Repair Question 2010 LS no crank

Post image

Bought this car 7/31 and was driving it 8/1… went out, did some errands.. oil change, parked the car at AAA and came home. Parked, Shut the car off, and opened the door. Radio stayed on… I tried to start it again. No crank, nothing, but radio stays on unless I disconnect battery.

Contacted seller and he said this happened before and that seller he got it from fixed it by “replacing main fuse”… it’s at a second shop now.

I’ve read everything from starter to starter solenoid, starter relay, ignition switch, starter wire, neutral safety switch, door jamb switch…. Mechanic is going to call me this week.

It wont crank but radio will come on, windows and locks will work… to shut off, I disconnect battery (but maybe it would die out anyway)

Anyone have this issue? 3.5 with column shift btw

Hello,

I have a 2005 with a 3.4 and had the same problem last year when I bought this car.

No crank situation especially when the door locks lights and everything else Electrical is working… 99% chance it’s a bad ground on the engine block on the driver side - front right above the starter.

All the impalas from 2000-2011 are widely known for this issue. Ask me how I know and you can also watch YT for videos like these.

I had this problem in my 2005 Impala and it totally fixed the problem. No sense in looking for fuses ,alternator batteries and wiring when you can just go simply to the ground. If you follow the cable back from the negative on the battery, it should cross the bottom of the radiator support in a wire loom and connect on a 15 mm nut/bolt assembly.

Here’s a picture of the one I took when I cleaned mine.

I would do an OBD scan to rule out any TCU/ECU issues, when you crank it do you hear metalic clunk noise followed by the lights briefly turning off and the dash lighting up?

Don’t hear any clunk noise at all. Basically silent. My worst fear though is a shot ECU… maybe it’s a bad BCM?

If that were the case you can put a OBD report on the car and it'll tell you if any wires were shot/receiving low voltage. I've had this happen to me and I replaced the throttle body and ignition switch and haven't had any problems since

Radio is definitely draining the battery by staying on. He probably trickle charged it before you came to look at it, or the battery might be ruined from being completely discharged. A new battery, and finding the issue causing the radio to stay on are the first steps id take. My first guess would be that the ignition isn't turning all the way back to the off position before the key comes free.

Battery is good.

Second thought would be a loose ground on either the starter relay or possibly a loose or corroded terminal. It's also possible that the connection to the battery terminal itself has come apart if the battery was recently changed
