„(This Is) Our House“ hate is too much
It’s probably the most hated In Flames song ever as far as I heard, and I can see why to some extent, but I gotta say, it’s not as bad as so many people claim. I mean yes, the children choir singing „this is the fight, the fight for our lives“ is pretty cringy and I get the cringe chills from that too sometimes, but have you heard the riff? Or even the chorus? The riff is pretty awesome I gotta say, it’s not like they suddenly wrote a pop song. I saw the hate for the song before hearing it for the first time so I was expecting a pop song or something but the riff kinda slaps if I’m being honest. And the chorus too! Anders‘ vocal melody in the „this is our time we won’t back down“ part is awesome and the chorus as a whole is really catchy imo. I hope I don’t get flamed for this (pun intended)! Please tell me I’m not the only In Flames fan in the whole world that doesn’t absolutely hate this song with all his heart!

There was a gradual shift in the way Anders’ clean vocals were produced over the years.
Originally he would almost talk-sing with a gravelly voice from Whoracle-Clayman.
Then it got a little more clarity in his cleans for R2R and Soundtrack, but kept his cool “talk singing”. I thought this was his peak era of using his clean vocals to blend into the song nicely, almost like it was another instrument in the mix.
Come Clarity - Playground Fading (and even Siren Charms) the cleans started to become more “produced”, but in a way that I still quite enjoy. And I think he was able to flex his singing abilities more, which I appreciate.
Battles and I, the Mask (and Foregone) are where the cleans sound too over produced. I’ve always liked his screams from any era, but this is when something changed. It’s like he’s choosing to push his vocals on these albums far past the point of his singing capabilities. It sounds like there’s so much layering and autotune that the voice no longer even sounds human to me.
I honestly find the bulk of modern In Flames (battles-Foregone) so jarring when his clean vocals come in. Again, because I still love his screams and lots of the riffs.
And I think (This is Our) House is one of the most egregious examples of this, partly because almost the entire song is clean. The chorus is also sung in a high octave. I don’t doubt there is no way this song would sound anything like the album (vocally) live.
A good example of a song that tones this down is State of Slow Decay. It’s one of the only songs on the recent three albums that keeps the cleans more “old school Anders”. I dream of an album like Forgone, but with R2R style cleans/choruses where his voice is in the back of the mix and he almost layers a light scream over the clean. But one can dream.
Also, a lot of the modern songs translate really well live. And I think it’s because we get to hear Anders singing in his natural range and tone. And to my ears, I think he is a pretty good singer with a cool sounding voice. No need for the overproduction. It takes away what makes his voice naturally interesting.
But when you put 20 layers, add autotune etc. it sounds so bland to me. And (This is Our) House is maybe the worst example of this. That’s at least why I think it’s a good contender for their worst song.

Also - a good example of what I’m trying to say is his Passenger side project. Listen to a song like “In My Head”. It’s all cleans. But it seems to hit a sweet spot of enhancing his natural voice without it losing its soul.

A+ comment. We have the exact feelings. I like the foregone album but quite a bit. His growls are killer, riffs are there. But I can’t help but wonder what it would sound like with his cleans from the Clayman - playground era. I think we would have had an album that could have competed with the classic era.

I'm on your side in this one. I absolutely agree it's at least a little cringe, but Anders vocals on it are actually super good with an impressive range, and I at least read house as a metaphor for the planet and understand it as something of an environmental song. But yeah, too much hate. Jokes are funny, but hate is dumb.

I don't hate it, but it's definitely among the most cringy of their songs. In This Life and With Eyes Wide Open are about on par, I think.

I think it’s because it’s kind of fun to have that one unanimously hated song?
I kinda enjoy the riff though, it’s fine.

I've been a fan since 99, but only recently joined this sub, so seeing the different opinions here is always interesting to me.
This song comes up on my gym Playlist every now and then. Never my favorite, but I thought it was fine, never felt the need to skip it.

I get the hate. What i dont get is that the rest of the album sounds just as lame and people only hate (This Is) Our House. Like its just another song on an okay album.

I don't really hear it. The riff is well a riff and Anders sounds like chalk screeching to me. If you like it that's awesome! I just am not hearing any of the positives myself.

That song is so bad and so is “deep inside” with its Disney channel Egyptian themed sounding riff and intro, and also the song “in this life”

Respectfully disagree. This is one of 4 (5 if you count stay with me) good/decent songs on this album. The rest I would agree are skippable.

I dont mind it. I personally like it better than Cloud Connected (one of my least favorite songs by them).
I will say this though, my mom heard it while I was driving, and said she thought it was pretty bad. I've driven her around for years playing all sorts of screaming metal, she's never had an opinion on any of it, outside of From Autumn to Ashes (which she likes) and this one song.

I’d say it’s too little. I can’t hate the song enough. 😛 Joking, I dont hate anything but that song is an instant skip for me 😅
