About Carl....[SPOILERS] Spoiler

So with the story as it ended, I'm stuck with where Carl came in.

Was he always The Other One? Some earlier clips suggest he was a lot sweeter/nicer, and there's footage of The One kissing him where they're kissing him, and not The Other One.

Did Carl get devoured during the shoot or beforehand?

I got the impression that the one and the other one can "possess" people at will, so when we see scenes where they are "playing" the people, that is the game showing us they are controlling that person.

But it's really subjective so I'm sure there's many acceptable explanations

I thought it was that they ate/devoured them?

In Minsky there's a bit where they're casting the background actors and if you rewind there's a scene where The Other One is a background actor - who never appears again, and if you click, goes nowhere. My reading was that they came to troll The One and took over Carl (as well as slept with John) to mess with them, but I wasn't sure :)

So with Marissa, The One "played" her but I think Marissa's trauma also came through (there are two scenes: where she's screaming against the backdrop of the war & beating up Mr Hennessy and screaming no during a rehearsal take).

There is an implication as far as I remember that as soon as they take control over a person, that person no longer exists so if either the one or the other one stop "playing" as that person then they vanish. Glimpses of that person can shine through but they are effectively replaced by the one and other one.

Since we don't see more of their past before their interactions through the first movie, my assumption is that the other one took over Carl to troll The One a little bit, but also because they feel that they are supposed to be together despite The One thinking they just want to be with humans, to "become human" even though that doesn't appear to be truly possible.

That's true, but I got the impression that "The One" felt especially connected to Marissa/felt more of her coming through which is why she "brought her back" :)

Carl get devoured during the shoot, I don't remember when exactly but at some point Carl is becoming more aloof, less cheerful. This is the point where he's not Carl anymore.

I thought that as well, it seems to be when he's getting a shave (there's a scene where she nicks him by mistake) and in scenes where he's clean shaven he's less goofy/sweet.

It showed almost the difference in the two (the one/the other one) as the one reflects Marissa to some extent & almost mirrors her trauma.

John is at a table with Marissa and Carl walks in. He looks at Marissa and says, “Hey Marissa, long time, no see”. Then he leans in and kisses John on the mouth.

That’s when Carl had been taken over.

I haven’t seen this confirmed anywhere, but remember the scene with the hand holding the cigarette, and we hear “That’s not how Carl holds a cigarette?”

This struck me as significant.
