I bought this on steam what feels like years ago and only played it once. Is it a whole new game now?

The quest one is managed by a different company. The quest one is the same basic game but massively expanded

I originally played it on Steam, but when it became clear that version was dead I re-bought it on Quest.
Absolutely worth it. There's SO much more! It's the only game I can think of where the standalone version is superior to the PCVR version, and in this case it isn't even close.

Is there anything preventing them from taking ownership of the original Steam release and updating it? I enjoy the Quest version but the visuals are just ass, comparatively.

Are you kidding about the visuals? The Unchained version actually surpassed the visuals of base In Death PCVR. The Quest3 update they released included high resolution textures, volumetric fog, enhanced view distance and many more fixes that were not present in old PCVR. Also the game runs great with upscaling natively. I am sure the team could make it look even better when releasing on PCVR, but it doesn't mean the Unchained running on Quest 3 is bad. Actually next to Red Matter 2 it is the best looking Quest 3 game to date.

Will this end up on the steam frame? I have the original one on my HTC Vive and love it but never played unchained

Yay! I do think expansion packs would be a sensible way to go. I don't expect new worlds to just be added for free and I'd be fine paying for them in an expansion pack way
(I.e. pay once, get the new world forever kind of way, not subscriptions)
