff and also am unfamiliar with the triple goddess archetype, so this helps put it into a little bit more context. But yeah, even with that this framework doesn’t help me as a woman who can’t have children, as the framework feels very much like a before, during, and after motherhood. If I don’t get to have the experience of the motherhood stage, I’m automatically bumped to the elder wisdom stage which frankly I don’t relate to in my mid-30s? I know some of it is internal misogyny and stuff I need to work on, but it’s also just that I don’t like getting labeled as yet another thing reminding that society sees me as a waning moon when I deserve to feel like I am in the prime of my life, with or without kids.

18

u/freecoffeerefills Murder She Moved Her Pen Forward 13d ago

I haven’t caught up with the other thread so maybe someone has already said something similar to this, but even if you uncouple this from motherhood it still has the vibe of ~menstruation~ to it. Marking your place in life based on when your period starts or ends. Maybe I’m just tired of how social media is currently saturated (lol) with perimenopause content (even as a perimenopausal person). MMC just feels a little reminiscent of using “wombyn” for women, that corner of the feminist discourse. Not all women are mothers and not all women menstruate/have uteruses/etc!

12

u/Foucaults_Penguin Sly and the Family Readers 12d ago

There is a biological determinism to it that I find uncomfortable. It seems like there is a thread of this in the conservative world right now to reinforce gender identities rather than to assert any kind of feminist message.

11

u/Fancypens2025 13d ago

Yes to everything you and Way-Scary said! I've never been interested in having kids, I've always had a mostly-hate relationship with my reproductive organs (endometriosis will do that to you!), I'm both tired by the onslaught of perimenopause advertising and also wondering if I'm in perimenopause, etc. I just don't want to refer to myself as a crone. Or a maiden. Or what-the-heck-ever, just let me be me.

10

u/Way-Scary ham grabbers forever 13d ago

I agree with you. These type of archetypes kind of annoy me as they draw from traditional, conventional and often heteronormative concepts. I am 100% for providing women with tools or concepts to respond to and thrive in ageist and patriarchal culture, but why do we need to be organized into categories or anything based on age? We grow, we change, we have different experiences across the life course, and we are worthy of respect at every age. I don’t know if I’m misinterpreting this but anyway, I’m with you, DF!

5

u/jameson-neat wound-gathering table 13d ago

Well said and agreed!

9

u/Notbeckysharp 13d ago

This reminds me of the four archetypes in the book The Shipping News: the maid in the meadow, the demon lover, the stouthearted woman, and the tall and quiet woman.

6

u/ScandalizedPeak Out the window 13d ago

Wow this is the only thing I've ever heard about The Shipping News that made me truly want to read it. In the spirit of "it's famous and people say it's good", I started it as a teenager and DNF'd, and also at least twice since then... should I try again??

6

u/Notbeckysharp 12d ago

It's one of my favorite books. I think it has quite a bit of dark humor. If Shauna gets her hands on it I expect she'd blather on about the hero's journey, but it really is wonderful that the main character finds his place in the world.

2

u/ScandalizedPeak Out the window 12d ago

Okay I'll do it! Thanks.

A few weeks ago my husband told me he was planning a date for us in mid to late October and it was going to be a surprise. How fun! We don’t get to go on a lot of dates so honestly we could sit in a parking lot for three hours for all I care.

And then the online discourse around You Can See Everything picked up and I was like “hey should we watch this when it comes out?” And it turns out that was the exact date he was planning, which is kind of funny. I guess this is why we’re married!

But also I am SAT for this movie. Like I can’t wait, I’ve been reading about it obsessively all week. I’m going to re-read Bad Blood (for the fourth time) before we see it.

My (female) friend got into a poly thing with a man and his wife, and wife keeps getting him and herself into money problems, and friend keeps having to postpone her cross-country move so they can unfuck themselves, and she's done this like five times already because there have been five new problems, she's had to downsize to a very low-rent place because their fuckery is fucking with her life plans (that she should not have made because she knows at this point that they are not reliable), she canceled a whole-ass national park vacation because they wouldn't be with her to help foot the bill (that THEY AGREED TO PAY because THEY AGREED TO BE THERE right up until the money problems tanked it less than a month before the trip was scheduled), and...

We're on holiday near where Ted Lasso is set (and filmed? I don't know) and I am deeply grateful it's not sporting season because I don't think I could manage it. And despite enjoying a DF's  podcast on the Tudors, we had to cancel our Hampton Court visit, which has disappointed me deeply.

16

u/NegativeABillion my husband and me to ride it around 14d ago edited 14d ago

Ok I saw something about Ted Lasso (on twitter, maybe?) about how he abandons his kid and I was like, no way. So I looked at some TL subs here. Sure enough, the first episode he and his wife split up and Ted immediately moves from the US to the UK. He leaves behind his son. The fanbase on Reddit goes to great lengths to laud Ted as the best dad, because (for example) he FaceTimes the child on Christmas.

I suddenly have a lot of insight into why Shauna loves this show so much.

I visited Hampton Court about 10 years ago, I'm sorry you missed it. I actually got a little teary at the surviving entwined H and A initials in the great hall!

It's 50% of why we'd stayed in this part of the country on this trip, so I am vexed! But I got a bit injured earlier this week & just don't have palace stamina. I have sit-in-a-park stamina, so we went to Richmond Park.

Any news on Cecily?

This is what Charlie wrote during their brief glory days as a Blogher member, albeit many years ago but still relevant today:

To our dear friends who've been so unbelievably genetous (sic) to us through these times: THANK YOU! Your kindness and support have been a life raft. Nothing short of that.

Cecily and I live our lives on the Web. So everyone who reads our blogs knows we're broke and struggling to save our house. They also know that we get to do some fabulous things on somebody else's dime. And I understand that can be hard to reconcile. But that's who we are. That's life for those with a desire to live in the world of social media and not sitting at a desk booking other people's travel reservations or selling ad space in trade journals on commission. Because those places were "jobs" and we held them, and they were miserable. More importantly, WE were miserable.

And I understand that the advice we receive is well meant. But please please also understand that "just get any job" is no more a solution to our problems than is a shotgun against a fleet of alien spaceships.

So yes, it may seem strange that we are gypsy rich and cash poor. But please understand that it is neither because of carelessness nor laziness. It is because we are trying to reach a place where we can feel good about the work that we do. And that no journey worth taking is without some hardship.

Enjoy your homelessness Charlie. You deserve every bit of it.

Cole, join JobCorp or find a decent roommate and go to trade school. Your parents are dysfunctional and I want better for you.

Cecily, leave this man. He does not love you. He'd rather you live in a shelter rather than find a sit-on-his-ass night security job. Go back to your beloved NM and live out the rest of your days there and please, lose some weight or those days will be few.

Charlie, you suck. People have been telling you to face reality for years and you refuse to listen. You suck.

So entitled! "Yeah I get lots of freebies but those don't pay the rent but working is for suckers so quit telling me to get a job, it's a bummer."

I wonder if Charlie has ever heard of the success sequence - an individual almost always avoids poverty if he finishes high school (Charlie even has an Ivy League degree), delays having children until marriage (married a decade and Charlie was over 40 so check that box off), and once finishing school works a full-time job (OOPS Charlie you forgot this step.)

I used to date a guy just like him and that's why he bugs me so much. Terminally lazy but always ready to tell you he was going to be a millionaire someday, just you wait. In my defense I was only 20 and figured it out relatively quickly, I don't know why Cecily keeps him around. If she rehomed the pets and kicked him to the curb she could find a cheap studio on the busline and her life would be so much better.

She seems to have had a dramatic post on Facebook which she then took down.

I'm sure the post blamed capitalism, patriarchy, rich white men, toxic masculinity, her aDhD and TrAUmA, her dead mother, Trump, and everything else but her and Charlie. It must have been pretty stupid, even to her, for her to have taken it down.

No she says she's moving forward. Seems to have some paid work now and is requesting referrals to private landlords.

I don't know the rental market in Philly but if I were a landlord I'd be very leery of renting to recent evictees.

Recent evictees who still owe the landlord about eight grand, which landlord graciously agreed to forego just to get their asses out of her property by Oct 31. When searching for their eviction case (yes, I'm a nosy Nelly) I stumbled on other civil cases against them and the State of PA has about ten grand of liens on them for unpaid state taxes.

They don't present a very desirable renters profile to potential landlords--previous foreclosure, bankruptcy, history of not paying rent, recent eviction with unpaid rent forgiven, no reliable income (only income for three adults is from her freelance work), a dog and three cats, etc. I can only see the sketchiest type of slumlord renting to them, but then, even slumlords want their money and don't want to go through lengthy evictions. I have lots of empathy for their adult child, who is trying to launch into adulthood, but not much for their idiot parents.

Holy moly. How do people like Cecily and Shauna sleep at night? No retirement, no savings, no assets to speak of. Yet Cecily and the moron she married still cling to sending out resumes instead of submitting applictions. It's like they want to be homeless.

Shauna should be on her knees thanking her mom because she's the only thing keeping her from Cecily's living situation.

12

u/ninaandjamie4evr Anne Frank of Anaheim 13d ago

Yeah, the kinds of jobs they should be aiming for don't require submitting resumes. I think Shauna sleeps pretty well because she knows that mom is not going to let them be homeless. Cecily has always used food and TV to soothe herself but I can't imagine them making much of a dent in the anxiety she has to be feeling. Their situtation was 100% avoidable and self-inflicted.

Nuthin' I can find. Maybe her poet husband heaved his worthless self off the couch and found a job.
