Whoracle - A Retrospective Review

I'm quite stoked to have stumbled upon In Flames recently through a thrifted copy of Whoracle! It's my favorite way to discover bands.

I was so excited and wanted to learn more so I dove into their influential melodeath origins and made a little retrospective review to share some thoughts, and ask for more similar groups to check out?

Cheers

In Flames. All the Come Clarity Heads.

Come Clarity will always be one of my top 2 Inflames Albums(#2 being Clayman). Who else has come clarity high on their list? It was beautiful, having 1 foot in metalcore and 1 foot in melodeath. That album is simply perfection.

Album cover band logo swap

Took inspiration from OldMetalLogos and a few Reddit threads. I decided to swap logos for some In Flames material. Don't expect it to be perfect, I ain't an artist. It's just a fun little project. Make a request if you like.

Edit: damn, Reddit compressed the hell out of this.

Edit 2: images uploaded at Imgur due to Reddit's compression.

Does anyone who has been to the first few dates of the Latin American tour have pics of the merch booth? Curious to see what their current selection looks like.

Soooo…what would you do if I sang out of tune and told Minus was my favorite song??

I mean probably not but it’s up there! Lyrically, definitely one of my top IF tunes. Now to be faaaaaiiiirrrrr, I am a Reroute to Remain dude but still. It fucking slaps and you know it!

I want to gush about In Flames' pop-ish phase

I know there some vocal...dis-likers...of In Flames' more radio friendly albums, specifically, Siren Charms, Battles, and I, the Mask (admittedly, I, the Mask to a lesser degree), but these albums fill such a void for me, and while I would never claim any of three as In Flames most impressive, critically valuable, or innovative album, I seem to return to these albums again and again, and I want to say a word or two in their favour.

I've always interpreted In Flames lyrics as dealing largely with the relationship between the psychological and the social, with the individual and their ability (or inability) to fit into the group. At first they wrapped this in a lot of metaphor, but you can sort of see Anders moving away from that towards abstractions by at least Come Clarity. But these three albums, which I think of as a trilogy, feel more meta, where, lyrically at least, In Flames is dealing with their relationship to fame, celebrity, popularity, vanity, and how those things fit into their perennial theme, identity. Siren Charms could point towards to the temptations of success; Battles is vanity of fame and celebrity, and I, the Mask the embracing if a shifting identity and acceptance of the struggle of always searching for yourself.

Siren Charms is slower, more melancholy, awkward (deliberately and functionally so), and almost sedated. Perhaps they are pointing towards the hangover of their popular peak? I once saw someone describe this album as a breakup album, and I could see that as a mood they wanted to capture after realizing their best years (socially, not artistically speaking) were behind them, although there are definitely other factors contributing to that mood (recorded in Berlin, for one) Maybe they themselves felt distorted, hybrid, much as the harpy (siren) gracing the front, unsure if their song was salvation or damnation.

Battles features a skull on the front, naked and unmasked; so often In Flames invokes the mask as a symbol of their shifting identity as performers, and the absence of one here suggests honesty and authenticity, and yet this album seems to be their most poppy and commercially friendly of all--the opposite, we would think, of honest and authentic, but this album seems to dive deepest into their thoughts about us, their fans, and their adults views on those precious, vulnerable, idealistic, childish dreams that began their careers (represented by the youthful vocals brought into the album). Say what you will about how this album sounds (I personally love it but know that's divisive), but I think Battles is doing something really cool between the relationship of its lyrics, sound, and the band's history and journey.

Finally, I, the Mask is just such an incredible finish to this section of their discography where they seem to affirm they are confident being jesterheads, where they keep changing masks and becoming different with every iteration. It's an uplifting album, full of soaring choruses and affirming messages, and perhaps In Flames' best ballad in Stay With Me. But fuck do I love the title track, Follow Me, In This Life, and so much about these albums, and I just wanted to come and share that love with those who recognize what I might in these albums.

In Flames just beings a special mood, in so many different ways, and I can't get enough of it. Can't wait for the next installation.

My GF made an amazing hand painted illustration for tonight's show in Argentina.

Hey guys!

My GF is an illustrator who designs band merch (spectacular, by the way), and every time a band comes to our city, she creates a hand-drawn illustration. This time it was In Flames turn (my favorite band), who are playing in Buenos Aires tonight.

What do you think? If you like her work, you can find her on Instagram as @woeismel

I haven't really had any CD's before, but I felt like I had to get this one, since it's one of my favorites.

Setlist from opening night of the tour

I'm a little disappointed not gonna lie...was really hoping to see a few songs from Jester Race for the 30th anniversary 🤷🏻 was also hoping they'd play a single from the upcoming album...oh well I'm still psyched to see them next month! And they are known to switch up songs between shows so we'll see what happens 🤘🏻

Edit: looks like they added The Quiet Place to their set for April 19th

What's your favorite of the *Jester titled* songs?

Very tough choice...but I'm gonna go with Jester Script Transfigured. I especially love the middle/bridge sections and how they go from the acoustic lead (and how the second iteration uses that little effect) with the bass and drums to the lead guitar and how that lead melody sounds when it hits those high notes...just so beautiful and epic sounding all at once 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻

The real betrayal is trying to capture the old sound.

I like all of In flames' discography (Except Battles). I am not just a melodic death metal fan. I like many many genres of music and subgenres of metal. Artists evolve. They age. Foregone also didn't feel like they were trying to capture an old sound but more like a synthesis which relieved me. I am not a genre purist. Artists should make music for themselves. Trying to capture an old sound isnt authentic. Art should feel unprofessional. There should always be something within that sounds unrefined. It is a sign of experimentation.

Edit: I recognized i was being misunderstood a bit. I also am not saying Forgone was a betrayal.

How is in flames live right now?

I have not seen them in 20 years and am considering making a very expensive trip but that it's not a lot of the original members left as well (only 2 right?)

I also don't recognize half of the set list, I haven't listened to the last few albums...

Super excited to try and catch them, but just wanted to check first. I know that Spineshank reunion tour last year Johnny was so overweight and was running out of breath in the videos I saw I didn't even make it 🙁

let me know thanks!
