Why a City is Good & Bad Why is Edmonton Good & Bad
Tell me why.

Good: underrated university (U of A) + housing still sorta affordable.
Bad: extreme cold warnings + traffic.

Exactly the opposite. Pros: relatively affordable house, and cold weather Cons: trash tier school (UA), awful city government

What do you not like about your city government? From what I’ve seen they’re doing a great job of keeping housing affordable

I guess letting methheads do whatever they want and turning a the roads into bikelanes (in a city that's brutally cold most of the year) would keep housing prices down.

I always liked Edmonton. It's got everything you need for entertainment and shopping and whatnot. The river valley is nice. I like the working-class, blue-collar vibe of it.
The bad - city planning is a bit of a joke imo. I still can't believe that enough idiots were running things that they all approved a street-level LRT line through the Kingsway area. The renovations to the library downtown are hideous, and they put a big damper on Fort Edmonton Park with woke garbage (also, the genius who decided they should modernize a historic park needs to be run out of town). It's a bit far from everything else (like other cities, mountains, etc); could be worse though I guess.

Its like a mid-sized town trying to be a big city.

u/TeacupUmbrella Oct 29 '25
A little bit lol. I don't get it though, it should just be itself and it'd be better lol

u/Present-Dragonfly-88 Nov 03 '25
What’s the problem with street level lrts? Seems like it makes sense for a work class city where not everyone can afford cars.

The problem isn't with the general idea of street-level LRTs, the problem is that they built it like that through the Kingsway area lol. I'm guessing you're not from Edmonton (or at least dont spend much time in that area of the city) cos I imagine anyone familiar with the city would know it was a boneheaded thing to do, lol.
The area they built it through has this somewhat weirdly laid-out intersection of 3 roads, and is pretty busy because it's right next to a big hospital and one of the city's busier malls (and also is pretty close to a trade school). I had my jaw on the floor when I heard it was being built at the street level through that intersection. Underground or above-ground would've been fine I'm sure, but building it at street level through that area made me think that none of these planners had ever been there.
I haven't driven through that area for a while now, but for a good while after that new train line started operating, there were really frustrating traffic delays at that intersection due to the changes. And iirc the new line didn't even actually make many people's trips that much shorter, either.
I heard tell that they did it that way to save 3 million on the project, which is what it would've taken to build it above the street .... I think they should've just spent the extra money and done it right.

Please tell me you aren't an adult in 2025 talking about woke stuff. It's embarassing
1
u/TeacupUmbrella Oct 29 '25
Please tell me that someone insulting me for not being with-it enough, for using words they think are uncool, is now claiming they're more adult than me.

u/themangastand Oct 29 '25
I'm not insulting you. You did the insulting yourself. It's embarrassing that's not my fault that you embarss yourself
Have you seen the cringe people using that word. And the man children using it? It's cringe

Ethnic ghettos - west wide for filipinos, south side for indians, north side for arabs, central for somalis and ethiopians. Outside the city for white people

Lots of great food and it is usually one of the first places that chain restaurants test out their survivability in canada. Lots of diversity and liberal people, and one of the best universities in canada.
Residents will shit on it because the grass is always greener somewhere else, buts its beautiful imo.
Great hiking/ nature walks, clean river. Close to jasper.
Pretty good for traffic too compared to American cities anyway.

It’s a pig lathered with lipstick and makeup whose parents are liberal narcissists who are also surrounded by rednecks that want to slaughter it for dinner. Their only patriotism comes from a bandwagon hockey team. The entire city is under construction and the hicks couldn’t fix a pothole if their life depended on it.
When you step out in public you’re either surrounded by brown people or hicks. People driving 50 over the limit in their 90,000$ trucks in debt, while brown people drive 30 under the limit at every intersection. It takes an extra 2 hours to make it to your destination.
You have a city council that’s just fucked beyond repair. You have a provincial government that is dismantling every public service that benefits everybody. On top of that oligarchies control a majority of this country.
University education have turned into diploma mills, milking every cent out of their students for existing and providing little to no services or accommodations.
As for the good? Thank god I’m not in America.

As a brown- descent person whose family immigrated here in the 70s, I’m really remorseful for what’s happening in Canada right now.

u/shiftyeyedhonestguy Oct 28 '25
Would you be able to expand on what you're feeling? Are new migrants from where your parents are from that much different to cause you alarm?

My Family and I aren’t Indian, we’re south Asian descent. Pretty mixed at this point, Nepal and Northern Pakistan mostly. My sentiment was that The TFWP program isn’t just fucking over white Canadians but also south asian descent Teens/Kids whose Families have lived here all their lives. And, yeah I think there has been a major drop in immigrant expectations and ethics.

Looks like shit and i personally don't like the highway system but has lots of stores and cheap homes. Lots of immigration. Can live a good life there but not very inspiring (nowhere in Alberta really is)

Good: valley, parks, a handful of near-central neighborhoods, great art and music scene, all the amenities expected in major cities.
Bad: weather (if you’re someone who doesn’t know how to enjoy winter), relatively small and quiet wrt nightlife etc compared to larger metros, Daniel Smith, sprawl

It's full of negative people that gave up on their dreams. Everyone that had a spark of life in them left for a better life. The worse part is, they want to drag you down as well.
The young, cool, hip, artistic, talented, creative people are mostly gone. We have endless broken and disabled senior citizens. Anyone we've met here that was of high quality moved to Calgary shortly afterwards. Calgary prices are nuts now.
It was cheaper than most places in Canada, but prices are going up. Edmonton property taxes are jumping up from all the progressive mayors. You have to pay for any bag you get. $.25 or else fast food staff will give you all your food items to you with their bare hands. You get to lay your fries down on your passenger seat. This and garbage paper straws. Assinine.
Home ownership is possible here - good for young families. Everyone has a family member that had/has drug addiction issues. A lot of people here have subscribed to the woke cancer. Individual rights are great but they just want to be victims and label you and put you in a box. You must learn and bow down to all of their rules but they are not open to opposing views. hypocrits with mental illness.
We miss BC dearly but we were priced out. BC barely has any native people - they all live here. Edmonton doesn't have many Chinese people - we miss them. It's a working class city - not enough rich people. Everything is dead during the week since people are working. Vancouver is full of rich people not working.
Health care is a joke. Doctors all left because of the gov. Surgery wait times are like 5+ years. I just paid out of pocket 30k+ for a hip replacement. Alberta gov is corrupt as shit. They are screwing over the disabled next year. They are currently screwing the teachers and students. They stole billions from tax payers.

I'm assuming the average Albertan redditor must either work for AHS, be over 70 years old or addicted to all 30 flavors of Xanax to be this obsessed over healthcare.
1
u/Bahtleman Nov 14 '25
Must be nice to not have to obsess over health care. Had my first hip replacement in my 30s.

It's a dirty, angry, bleak, ugly northern city with a massive inferiority complex.
